From Wichita: This will be confusing so be prepared .... It is a LONG time until the General Election in November. I am not looking forward to 8 months of generalized "my candidate will beat your candidate" :nanner: and threads. Therefore I am creating a campaign thread for all the major candidates. (More can be added as needed or by request.) (Think of this thread like the convention floor on the last night!)Into these threads you can post your websites, articles, campaign slogans or anything else you want to post (within the TOS and SisterTrek rules) in support of your candidate. By definition, this thread will be partisan in favor of one candidate - it is not the place to argue or complain against that candidate. Since it only takes one poster to keep the thread near the top, the thread won't be pinned. If there is not even one poster who cares, then there's no reason to keep the thread near the top. ISSUE ORIENTED THREADS Issue oriented threads are still permitted and encouraged. What is an issue oriented thread? "I think that John Kerry will be better for the economy and here's why" is an issue oriented thread. "George Bush is stronger on defense and here's why" is an issue oriented thread. The positions of the candidates can be compared in those threads. If you have questions/concerns about this thread, please direct them here. |

Earlier today, I threw some temporary support over to one of the other candidates,
but I have decided its time to get down to business and throw that support back over to Kerry now.
And the highlight compliment for the this post: Kerry served his country honorably in Vietnam, and that's always a good thing. Here is Kerry's official campaign sight. http://www.johnkerry.com/ Here is the latest news on the campaign trail. http://blog.johnkerry.com/blog/archives/001298.html#more Here is Kerry's proposed first 100 days in office. http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/100days/

Good ones 24! Also, don't forget Move On.com! For those not in the know, it's a liberal support group. Since McCain-Feingold Act took place "soft money" (money to the parties) isn't used in Presidential campaigns. But that took both parties about thity seconds before they figured a way around it by using support groups. So support the various liberal groups. Edit by Minuet - I am editing your last line because we are trying to keep this thread to positive remarks about Kerry only. Not negative remarks about the other side. |

Actually, no enthusiam for these campaign threads. What's the point? No discussion allowed, just campaigning. There's plenty of that on the internet. I'm not trying to insult anyone that thinks they are a good idea, but it's why I haven't participated and don't plan to. |

A graduate of Yale University, John Kerry entered the Navy after graduation, becoming a Swift Boat officer, serving on a gunboat in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat V, and three awards of the Purple Heart for his service in combat. By the time Senator Kerry returned home from Vietnam, he felt compelled to question decisions he believed were being made to protect those in positions of authority in Washington at the expense of the soldiers carrying on the fighting in Vietnam. Kerry was a co-founder of the Vietnam Veterans of America and became a spokesperson for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War -- Morley Safer would describe him as "a veteran whose articulate call to reason rather than anarchy seemed to bridge the gap between Abbie Hoffman and Mr. Agnew's so-called 'Silent Majority.'" In April 1971, testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he asked the question of his fellow citizens, "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" Sen. Claiborne Pell, (D-R.I.) thanked Kerry, then 27, for testifying before the committee, expressing his hope that Kerry "might one day be a colleague of ours in this body." Fourteen years later, John Kerry would have the opportunity to fulfill those hopes - serving side by side with Sen. Pell as a Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But in the intervening years, Kerry graduated from Boston College Law School and found different ways to fight for those things in which he believed. Time and again, Kerry fought to hold the political system accountable and to do what he believed was right. As a top prosecutor in Middlesex County, Kerry took on organized crime and put the Number Two mob boss in New England behind bars. He modernized the District Attorney's office, creating an innovative rape crisis crime unit, and as a lawyer in private practice he worked long and hard to prove the innocence of a man wrongly given a life sentence for a murder he did not commit. In 1984, after winning election as Lieutenant Governor in 1982, Kerry ran and was elected to serve in the United States Senate, running and winning a successful PAC-free Senate race and defeating a Republican opponent buoyed by Ronald Reagan's reelection coattails. Like his predecessor, the irreplaceable Paul Tsongas, Kerry came to the Senate with a reputation for independence -- and reinforced it by making tough choices on difficult issues: breaking with many in his own Party to support Gramm-Rudman Deficit Reduction; taking on corporate welfare and government waste; pushing for campaign finance reform; holding Oliver North accountable and exposing the fraud and abuse at the heart of the BCCI scandal; working with John McCain in the search for the truth about Vietnam veterans declared POW/MIA; and insisting on accountability, investment, and excellence in public education. Sen. Kerry was re-elected in 1990, again in 1996, defeating the popular Republican Governor William Weld in the most closely watched Senate race in the country, and in 2002. Now serving his fourth term, Kerry has worked to reform public education, address children's issues, strengthen the economy and encourage the growth of the high tech New Economy, protect the environment, and advance America's foreign policy interests around the globe. John Kerry is married to Teresa Heinz Kerry. He has two daughters, Alexandra and Vanessa. Teresa has three sons, John, Andre, and Christopher. Senator Kerry lives in Boston. Link |

John Edwards was born in Seneca, South Carolina and raised in Robbins, North Carolina. There John learned the values of hard work and perseverance from his father, Wallace, who worked in the textile mills for 36 years, and from his mother, Bobbie, who ran a shop and worked at the post office. Working alongside his father at the mill, John developed his strong belief that all Americans deserve an equal opportunity to succeed and be heard.A proud product of public schools, John became the first person in his family to attend college. He worked his way through North Carolina State University where he graduated with high honors in 1974, and then earned a law degree with honors in 1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For the next 20 years, John dedicated his career to representing families and children hurt by the indifference and negligence of others. Standing up against the powerful insurance industry and their armies of lawyers, John helped these families through the darkest moments of their lives to overcome tremendous challenges. His passionate advocacy for people like the ones who worked in the mill with his father earned him respect and recognition across the country. In 1998, John took this commitment into politics to give a voice in the United States Senate to the people he had represented throughout his career. He ran for the Senate and won, defeating an incumbent Senator. In Congress, John is championing the issues that matter to American families. He is working to provide Americans with quality health care and he co-authored the Patients' Bill of Rights and helped pass it in the Senate. He fought for middle-class tax cuts to help families save and get ahead. And he worked to improve our schools, fund No Child Left Behind, improve teacher pay, and expand after-school programs. Senator Edwards is working every day to protect our civil liberties and our rights: standing up to radical judicial appointees like Judge Pickering. He is standing up to the big polluters to preserve our environment and keep our air and our water clean. And he has called for fiscal discipline to cut the deficit in half to save Social Security and Medicare, and offered real reforms to change the way campaigns are financed. As a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Edwards has worked tirelessly for a strong national defense and to strengthen the security of our homeland. In the wake of September 11th, he served as a member of the joint House and Senate panel investigating the terrorist attacks. John Edwards has been a leader in fighting bioterrorism, and he's taken on powerful special interests to safeguard our nuclear power plants and chemical plants. He was one of the first to call for fundamental reforms in the way our intelligence agencies are organized to catch terrorists here at home and around the world. And he was one of the first to travel to Afghanistan to visit our troops after they defeated the Taliban. As the Senator from North Carolina, John Edwards represents the world's largest army installation complex as well as the headquarters of the Marine Antiterrorism Task Force. He has been active in strengthening our military and improving the lives of our men and women in uniform and their families. He has proposed to extend tax exemptions for military personnel in combat zones and provide National Guard families with financial help paying for child care in their home town. Senator Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, whom he met when both were law students at Chapel Hill, were married in 1977. They have had four children, including: their eldest daughter, Catharine, a recent graduate of Princeton University; six-year-old Emma Claire, and a four-year-old son, Jack. Their first child, Wade, died in 1996. Senator Edwards and Elizabeth opened the Wade Edwards Learning Lab in Raleigh, North Carolina. The learning lab offers students after-school access to computers and tutoring in technology. The Edwards also established an education foundation in memory of their son that offers college scholarships to students. Link |

Text of Senator John Edwards’ Radio Address to the Nation July 10, 2004 For Immediate Release Good morning, this is John Edwards. On Tuesday morning, I received a phone call from John Kerry. He asked me to be his running mate on the Democratic ticket. Nothing makes me prouder than to stand with John Kerry. After I said yes, I asked my 6 year-old Emma Claire and my 4 year-old Jack to tell their mom. My daughter got on the phone and said, “Mommy Senator Kerry picked daddy.” And then Jack got on the phone and said something that he thought was more important, “Mommy, I can swim with my head above water.” As a father, I know that John Kerry will make this country stronger and more secure for my children and for your children. And he will build an America that’s stronger at home and respected in the world. I am speaking to you today for one simple reason: I love my country. I grew up in a small town in North Carolina, and America has given me opportunities that I never thought I’d have. I believe that every American deserves the same chance that I had no matter where they live, who their family is or what the color of their skin. I know John Kerry well. I’ve spent six years working with him in the Senate, and we spent a lot of time on the campaign trail together. And I’ll tell you one thing: he has what it takes inside to be president of the United States – backbone, strength, courage, heart. He has spent his life fighting for the good of others and for the good of America. John Kerry understands that most middle-class families are struggling every day just to make ends meet. You can’t save any money because it takes every dime you make to just to pay your bills. And if something goes wrong, a serious illness, or a layoff, you go right off the cliff. And to make things even worse, millions of Americans have lost their life’s savings and pensions because of corporate crooks like Ken Lay. It took three long years to see Ken Lay handcuffed and indicted for what he did. And in November, middle-class families will be able to rest assured that John Kerry will look out for their interests, restore corporate responsibility, and put our economy back in line with our values. John Kerry will fight for jobs and trade agreements that work for American workers. He’ll cut taxes for middle-class working families. And John Kerry will always stand by our men and women who wear the uniform. For him, it’s personal. He will keep us safe and build a strong military, and lead strong alliances, so that young Americans are never put in harm’s way because we needlessly decided to go it alone. John Kerry volunteered for Vietnam – not once, but three times – and he volunteered for the most dangerous duty and risked his life for his country. And no one is more prepared to win the war on terror than John. As president, he will lead this world, not bully it. I believe you can judge a man’s values based on what he’s done with his life – not based on how he uses the word values in a political slogan or a political speech. If you want to know about John Kerry’s values, ask the men who served with him in Vietnam. He put his life on the line for them every day – seven days a week, 24 hours a day. They trusted him. They believed in him. They trust in him and believe in him today. These are the kind of values we need in a president – somebody who has strength, courage and determination and will never leave any American behind. John Kerry returned from Vietnam and he never stopped serving this country. He served as a prosecutor protecting families from crime. He’s been a leader in the United States Senate. The truth is: John Kerry has spent his life fighting for the values that you and I believe in: hard work, faith, family, responsibility, opportunity for everyone. And you can take one thing to the bank: John Kerry will always tell the American people the truth. Between now and November, the American people are going to reject the tired, old, hateful negative politics of the past and they’re going to embrace the politics of hope, the politics of what’s possible, because this is America, where everything is possible. And that’s what John Kerry is for this country. He’s hope. Hope for you. Hope for me. Hope for our children. Hope for the future of America. With John Kerry as our president, America’s tomorrow will once again be better than today. Thank you for listening. Link |
