I do not believe it was explained why Voyager did not have a ship's counselor. Smaller ship, Neelix fit in in that regard later, blah blah blah. Perhaps there was one and he/she was killed in the pilot like the Doctor was? I can't remember, does anyone know? Also, will this be likely a permanent post on Starfleet vessels?

Either the Counceller was killed in the pilot or hadn't signed on yet. The first mission was only to retrieve Chakotay's Maquis.

I am reasonably certain that the ship's counselor was listed among the casualties in the pilot episode...

I'll double check but i think I recall a mention in Caretaker that the counsellor didnt arrive in time for the mission to hunt down the Marquis, its either that or what swidden said. But I only recall the ships doctor, first officer and chief engineer were killed, I dont remember any mention of a counsellor killed.

I did not catch any official explanation for no counselor, but I was not trying to so I may have missed it. I will view it again. The original doctor is very interesting. I clearly recognize the actor from TNG as an alien.

He was in the same episode that James Cromwell was in, TNG's 'The Hunted' where he played a trained soldier/assasin, and had the crew chasing him most of the episode, Cromwell played the leader of the planet that didnt want these soldiers.

Did they have a councelor on DS-9? Maybe not all ships get a councelor. It seemed like a luxery item and the Galaxy class ships are large enough to have all this extra stuff.

Voyager's counseller was Lieutenant Stadi from the short scene in Caretaker with Paris, isn't it?

She was killed and noone was qualified to replace her.

The whole concept of a counselor was wussy to begin with. Then again, 1987 was the dawn of New Age Psychology, where everyone's a victim and we have to understand our feeeeeeewings. Geez, Louise!

I always dislike the role as Ship's Councelor. All they do is talk pshycobabble, and they aren't really worth all that much. It's probably why I found troi so annoying.

I think Janeway made a great ships councelor. She was always calming her crew down, and always tried to help them in times of need, such as with what she did with Kes.
