I posted this on the Star Trek website, and was wondering what you guys thought of it. If Reed is a lieutenant, and Hayes a Major, then Hayes should outrank Reed. In todays military in America, A Marine Major outranks a Navy Leiutenant. They should have Hayes in charge of security, and Reed in charge of the tactical situation. What do you guys think. This could have been brought up, I don't know.

Time to put something here
I would have to say the reason that Reed out ranks Hays is because that’s who Archer wants it. I would assume, he wants his ship in the hands of the people he picked to run it. While he sees the need to have the macos on board, he doesn’t necessarily like it let alone want to put them in charger of anything. They are there to do a job and that’s it.

It is simply because Berman and Braga have their heads up their a$$es when it comes to such things. They don't consider it an issue so they simply ignore it. When questioned, they'll spout some blather about Starfleet not being a military organization (never mind the ranks or the chain of command, or even the use of JAG-OFFicers!).

Then again, I've been harping for years over the TNG Enterprise being called "Flagship of the Federation" when they have no Admiral aboard. I think Braga gets his ideas about rank from old episodes of The Love Boat!

In the episode that had Reed and Hayes brawling, they spelled it out just so. Not when it came to Reed vs. Hayes, but in reference to Tucker's fraternizing with Cpl. Whats-her-name... We are dealing with apparently two unrelated branches of service. Something, to me at least, which does not make a lot of sense... Then again, it's Enterprise...
