It doesn't matter if you think he was joking, or if the audience laughed at it. The fact that he actually SAID it is frightening. If Bush said it, every leftist columnist would be up in arms about restricting freedom of speech. But, being that we live in a double standard society (where the left can say anything they want and get a pass from the media, but the right has everything they say parsed down to the syllable), I'm not giving him a pass. This was irresponsible at best, indicative at worst. I see his true (red) colors with this comment. |

Gee, I'd have thought this was a post made by a liberal poking fun at President Bush's speaking ability...![]() In all seriousness, if there is any truth to the idea that Dean would want to break up the large media conglomerates I think he will run into a buzzsaw. The fact that there are at least 11 of them would seem to suggest that there is a healthy amount of competition and perhaps room for more... |

You're blowing it out of proportion. How many politicians have been on talk shows? Would you take his comment less seriously if it were said on Jay Leno or Conan? The host put him on the spot, probably in humor, by asking him whether he would break up Fox in front of an audience full of Fox fans. Now, from the looks of the transcript, it looks like Dean gave a witty reply. If Dean said he would break up all networks with opposing viewpoints at a DNC convention to win over voters, THEN I would be worried. There is a double standard between liberals and conservatives but I doubt that there is one here. A harmless joke is hardly a sign of evil totalitarian aspirations on the part of Dean. |

Bill - what's wrong with having a "socialist" - note I used a small "s" in the title socialist - president next time ? What are you so scared of ? What's wrong with breaking down the huge and powerful media conglomerates (who are way too powerful and influential for my and most people's likings - especially us foreigners) and forcing more diversity of media opinion and editorial content ? Surely that has to be beneficial to a democratic society and system, is much more healthy than current situation where obscenely wealthy and powerful media mogals (or mungrels who all almost without esception to a man were born into wealth and privalege) can (and do) influence government policy and public opinion - often to the detriment of us mere mortals.

Forced destruction/separation of any large corporation should be done very carefully. There is generally a reason something got that large - it may be a bad reason, but also could be a good one. Messing with a good reason could ultimately create more problems than it would solve. From where I sit, the companies who engineered the breakup of AT & T are every bit the conglomerate that AT & T was at its heyday, but are far less responsive, service oriented or inexpensive. In two different places that I have lived in the past 10 years, I have had to fight to get my local phone bill rates reduced because of deals those companies have made with their own subsidiaries. It is also interesting, and depressing, to track who actually owns those large conglomerates. A classmate of mine who owned the local Fox and UPN stations once tracked the parent company back for us. If media conglomerates is an issue for people, then they should know that it is already a world-wide issue. Not only do the same people own the airwaves, but they own the magazines, newspapers and book publishers too. Finally, there's zero chance that Howard Dean is going to break up all the conglomerates. If he were serious about it, then his name would disappear from the air waves almost immediately. No company is going to help elect someone who intends to put them out of business. No candidate is going to risk all his campaign ads being run at 2 a.m. on weeknights. Either Dean has not intention of taking on the issue or he really does intend to target certain groups. If the second is true, then every person should be concerned no matter what their ideology is. |

Don't a guarateed by state and federal (national) law RIGHT OF REPLY for political campaigning opponents in the USA ? The media - all of them - are obligated by the law to provide equal quality exposure to the major and minor parties representative to that provided by them to the government during election campaigns - it not free - but it is GUARANTEE as RIGHT in Australia. |

Socialism is evil and must be destroyed! Like communism, it goes against human nature. Socialism and communism are dinosaurs, and like unions, are long past their time. |

Admiral, Do you distinguish between labor and academic unions? I ask, because I'm part of a faculty union that has saved members' tails (from the abuses of administration) on a number of occasions. |

Evil? - That’s a pretty strong word. People can do Evil thing under socialism, communism and capitalism for that matter. I don’t really think you could call any of them Evil, they are just ideas. Its what people do with them that make certain cases evil or not. Yes socialism and communism go agents human nature - which lead humans to miss use them, but that hardly counts as they them selves being Evil. I thought the whole point of star trek was to show that if Human nature where to change and humans grow up, then the good aspects of socialism, communism, and capitalism could be intermingled and a new better ideology could be formed. |

Dante: More people have died under Socialist and Communist regimes than any other. For example, it is estimated that 12 million Ukranians died under Stalin's engineered famine during 1933. (The Ukraine was the Soviet Union's breadbasket.) Mao's "Great Leap Forward" is estimated to have killed THIRTY MILLION through starvation in 1959. Lest we forget, Hitlers National Socialists murdered six million Jews and five million other "undesirables." These forms of government must not only be eradicated, but stamped out, crushed, and left on the dungheap of failed ideas (and ideals)! There simply are no good aspects to any system that goes against human nature. |

I am not disputing those facts what so ever and that those circumstances where evil (I am half Ukraine btw). I am saying that I don’t understand how one can attribute a word like Evil to a form of thought when its not that thought that is evil, but what people do with it. Guns kill people right? are guns evil or the people who kill people? |

Perhaps ABG is stating that the philosphy or ideal of socialism is an evil philosphy. Like the philosphy of human sacrifice. |

Dandandat, I would opt for the latter--that it's the people whom are responsible. I've been mulling over purchasing a .22 rifle for our son for Christmas for several weeks now. If he hadn't shown a high degree of responsibility with his BB gun over the past year, I would not even be considering the purchase. |

How old is your son? My father bought me a .22 when I was a teenager. Like all the guns we had, it was looked up in a cabinet (as well as the bullets in another draw) and the only time I got to touch it was when we went hunting or when we went to a rang. And not because I didn’t know where the key was (cause I did) but because I was told not to. A gun is a tool like any other - a child can hurt him self good with a hammer if you don’t watch him with it, same thing goes for a gun. Sure a gun is more deadly, but all that means is that you have to watch the child more diligently. |

He's 11. We wouldn't let him use any gun unsupervised. BTW, what is a rang? |
