Yes, it's true he was there to have dinner with some of our troops. With all the crazy things going on over there, I wouldn't have imagined him going there. In my my opinion, it takes a strong man to go into harm's way. I'm no Bush supporter, but you have to give him two thumbs up for this.

AGREED HERE !!

I think my views on Iraq etc are reasonably well known, however, putting all that aside for a moment, the visit to Baghdad by President Bush bought a warm smile and a chuckle to my face.

It was a brave and inspired thing for him to do and would have been some small comfort for the troops who are so far away from families on this thanks giving weekend.

Well done Mr Bush !

Its his duty as the President. Is there something wrong with our President having Thankgiving among his troops? If I was solider and in the company of the President I'd be happy to have a meal with my command and Cheif.

NZTrekkie, are you drunck? you have actually said something nice about our President.

Gabe,
You are correct! It is his part of job! That's the stuff the president needs to do to. I'm sure this visit did a lot for the morale of the troops over there.
Like I said earlier, I'm no Bush fan. I must admit this has made me re-think my opinion of the president. :ermm:

no I'm not drunk, just giving credit where it is due.

Even if this is just the mother of all photo ops (and I'm not saying it is) the personal nature of the gesture and the inherent sincerity of his desire to inspire the troops will take him far further with people everywhere, than the insincere, hollywood style, "top gun" crap that has gone down previously.

He doesn't even need to say a word - just the picture of him serving the turkey says everything. No need for jingoistic, cliched speeches.

I am really starting to think that once this man shakes off all the hangers on and extremist advisors around him, mainly situated at the Pentagon, and is just "himself", he will achieve far more for everybody.

Hopefully he is starting to realise the same thing.

my tip : Look for even less input from donald in future.

Speak softly, and carry a 57 megaton stick!
I was origionally not a huge fan of Bush's politics. However, as time went on, I found that many of his policies were the result of the far righters using him as a speaking piece. I think that he is actually a pretty decent moderate who is just hanging out with the wrong group. He could loosen those steel tariffs though.

Unfortunatelly for Bush, if this view becomes widespread, then Bush will get plastered as nothing more then a figurehead while the GOP was running the government.

For you righties that don't think that the lefties are starting to think this, try reading THIS . I think that the slant of the views in this editorial will help my point.

I think Bush has been used as a mouth piece by the extremists in a way that Ronald Reagan was always thought to have been, but, IMHO, never was that much.

Don't know if I would go as far as calling Mr Bush a moderate though.

I didn't mean that he was used ONLY as a mouthpiece. It's just that some of his actions and decisions may have been based more on the desires of his party then his own personal views. That is a common occurance in politics.

When I originally heard this story, I had thought he was still on the "road" and had taken a quick, reasonable detour. It wasn't until later, I heard that he took a day and a half from family at holiday time to spend 2 hours with the troops.

If it helps his reelection campaign, I say good. It was simply a nice thing to do.

Here's what I see as the big difference between the Bush trip to Baghdad and the Hillary! trip to Afghanistan and Baghdad.

Hillary! did it for the photo-op, and for the chance to make her own "feeeeeelings" known about Bush. She couldn't keep her mouth shut and support the troops.

Bush did it for the troops. Note that he appeared without fanfare, served dinner to them, chatted with a few hundred, and then left. He had HIS dinner on the plane on the way home. This was done for troop morale and it was the right thing to do.

Well, this is an important thing about President Bush's character. Some politicians clearly do these things for the camera, but this man is seen even by those who do not support his presidency a great deal as being sincere in an undertaking like this.

Admiral Bill, You are totally right about Hillary! She should've kept her mouth shut and had some turkey with the troops! That wasn't the place to voice her opinion about the president. I admired the president for the trip. I could have cared less about her trip. :realmad:
