Perhaps we need a name calling forum?

Perhaps we need a name calling forum. This is supposed to be for discussing world events and politics.

Saying "Bush is an idiot", "Blair wears womens underware" and that sort of thing isn't really discussion is it? It is just name calling.

How about if we try to use persuasive arguements in this forum and we set up a separate forum for those who want to just hurl insults at political leaders or celebrities? That way free speech (to call names) is protected and we perserve intellectual discussion as well.

I don't think that is necessary, but that is my opinion.

You'd have to ask, "Where do I draw the line?"

Is "Bush is a moron" name calling? If so (or if not), then is "Blair is a liberal" also name calling?

Agreed. Otherwise, it would quickly become just like any other Board. :(

I definitely don’t think that is necessary. There are already enough restrictions on what we can and cannot say here (as a result of the TOS and the societal norms for behavior that have developed in this message board community).

AB asks an excellent question, “Where do I draw the line?” Or should I say where would the moderator draw the line? It is your opinion that saying “Bush is a moron” is name-calling. To someone else, it could be a well documented fact. If that person wants to call Bush a moron, then that is their prerogative. You can intellectually disagree with that position, but it is still their right. A person should not be segregated for posting an “undesirable” comment (who determines what is undesirable?) for doing so.

When someone posts disagreeable material in the Politics Forum, (which happens all of the time), we hash it out in debate...we don't segregate.

Segregation is a dangerous slippery slope IMHO.

I just realized what I quoted and then what I wrote--very unclear. I was agreeing that the name-calling is unnecessary. My 'agreed' was not a vote for a name-calling thread! Sorry about that. :)

Good idea - as far as I can see it would only have one, maybe two members.

I wasn't implying restrictions on speech, I just want to separate the intellectual discussion from the name calling discussion.

Allow me to clarify with an example.

Non-intellectual discussion:
Quote:

Bush is a big poopy head and he smokes crack

Intellectual discussion:
Quote:

Bush is a big poopy head because:

  • A

  • B

  • C

So, in summation: Bush is a big poopy head and Springfield Dailey Shopper reported that he was indicted and found guilty of smoking crack.

This way all of our communities needs are met. :)

38957,

I really think you need a choice 'D' for it to be an intellectual discussion. ;)

I still vote a BIG no. This is your opinion, and your opinion alone about what constitutes intellectual debate. Leave it up to the individual poster to decide what they feel contributes to the forum. Leave it up to the individual poster to decide what they do and do not want to reply to.

The community's needs? Are you sure? So far, you are the only one on this thread who thinks this separate forum is a good idea. I think the only person’s needs who will be served is yours (which coincidently is the same person who moderates this forum).

First of all, this whole post was mostly 'tongue-in-cheek'. My way of railing against mindless ad-hominen attacks as a debating tactic.

Secondly, I am not the only moderator in this forum. There is ds9074 who is completely opposite in politics and always there is the super-moderator Wichita.

Do you like having an intellectual debate about foriegn policy or such continually interupted by "Bush is a moron" and other such salient points. Sounds like the reason we abandon tenforward to me.

I often use levity or absurdity to make points. Don't take me too literally all the time.

Once again you try to shush me aside. Ok, we will end this conversation, but know this…

I answered your straight-forward question (a question that displayed no joking or levity that was obvious to me), with a straight-forward answer. This is after a couple of other people answered your straight-forward question with straight-forward answers.

A little bit of advice and you can take it or leave it. Perhaps you should start using more of the little winking, smiling, and multiple expression emoticons that this board so generously provides. That way, we will know that you were joking when you post what appears at first glance to be a serious straight-forward question. Then we can all avoid wasting our time debating a joke.

Example:

:P ;) :D  :) :wow:  :wave2:  B)

24thcenstfan,

I don't agree. Please edit. Thanks. ;) :wow:

I must admit, I do like the emoticons on this Board.... :)

Hey, how come my quote didn't take with the emoticons? Oh well....
