Question: Why would a normally rational and civilized person suddenly spout name-calling when "discussing" any particular topic that has special meaning to them?

Um, I don't think this is the appropriate place for this discussion...

I wasn't exactly sure which topic to put this in. Maybe Wichita can move this to where she thinks it belongs.

This topic is a purely curiousity question.

Don't make me use my bare hands on you.
When a person is emotionally involved with a topic like patriotism, political idealogy or such, it becomes difficult to debate with out taking it personally. A person might under these circumstances feel that a disagreement is akin to an insult. This might explain this.

Also, the problem can be compounded when one person intentionally 'baits' another into an arguement by 'pushing buttons' that he knows will evoke an emotional response. This is just as despicable as hurling insults, in my opinion.

Example:

[Foreigner] (in hopes to evoke response from known American veteran and patriot): America sucks, the world would be better had it never existed. You should do what we do and not do this or that. Your president is a moron and you should be involve in this dispute in another country.

[veteran & patriot] Why you 'bleepity-bleep', why don't you get a clue and stop criticising what you don't know and go jump off a cliff, etc.

So, I put the question back to you:

Why would some one intentionally try to evoke an angry response from another by making radical assertions and statements as though they were fact and not opinion and criticizing that which the other hold dear without intent of intellectual discussion?

Jjtrek,

I don't really know. Insecurity? I do know that I've seen this occur at just about every Board I've ever visited over the past six or so years. :(

Oh Dear, I wanted to find out how to make lemonade!

well the way I like to do it is, take some real lemons, a blender, some ice and seltzer or sparking water (the good kind like Pellegrino).

1) Put the ice and the water into the blender,

2) Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice into the blender

3) Blend on High until the ice is nicely blended.

4) Place one half of the cut leman into the blender and blend on low.

5) drink the lemonade.

6) smile with satisfaction

As for "normally rational and civilized person suddenly spout name-calling when "discussing" any particular topic that has special meaning to them" - first it because they are talking abut something special to them, normally rational people tend to change when talking about something they feel is personal to them. Second their is always that last screw the brakes the camels back
.

Julia

Sometimes it's the only way to respond to someone who is essentially a troller.

It may not be the right way to respond, but as someone who myself has gone overboard when baited I fully understand the urge to respond in that manner.

I think that we are all basically "animals," and when our beliefs, feelings, preferences get challenged we sometimes become very territorial and act in strange ways to protect those beliefs. Since we are human "animals," we for the most part have a civilized approach to that protection, but sometimes that basic “rarghhh” comes out and we can get nasty.

Lemonade…yummy. I love pink lemonade!!!! :D

24thcenstfan,

I like your reasoning. I also like what Minuet said above your post. Quite honestly, that position (Minuet's) had never occurred to me before. (Yeah, I know--Kirk to Fesarius: 'Now you have something new to think about.') :)

oh dear......this post seems to apply to me.

1) I have more constructive things to do than to go around an obsure message board "trolling" people who have rather strongly held views. Do you honestly think that's the thrill of my day ?

I have strongly held views myself and I express them. If someone else can't control themselves when others clearly can in the same circumstances, I don't see that as my problem.

I certainly don't see why i should stop giving my views just because ONE person sees expressing an opinion as trolling. I thought that's what fascism is - you can have an opinion as long as it is the same as mine or is expressed in a way that I don't mind ?

2) others, like 38957, who also hails from Texas and seems to have similar world views to bill gets on just fine with me and has said previoulsy that he even enjoys my posts.

So again, why should the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many ?

even if I was trolling, so what ? Am I holding a gun to anyone's head to make them respond ?

I came here from TF to get away from the idiots and spammers there (and was asked quite nicely actually to come over by several people). I don't see why I should do anything differently - I think some people should just grow up.

I see bill probably won't get a warning for suggesting I walk in front of fast moving car, wheres I get one for using "granny" and "uppity" - I realise this site is heavily slanted, I don't mind that - I'm a big boy. I choose to come here. Just wanted to make sure everone else realises that.

Yes

I did get rid of the walk in front of a car remark in ABG's post.

This is all kind of like the "you have free speech, but it doesn't mean that you should yell 'fire' in a crowded theater unless it's true" theory.

38957, are you referring to AB telling someone that they should go commit suicide or NZ trolling? Or both?
