The Adminstrator wRench
Last night Ohio was home to a rolling line of thunderstorms that severely limited my Internet time. Just about the time I thought they were through, I would jump online and then hear a new storm start and have to get off again. As a result, I didn't have a chance to read most of these posts till this morning (and still haven't read many of them). From what I have read, it's clear things got pretty stormy online last night as well.

When this board started, I tried to keep it as moderation free as possible. Whatever it's other faults, StarTrek.com allowed us to be rather blunt in stating our opinions. I do have to maintain the Terms of Service listed below however - failure to do so can result in the lock down and eventual deletion of the board. I have seen it done at least twice in the last month so please don't tell me its not possible.

My other reasons for not implementing the board warning system are as follows:

1) I find it personally insulting. We are adults (or close enough) - we shouldn't be controlled by what a computer program says.

2) It takes a boatload of time that frankly neither I or my mods have to devote to it. Again we are all adults. We should be able to police ourselves.

So where does that leave us?

Either we ALL dial it back (rein it in, cool it, behave, etc.) or we agree that conversations here can get a little heated and not take things so personally or the moderators will have to start just locking down threads that appear to them to be getting out of control.

Following are two definitions (courtesy of the Trekbbs warning system):

1. Trolling: Trolling is an internet term that means you're not posting to actually start or participate in a good discussion, but simply to anger another member or group of members.

Note: This is not defined as what you might be angered by, but what any member or group may be angered by. The right can do it to the left and vice versa. The atheist can do it to the religous and vice versa. The USA citizens can do it to the non-USA citizens and vice versa. And so on and so on and so on ....

2. Flaming: Obviously, you cannot insult other people. You may disagree with someone's opinion, but you may not attack the person themselves for posting that opinion. Don't respond to a flame with a flame. You cannot flame people and then claim to have been just defending yourself.

Note: Again this is not what you might be insulted by, but what someone else finds insulting.

From what I have read, both trolling and flaming went on last night. The question is how we should react to it.

So do we keep it open as is and relatively free of restriction or do we all start acting like a group of     ?

Forgive my bluntness - but I have limited time right now to respond.

Rose,

I'm for leaving it open. Also, I trust the judgement of the individual thread moderators to know when to tell someone to cool it. And if I disagree with their judgement or want clarification, I can Email them. :)

Wew, fun, fun, fun.

I closed a couple that were just shouting matches and edited a thing here or there.

Perhaps, people should realize when others are trying to bait them and not respond with insults, but with silence. It is the insults and anger that the 'baiter' wants from the 'bait-ee'

In the immortal words of Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along?"

I am definitely for leaving the board open.   And to second what Fesarius said…if I disagree with a Moderator’s judgment call or need clarification, I will take it up with them. And if I disagree with the actions/behavior of a Moderator I will take it up with Wichita.

And if anyone disagrees with my actions…just PM me and we can hash it out there.

P.S. Peace, love and all that yada yada. :wave2:

I'm for leaving this board open too. For the most part, this board and its members have shown to be quite intelligent people. Freedom to express one's feelings on a subject (civilly, of course) needs to be protected and nourished.

I think it is best to leave the board open - admin/moderators do an even-handed job of keeping the peace when (rarely) necessary - this community is made up of generally kind and considerate people - - even at "our" worst, this board is still one of the finest, most civil boards I've visited.

:wave2: Hi there guys, um, could you give a guy who frequents several boards a day a hand and provide some links to the posts in question so I don't have to go searching? Thanks.

I might as well add my voice to the chorus: Keep the Board as open as possible.

I don't want total lawlessness, but I do like the idea of sitting at my keyboard here and going back and forth with folks that hold different views than I do (Kinda feel like a senator of one party referring to an opposing senator as his/her friend despite ideological differences, you know: "My good firend, the honorable Senator from _______ , is clearly misinformed.... ").

I think we have to figure that since most of us are adults, and those here that aren't yet have done a fine job displaying their obvious maturity, we should all be big enought to shake it off after a dust up. These things will probably continue to happen on occasion and it should be stressed that when one sees something that boils their blood some they should probably find another thread to post in or go do something else. Like Wichita wrote: Rein it in.

This can be said of those who might compose provocative posts as well. Before you click the "Add Reply" button, take a moment to review what you've written. If you're not sure that something you've might cross the line, err on the side of caution and reword it so it is less inflammatory.

I, for one, do not want us to turn into a mutual admiration society with one lengthy post followed by a chorus of "Hear, hear's" and "I concur's." I've butted heads philosophically with several people here, even some with whom my particular ideologies mesh. The most heated it ever got for me and another poster (someone who frequently posts here now) was back over on TF on the topic of Dusty Baker's remarks earlier this summer.
