What's the matter, boy? Can't admit I'm right? Isn't it a little early for bed? Near as I can figure it is only 2:30PM your time. I guess you do need that nap after overstressing both of those brain cells. |

Well to bring this back on topic.... Campaigns are quite expensive now, and ideally it would be great if all parties could agree on limit's...but they never will becasue one person will always be looking for an atvantage. So the best thing to do if make sure that the funds spent and donated are clearly id'ed and made public so that hidden influnce can not be gained. |

They tried with campaign finance reform, but politicians found loopholes in that. There was talk in 2000 of every campaign contribution to every presidential and congressional candidate being listed on the Internet within 24 hours of that contribution, but the Gore campaign shot it down. It'd be nice if someone picked up that mantle again. |

It would. But both parties are much too interested in winning than worrying about the integrity of the democractic system.

The system is very open to corruption - big donors will find ways of breaking down their contributions in smaller (more acceptable donations via dummy or ghost donors) ,and if not all the money is used on promoting the candidate what's to stop the candidate from pocketing the unspent donations. Once the election is over they (the big donors) will expect value for money. Spending obsene amounts of money on saturation advertising and spin and hipe and give aways and parties for well connected or desireable potential donors will not result in the best man getting the job - only the most popular. Doesn't Congress or the Supreme Court have the obligation to set limits that want-to-bes must accept ? |
