I hear that Bush can count on a couple of hundred million dollars ($US !!!!!) to pay for his campaign for re-election. The leading opponents are talking privately raising similar sums (and not seeking public funding - which would limit the money they can spend). This all sounds very wasteful to me, surely if there are good policies to be communicated then it is unnecessary to enter into a spending dual and the person with the biggest war chest and able to spend the most money on spin becoming the next president irrespective of whether they capable of doing the job. How does this improve the democratic system ? |

I agree that there is no need to spend such obscene amounts of money in a campaign. |

That amount of money, in this multi-media age, is not out of line. Compared to the GDP, or even the amount of money people spend on cosmetics every year, this is still piddling. Think of this: The City of Houston mayoral campaign is currently in a run-off. For the first election round (you need 50% plus one vote to be mayor), three major candidates and a slew of last tier candidates spent nearly SIX MILLION dollars! The job pays about $150K, but it comes with perqs and the ability to steer lucrative contracts to certain people. Our elections are "officially" non-partisan, which I find ridiculous, but the major parties line up behind their guys. Democrat businessman Bill White spent TWO MILLION dollars of his own money in addition to donations from supporters and the DNC. Other candidates, Republican Orlando Sanchez and Democrat Sylvester Turner, relied solely on contributions (except for "special interest" mailings). P.S. The Bush campaign goal is 170 million dollars. The campaign just passed the one hundred million dollar mark this month and is expected to take in another hundred million. Since the Democrats have to spend money on presidential primaries (Clinton was unopposed in 1996, which enabled him to save during this time), it will be more difficult to manage money. As in 1996, the candidate with the lion's share of money shall win. |

Remember the comment of Joe Kennedy Snr......."you could get a monkey elected President if you had enough money" I agree with your sentiments....it's sad that "money" outweighs "message" in much of politics today. |

I hate thinking that the candidate with the most money will win, never minding whether they can actually do the job or not. It's a very stupid way to run an election. The American public deserves better than that. Julia |

The American public DO deserve better than a president who has taken self promotion and poorly judged novelty photo ops and comments to new (low) heights. eg : the infamous "mission complete" banner; the "bring it on" jibe to the bad guys, the top gun stunt, the Mt Rushmore photo op, etc........... all of which were either permature, naive, cynical, in poor taste or all four. The eyes of the world are watching Nov 04. |

Keep spouting those lies, NZ. Once again I hear your OPINION on things you know NOTHING about. Personally, I liked seeing him in the flight suit. I don't care if you didn't. Most AMERICANS did too. Guess what, he didn't put up the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner, the navy did. As for his "bring 'em on" (at least get it right) comment, I WHOLLY SUPPORT IT. We will grind the terrorist scum to dust, just like Osama. Our military feels the same way. I don't care if you THIRD WORLD residents don't like it. Your piddling nation of under four million people wouldn't even exist if not for us. You'd be a Japanese "protectorate" or a "southern economic development zone" and those not cutting down trees, raising sheep, or mining iron, gold or coal would be dead. Take your whining where someone cares, like the Communist Party or those loonies the Watermelons... err Greens (you know, green on the outside, RED on the inside). |

To bad for you the world wont be voting in 04, it will be only Americans (and we all know what you think about Americans). I know you wish to be part of this country and so live vicariously thought your insults, but unfortunately this is just an illusion of your mind. You can watch Nov 04 all you want it wont change anything. What will be will be, and you wont have a say in it ether way. How sad it must be, to be waiting for something so intently that you cant even take part in. I feel sorry for you. |

I haven't missed an election, even while at sea, since I've been able to vote. I found out something interesting about Texas. It turns out that a lot of people were not registering to vote because the court systems drew their jury pools from the voter lists. I got called to jury duty three times between 1982 and 1998, but I never had to go because I was serving in a branch of the military away from my registered address. I had to fill out a form each time and mail it in. Of course when we moved back here in '99 I was local again, and sure enough, I was called in July. I showed up, cane and all, and read a book for four hours before being dismissed. The State of Texas changed the laws and now anyone with a driver's license is eligible to serve on juries. You may get around not registering to vote, but a driver's license is the closest thing to an ID card any of us have. |

Are you stupid, or just trying to bait me? Show me ANY proof that Osama is still alive. No, I don't count TWO YEAR OLD video tapes that show him frolicking around hills and dales THAT WE BOMBED (funny that there is no sign of the bomb damage). Speaking of competent, your utter lack of competence when it comes to reseach is galling. |
