I recently just heard through the grapevine (my aunt's cousin's brother's nephew's sister-in-law's neighbor) that he is moving to New Zealand, will be establishing residence and plans to run for local office. :D

Why do I get this strange feeling that you are eagerly marking off the days on your calendar? ;) Have you been stockpiling lots of facts, figures and all things scandalous for the big event? :)

Jesse Ventura was my governor for 4 years - what a ride. You're right, Minuet, he did not run for re-election in the last election - I doubt he'd have been re-elected had he run.

The "funniest" prank that he (Ventura) pulled while he was governor was when he issued a last-minute announcement that he would be holding an early morning press conference on April 1st (one year during his term). It just happened that there was an ice storm that particular morning - members of the Press had a terrible time arriving in time for the conference - car accidents and everything. When the press arrived at the designated location, the governor appeared, said April Fools, and left. The Press was steamed. This is fairly illustrative of Jesse Ventura's antagonistic relationship with the Press pretty much throughout his term as governor.

Jesse Ventura was going to have a show on MSNBC - I haven't seen it yet, and I'm not even sure that the show ever materialized. One thing about Jesse Ventura - he's entertaining.

HA !!

Oh, so he's gone already ! Will Arnie last that long ?

The first sign you see when coming to NZ to apply for resident status is....." no Riff Raff !"

(in case you don't know that expression, it roughly means no bums here !)

You're half right - I am looking forward to the 04 election - but then I look forward to most US Presidential elections; but yes, this one more than most for obvious reasons.............

Whoever wins next year will have a huge sh1t pile to clean up for the whole of their next TWO terms and even after that........!!!

and although it is not uncommon for cabinets to be reshuffled after one term, I still want to see Sec Rumsfeld's face when asked by reporters whether he thinks his sacking had anything to do with Iraq.

It's just great actually - no matter what the results - there is so much to look forward to !!

Oh yes....IMHO the 04 election will be the easiest decision, certainly in my lifetime of politics watching.....I mean, I thought Clinton was a poor President, but.......OMG !!

I doubt that Schwarzenegger will last longer than his partial term (he gets to complete the term that Gray Davis began a year ago). Given the state of politics in my lovely state these days anybody taking over for soon-to-be-former Govenor Davis would likely be a one termer.

For some reason, NZ fallaciously equates Arnold with Jesse. He probably thinks that since they were in the movie Predator together, they must be ideologues. Typical simplistic thinking.

Here's a difference. Scharzenegger is educated (in business and international economics). Jesse was a gadfly who became governor because he received a plurality of the vote.

And this is based on... NZ's personal opinion! Here's two cents, just so you can give an equivalent worth.

I remember when I was a teenager watching this wrestling show that Jessie Ventura hosted. He basically sat on a chair with a rolled up sock in his pants and goofy pair of glasses on and made stupid statements about wrestling matches. I'm glad he wasn't my governor.

Admiral, I agree with you about Schwarzenegger actually being a smart guy. I think that he also has a lot of potential as a political figure because he is very shrewd. However, it seems that they way things work in California these days mean that unless he can deliver quickly (or take credit for any general natural improvement in the state's economy) voters will be looking for another option in the next go round. In a longer election cycle his moderate views on some social issues might hurt him in Republican ranks and moderate Democrats (by California standards) might run to anyone who is not Gray Davis or Cruz Bustamente...

Things have calmed down a lot here now that Davis is gone (he is probably reliving his military experience prior to discharge, you know the so many days and a wake up until he is out).

NZ, I totally agree with you. The 2004 Presidential Election will be most interesting. Not only do I get to watch it....I also get to participate! Hopefully, some errors made in the election of 2000 can get corrected this next time around.

I'm quite jealous not to be closer to the action and to know more of the subtleties of it all; however, whoever wins, the mess in Iraq will dog them for all of their term(s).

As much as I dislike Mrs Clinton, even she could not make a worse job of things.

There are so many things to watch for - look at California going Republican after all the tricks they learnt in Florida. They should keep Florida even after the supposed extra Democratic effort there. (no doubt even more trickery involved this time around).

Without these 2 states, George really would have no show at all don't you think, given that he'll probably lose NY ?

So opines NZ... again.

Stick to New Zealand politics, as you know nothing about ours.

By the way, Al Gore would be president right now if HE COULD HAVE JUST WON HIS HOME STATE of Tennessee.

As for other posts in this thread about "errors made" I suggest those folks read the Constitution... especially Article II, Section 1..., followed by the 12th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, and 25th Amendments.

I probably know more about your politics than you do about ours.

BTW - I agree Gore should have won on 2000 and didn't, as he couldn't carry either his or Clintons home states. Together with the current boffins, that simply tells me there's a huge leadership void in America today.

Probably because I don't give a rat's rectum about your politics. Actually, that'd be wrong. I know quite a lot about New Zealand politics. I just don't think much of them, or you.
