In a speech at an awards banquet for a group of minority attorneys, California State President of the NAACP, Alice Huffman, alleged that Arnold Schwarzenegger is racist by virtue of having been raised by a father who was a member of the Nazi party in WWII. This charge was made a week ago.

To be perfectly fair a representative of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, one Veta Richardson, said that the remarks were offensive. Ms. Richardson found particulary offensive the speaker's remark that "last part of his name doesn't register well with me." Apparently referring to "-negger," according to the article.

Questions on NAACP boss' racism charge

This woman, Ms. Huffman, is a member of the NAACP's national board, served in former Govenor Jerry Brown's cabinet (as director of Economic Opportunity), serves on the Commission for One California (headed by Lt. Gov. Bustamente) and is Co-chair of the Democratic Party's 2004 National Convention. She was also recently named to the California State University Board of Trustees by Govenor Davis.

She has not retracted her remarks, has not offered to resign any of her posts and no one has asked her to step aside. In fact a spokesman for Govenor Davis said: "Alice Huffman is independent and outspoken, the govenor respects her right to voice her opinion even if he may not agree with it at all times."

Time to put something here
Of cores not - it doesn’t go that way. The only time people get in trouble is when they say something bad about a minatory. Didn’t we established that in the limbaugh post?

Talk about double standers – But wait we have to consider the source of who made the off color comment don’t we. It wasn’t the evil Limbaugh this time it was the president of California's National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. How can the president of the CNAAP, who is interested in helping the long suffering colored people be disciplined for such a remark. We need to give a little leeway to help in the heeling process.

Double standard is about right. Where Rush Limbaugh made the front page, this was pretty close to the last page.

Come on now. Are they "seriously" condemming someone because of the actions or political affiliations of their father (nearly 70 years ago) ? Talk about grasping at straws.

Anyway last I heard he had been voted in .... so ..... so much for that. And anyway who cares who the governer of California is.

Well, I do--esp. since one eventually became one of our greatest Presidents ever, IMO. :)

As far as the concept of 'racial guilt,' I don't understand how it can in good conscience be applied to people several years after the fact.

California is, by itself, the FOURTH LARGEST economy in the world (behind the rest of the US (if separated), Japan, and China). That is why it matters. His policies as governor could impact the rest of the world more than France or Britain.

During the campaign, the Los Angeles Times (a supposed reputable newspaper) reported first that Arnold's father was a Nazi (tarnishing the son). They dropped that when is was found that Arnold was a big supporter of groups like the the (Jewish) Anti Defamation League. A week before the election, the same newspaper claimed to have information saying that he praised Hitler! When that accusation was shot down, both the LA Times and the National Enquirer (a weekly tabloid that reports on such important issues like who Demi Moore is dating) broke stories that fifteen women were groped by Schwarzenegger over the past 25 years. It has been a smear campaign from Day 1... and it didn't work.

We do seem to be missing the point here which is the speech made by Ms. Huffman. The substance of the remarks, not necessarily where they were aimed. Consider the positions she holds apart from President of California's NAACP. Especially as a co-chair of the 2004 Democratic National Convention (you know, the one where they will nominate their challenger for President).

Swid.
There has been a double standard for some time,

Rev. Sharp with the Tawala Bralley case.
Sen Byrd with his racial remarks and extended Klan ties.

The comments and attitudes of such individuals are unaccepteble in a civilised socieity. Though they are protected.

I would rather hear what people really think so I can act accordingly, than have the thought police force the removal of such individuals, regardless of thier political affiliation.

All in good fun
