Doesn't this already happen? As I stated, this is already a big part of Schwarzenegger's platform. You may not realize how many "Hollywood" productions are made up here. Schwarzenegger has promised economic reforms aimed at keeping the productions in California. It will be interesting to see if he is able to change things. |

Well, it's getting posted elsewhere that it looks like Govenor Gray Davis has been recalled. He gave his concession speech at around 9:45 PM PDT. Only the San Francisco Bay Area voted to retain the Govenor (about 65% to keep). Below is a map link that shows the breakdown by county. Southern California looks to be approving the recall by about 70% and so is the Central Valley. CNN Election Map- County By County |

24, I don't think I have been completely obscure on what I thought of Govenor Davis' capabilities. A year ago as we approached the regular general election and saw that Bill Simon had about a snowball's chance in the tropics of defeating Davis, I figured that things looked pretty bleak fiscally. Schwarzenegger was not my first choice, I preferred Tom McClintock among the candidates. Former LA mayor Richard Riordan opted not to run because of his friendship Schwarzenegger and might have been the best choice for this state (he's moderate socially as is Schwarzenegger). One interesting observation. During Schwarzenegger's speech when he mentioned his phone conversation a short time earlier with Govenor Davis, some folks started to boo and hiss. He quickly quieted them down. When Davis made his concession speech and congratulated Schwarzenegger on his victory his audience also began to voice their displeasure. Davis' attempts to get control were not very effective. However, he made a very good concession speech and called for an end to the follies. On a lighter note, the stage behind Schwarzenegger was filled with his in-laws (members of the Kennedy family, including Eunice Kennedy Shriver ). I doubt that there has ever been so many Democrats at a Republican victory celebration.

Here are the results: With 97.9% of precincts counted, Arnold Schwarzenegger 48.0%, 3,528,093 votes Cruz Bustamante 32.3%, 2,372,723 votes Tom McClintock 13.3%, 972,573 votes Peter Camejo 2.9%, 206,619 votes Arianna Huffington 0.6%, 42,085 votes Peter Ueberroth 0.3%, 21,273 votes Larry Flynt 0.2%, 14,968 votes Gary Coleman 0.2%, 12,415 votes George Schwartzman 0.2%, 10,612 votes Mary Cook 0.2%, 9,678 votes With this kind of spread between the first and second place finishers, there won't be a recall (Bill's prediction) and they won't recall the absentee ballots. Why? Because absentee voters vote Republican in large numbers. They would not help Bustamante at all. I think a lot of states learned their lesson from Texas in 2002. Rick Perry was running against a guy named Tony Sanchez. Sanchez refused to concede the election, even though he was behind by over a million votes (nearly 20%). He insisted on counting the absentee ballots, which put him further behind (roughly 61-38). That, and the national congressional elections, didn't make the Democrats look good. They were even mocked by the New York Times. But I digress. Some interesting notes about the California candidates for our foreign members. Mary Cook, also known as Mary Carey, was a porno actress. Gary Coleman was a child television star in the late 70s and early 80s. His latest job was as a security guard. Arianna Huffington is a former Republican turned media gadfly after her husband, Michael, was outed during his run for Congress. Larry Flynt publishes a pornographic magazine called Hustler (that makes Penthouse look like The Economist). Cruz Bustamante was a member of a radical student group called MEChA (which stood for "Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan." or "Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan." Their national symbol is an eagle holding a machete-like weapon and a stick of dynamite. Their goal is to "liberate" eight states of the US and "repatriate" them to Mexico, creating a new nation called Aztlan. The states are Colorado, California, Arizona, Texas, Utah, New Mexico, Oregon and parts of Washington. Bustamante refused to condemn this group, whose words and politics remind many of the Nazis back around 1934. I digress again |

Interesting you should mention Bustamente's affiliation with MEChA. I was looking last night for a link with numbers to support some exit poll data being reported on the news. It seems that Bustamente lost about 1/3 of the Latino vote to Schwarzenegger. About 50% ( or a bit more) of Latinos voted "Yes" on the recall. One Latino political strategist bravely announced that the Democrats do not have a lock on the Latino vote. |
