Don't make me use my bare hands on you.
Today is the 30th aniversary of the beginning of the Yom Kippur war. A war in which Egypt and Syria attacked Israel with the intent of destroying Israel. Egypt and Syria had black eyes from the Six-day war 6 years earlier in which both lost substatail territory to Israel. They wanted this territory back and then some.

It was a destructive and deadly war and the first war in which the USA came down firmly on the side of Israel and supported them with a massive airlift of supplies.

The important outcome of the wars was that:

Most of the arab nations finally began to realize that they were not going to defeat Israel on the battlefield no matter how much propaganda and posturing they did. The United Arab Rebublic fell apart and Israels existence was more or less set in stone. Egypt figured out that it would have mush more success reaquiring the Sinai using pen and paper than they would using tanks and airplanes. Egypt eventally got back the land in lost in 1967 through treaty. Syria remains hostile to Israel and fought again with them in Lebannon, this time with no help from Egypt. Israel still controls the Golan heights to this day.

Also, the superiority of US weapons to Soviet weapons on the battlefield was proven. Egyptians and Syrians using Soviet weapons and Soviet tactics were unable to achieve much againt Israel using predominant US weapons (some french). Also, the effectiveness of the US airlift demonstrated to the world how mobile and effective we could be in times of need.

This war decided whether or not there was going to be an Israel and the answer was yes.

Here's wishing that all whom are of the Jewish faith have a very meaningful 'Day of Atonement' today. :)

Thank you both. I had a very good fast this year. Didn't feel too hungry and didn't get a headache as I sometimes do. I just finished having a light dinner (or breakfast really!)
