A friend of mine and I were talking about this the other night, he lives in California too, and raised an interesting question. In the recall you are asked to vote Yes to recall or No to allow Govenor Davis to stay in office. Obviously if you vote Yes, then you get to cast a vote for the person you think should replace Govenor Davis. However, if you vote No and want to keep Davis you still get to cast a vote for a replacement. This is the essence of Lt Govenor Bustamante's campaign (Vote no on the recall, but vote for me anyway). Now my buddy has suggested this idea, by voting No on the recall and then voting for a replacement you are essentially voting twice and for two different people. Bear in mind this is how the 90 year old recall law is laid out. Do you think this is so? Is it a double vote? |

It seems to be simply two elections at the same time to save money and keep some kind of stability in the government. The second vote only counts if the outcome of the first vote is "Yes" to recall. Otherwise, you would need to vote yes/no one day then get everything together to do it again a few weeks later. Of course I don't know much about California politics and am trying my best to avoid news about the race. |

I don't see how it adds up to two votes. Each person has to make 2 separate decisions but I don't think it adds up to 1 person getting to vote twice. A No vote to the recall is not necessarily a vote FOR Davis. Plenty of people are going to vote No who wouldn't vote for Davis to begin with just to stop this ridiculous partisan recall. I also think that it would disenfranchise those who vote 'No' to not be able to then vote for someone they would want to represent them. Cause again voting to NOT recall Davis is not a vote FOR Davis. The first vote is whether you wish to recall a standing official, the second is IF that person is recalled who would you like to take his place. Wow this is kinda lawyery of me but I really see the two parts of the ballot as distinct separate issues. With any luck the recall will fail and California can bill Issa for the costs. <_< |

Just a question out of curiosity that has little to do with the topic. Whether it is true or not the CA recall election is seen by many as a joke (with what has happened) does that not bother the people of CA? |

Dandandat it would bother us if we did not see it as a joke too. There are probably plenty of people that wish it were taken more seriously, but when you have 130+ candidates 127+ of which are not even viable you realize how insane it all is in the end. |
