Trek BUFF
|
This string is in response to some of what I've seen on this site. All have a right to their opinion. I'm not saying any of them are wrong, I just may not agree with all of them. Having a blind faith that "Enterprise" will succeed simply because it is based on "Star Trek" is a lot of what B&B are literally banking on. Partially a built in fan base, partially Jolene's new catsuit (a great insult to who I feel is doing the best work with their character on the series), partially on special effects and partially on the fact that they know everything. They keep wondering why the series is dying a slow death in the ratings. They seem to have been listening to "Star Wars" fans and not "Star Trek" fans. Both genres have made money for very different reasons. One is NOT the other. The Dominion War killed it for me and DS9, the Borg wars and battles killed it for me with TNG and Voyager. Just my opinion. Some folks want a continuing story arc. We'll see.... The "Star Trek" had/has such a faithful following partially because there was a new show each week. We anxiously awaited "new life and new civilizations" each week. We had only a few "To Be Continued" episodes simply those particular stories could not be respectfully told in just one hour. Sure it was science fiction, but we weren't presented with a show that treated us technically as idiots. TNG started out this way. The Great Bird passed and TNG suffered for it. "Star Trek" still beats the other Trek series for viewers in syndication. Where is DS9 on? Where is Voyager on? How many folks watch TNG on whatever channel it is on? I don't even remember. We have the whole series on DVD and watch a few episodes now and then. We also have Star Trek on DVD and watch it more often. Enterprise, in its third year, is already struggling for viewers. Why? Because it doesn't know what it is. It is only rarely Trek. A label does not make it Trek. Rethinking the third season, reworking it since the end of the second before it even begins, again shows that B&B haven't a clue of what Trek is all about. I'm just really disappointed the potential of the series was never even sought by B&B. There's just so much which could have been accomplished with the series as a prequal. Right now, it's about 50% terrible, 30% joke, 10% stretch and 10% really great Trek. That final 10% is only what keeps this Trek buff hangin' on. Some may disagree with me. No problem. It just doesn't mean I'm wrong. We'll see... |

Time to put something here

I must agree, They went with the prequel idea because it was something new (which is what trek does need) but they haven’t used it to its full potential. They put a party woman on the screen and for get about the story. I believe its a symptom of being to high on the hog B&B have made so much money up until now riding on the fixed audience that they have forgotten (or maybe never had) how to write a good story. Now that the Fixed audience is starting to fall away B&B don’t know what to do with them selves. |

It seemed to usually take 2 or 3 seasons before any of the previous series really found their footing, so I'm hoping Enterprise will still come into its own soon. The original series gave us a lot of what's commonly called "morality plays" and those were the shows that made us think. So far, Enterprise has only had a few of them in its 2 seasons. I'm hopeful that we'll get to see more morality plays rather than just action, action, action (which is what Star Wars seems to me to be). We're starting off this third season, for instance, with Trip wanting to kick some butt over his sister's death. Who could blame him? -- that's a natural Human reaction. However, TOS frequently tried to get the message across that seeking vengeance won't bring back the dead, and getting revenge can still leave you feeling empty. If we can see Trip struggling with that kind of moral dilemma, maybe the audience can learn something about Humanity. Roddenberry used to try to present an improved, enlkightened Human race, one that would say, "Yes, we were a savage killer species, but we've learned to say that, no, I won't kill today." I'd love to see Trip make that spiritual journey this season. War story arcs (i.e., the Xindi in Enterprise and the Dominion War in DS9) can make for dramatic storytelling. Drama is entertaining, and we like drama. It might help boost the ratings. I just hope that the drama can also include a moral message in the end. If that's the case, then Enterprise just may eventually end up being Star Trek after all. |

Thanks for the responses. Part of what is bothering me about "Enterprise" is that if there has to be a conflict, why a whole new group such as the Xindi? Why not just begin to start seeing what lead to the Romulan War? There's just so much wrong with the path(s?) the series is taking. I really don't understand what B&B are attempting to do... Why not a prequal to what we know/knew? Why not let us see how Earth gets its deep space legs? Why not the wonder of venturing out into the final frontier? It's just so dang frustrating! Is it worth even contemplating? The whole thing is really just pushing this Trek buff away. |

You're preachin' to the chior Brutha. "CAN I HAVE A WITNESS?" Actually, Trek, I think that was the hope of many a long time Trek saga fan. According to one of the other threads, B&B are going to change the show again next season. Yes, they had a chance for action as they told the story of the Romulan war. Yes, they had the chance to add drama as Archer et. al. tried to form the basis of a federation with races that did not, or did want to, see the threat. Yes, they could have done much with what was alluded to in past incarnations of the show. But instead, they produce shows such as "Bounty" where T'Pol is in heat. A change in the background music and it could have been "space porn". Geeze. By the way, how the heck are you these days? And your better half? All words were typed using a manly font in a manly font size. I had Christopher Lowe sp? coordinate my posts. "YOU CAN DO IT" All in Good fun ANOVA |
