Anyone see The Hobbit? Is it suppose to be a prequel to Lord of the Rings?? I went to see The Hobbit a few days ago, wow there is some spectacular CGI's. I was kinda freaked out during most of the movie. I have never seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies, but that Elijah Wood guy was in The Hobbit. And what's up with that little creepy critter? Does he have a dual personality? He kept talking to someone named "Precious". |

Saw the Hobbit this weekend. I was kind of disappointed. I found myself wondering at times if someone had put George Lucas in charge of this project. From a broad perspective they took a book that was a good 3 hour movie and they filled it with a bunch of fluff that they made up and removed parts of the book that were actually relevant and spent a lot of time with CGI masturbation. It is obvious they were stretching this out and filling it with fluff to make sequels and try to milk us for more money. The Dwarves. They made them a bit more comical than I think they should have been. I didn't remember Larry, Moe, and Curly being three of the dwarves. Maybe they felt like they were lightening up the movie a bit, but it was annoying in almost the same way that the Phantom Menace was annoying and it took me out of the movie. Radagast? He was mentioned in passing in the book and they made up an entire ridiculous character right out of a silly Disney cartoon based on him. Made my stomach turn watching this terrible character talk to the cute cuddly animals and ride his stupid rabbit sled. Why, why, why did you put this crap in the movie? All the unclever foreshadowing of the LOTR trilogy. So unnecessary and really kind of ruined the story of the Hobbit which was the adventure of Bilbo and the Dwarves. Didn't need to set up movies that we have already paid billions of dollars to watch. Waste of time and made the plot incoherent at times. More fluff for no reason other than to stretch this thing out to multiple movies. Gandalf and the Lady of Lorien. Ughh. I thought they were going to start making out. I realize that this story has no female characters, but to just put this in for no real reason was painful to watch. More foreshadowing to movies that have already been made and done successfully anyway. The comic Goblin King, meh. Why? This is not a kids movie, it's PG13 for Pete's sake (see what I did there?). And yeah, like with Attack of the Clones, we realize you can do fancy crap with expensive computers. It's not impressive, really, it's a video game. Just so much CGI overload, what was the story and plot again? What did I like about the movie? The Dwarves in Bilbo's house was mostly well done. The scene with Bilbo and Golum was good. But, this movie was NOT the Hobbit. |

I thought it was an enjoyable enough film to watch but was too long. I think that it would have benefitted from losing 45 minutes or an hour, with the extra footage saved for an extended edition home release. I also question the 3 film strategy. I think 2 might have been better in terms of the film quality, but presumably it is about money. |

I've had the best part of 4 years to get over my disappointment with the most recent Star Trek movie and I still feel let down by what a mess that movie was.

Geez you guys are a bit harsh on The Hobbit. I thought it was wonderful, and went back and seen it three more times! I loved the CGI and thought that Riverdale city was so beautiful - especially on the big screen in digital projection. Now I did think the goblin's scene and all that chasing through the underground tunnels was too long. And I was still creeped out by that little goblin critter who had the gold ring and lost it. But the costumes were so cool, as were all the different sets and background. Oh, and maybe lose the fight scene with the giant rock creatures. I loved The Hobbit and can't wait for the seqeuls. It was a fantastic escapism for me and kept me interested the entire 2 hours and 46 minutes.

And another thing..... You male gender types always think any kind of emtional support from a female means she wants to hop in bed with you! I mean seriously, sometimes we women just want to be supportive without any sexual strings attached. I took the scene with Gandorf and Lorien to mean that they possibly had a romance during their younger years, and now just want to remain close friends.

Speaking as a male gender stereotype, I don't think that at all. Maybe I don't have a lot of experience with women outside my family wanting to be supportive anyway. I did think that the scene in question, with the longing looks and all that was intended to convey some sort of romance. I don't even know why it was in the movie. Just a we interrupt this movie for a big WTF, you may now go back to your unending hours of unremarkable, meaningless computer graphics and try to imagine that there is a plot here.

Oh I thought it was kind of a sweet moment between Gandorf and that lady. You know us females need a bit of romance in any movie we watch. Yeah, I just stereotyped women in general.

You don't seem like you have been all that interested in The Hobbit as the book and follow on series. I have read all of these multiple times and the Hobbit movie was a big disappointment. They threw away the plot and went on a CGI/violence masturbation spree and packed in tons of fluff to stretch it out to sequels in order to milk the customer base. Pathetic. I won't be going to the theaters for the next movies. I'm just disgusted. And all the CGI stuff is just making the movie industry lazy. It just isn't impressive. It's like watching a high-end video game. I am underwhelmed. That is part of the reason that I watched The Empire Strikes Back with the kids this weekend. They used special effects that were actually special. Edited by Hoss, Feb 6 2013, 05:29 PM.

Oh I see where you are coming from. No, I haven't read any of the books or have followed the series at all. I had no idea what The Hobbitmovie was going to be about. So you're saying it was all about making money, rather than keeping in the content of series? |
