Don't make me use my bare hands on you.
Just finished watching what there was of this series. 2 season, 20 episodes each.

This was a very well written series and I'm sad to be done with it. Almost like a Stargate Voyager. A team manages to dial a gate in a certain way such that they reach to an ancient star ship in another galaxy. But they are under attack when they make the connection and the place is destroyed and the are stranded on the distant starship. The starship is called Destiny and is making a path through the universe studying some mysterious pattern across the cosmic background that would appear to have been left there by a grand intelligence that created the universe. But, anyway they have to survive on this ancient ship and gate to nearby planets to find food or whatever while Destiny travels its course.

The acting and casting are great. The writing is wonderful. A shame it only had 2 seasons. I don't know what network it was on, but it just couldn't find a market I guess.

One of the main characters is now Rumplestilskin on Once Upon a Time, he's a good actor.

Anyone else ever watched this?

It was on Syfy and appeared at the time to be an attempt to make SG more like BSG. To me it felt a bit like a variation of "Voyager:, or even a bit more like "Space: 1999" (due to their inability to control the ship). It never really clicked with me. It was missing, at least I think so, the essential humor that ran through the preceding SG series.

I found that the second half of the the second season got to be very funny in parts. It was like the writers and actors got a could feel for each other.

The interplay between the two scientists who worked with Dr. Rush. They were always trading barbs.

The episode with two Dr. Rushes, where he gets aggravated with himself.

But, by and large the series was very serious and the characters didn't lighten up that much until later. This kind of makes sense as they are all thrown into this situation and it takes them time to get to know each other.

Definitely like Space:1999. I couldn't get into it. It was Stargate: "The Search for Groceries".

Hated it.

Oh, I continued to watch it to the bitter end, but largely because the idiocy of the producers. They were unbeliveably aggressive in going after any online reviewer who dared not to LOVE IT!!!!! with every fiber of their being.

After one of the producers publicly ranted about the stupidity of the viewers who didn't love it, I followed a link to Television without Pity and ended up posting there for the duration of the series as we gleefully ripped the thing to shreds after every episode.

I didn't have that experience.

I think what I liked most about it was the actors.

I don't know if they so much got a feel for it or, rather, realized too late what an important and missing element humor was in the franchise.

I get the idea that they wanted to go in a different direction, but in the end it really hurt the franchise by doing so.

I would absolutely agree that the best thing about SGU was the actors. :D

The guy who played Eli was one of the better ones.

Well, they seemed to be chasing the big intelligent design message and I don't think that they could ever realistically solve that without painting themselves in to a corner.

The automated weapon drones served their purpose but would eventually need to be left behind.

I thought they were going some where with uploading different consciousnesses into Destiny's computers and maybe they would have developed that further if the show had not been cancelled.

Season 3 would have provided a brand new Galaxy to get across and explore.

They also had the time travel angle to play with.

When I think about the first season of TNG, it was pretty bad compared to the later seasons. The writers, actors had not quite gotten the character relationships and personalities developed yet and that is something that takes a season or two. They seemed to be gelling in the last half of season 2 on SGU.

I feel that the series had a lot of potential but failed to live up to the promise. The first and second seasons could almost have been different shows as the personalities of many of the key characters, seemed to me, to have changed.

I agree that there was not enough humour and too much angst. I wouldn't have minded a more serious show then SG1 and Atlantis, but there is a balance to be struck I think.

I like character driven stories but I think there was too much of this. Too much focus on who fancies who.

I loved the Rush character in the first series but I think his character became confused by the second. His motives were unclear and seemed to switch around all the time. I wish the writers had the bravery to make him either a nasty character or an antihero and not to keep swapping around.

Shame really because I can't see them making another series of Stargate.
