That’s cute, but it doesn’t seem to be very accurate, which I think has to do with the way the artist chose to create time lines; it seems he wants to say that travels to the past always created a new time line, but this isn’t true.

I think it would necessarily be true even for minute changes. You can't not have an effect on something. Just by breathing you are making small disturbances in the environment. Butterfly effect sort of thing.

But certainly saving the school teacher's life in 1885 counts as a major effect that would spawn a new timeline. At any rate, Clayton ravine is now Eastwood ravine.

Time Line 1:
a) Ernestine travels one minute into the future: No change to the time line

b) Marty see’s the Doc die from the terrorists and then travels back in time in order to escape from being killed himself.

c) Marty saves his father from being hit by his grandfathers car; he himself is hit and while in the care of his mother’s family his mother falls in love with him: This action creates a new time line.

Time Line 2:

a) Marty’s parents do not attend the under the sea dance together like that should have. They also don’t fall in love and have kids (Marty) like they should have.

b) Marty causes his father to stand up to Biff which in turn cause his mother to fall in love with his father. Marty also passes a note to Doc Brown warning of his future death: This creates timeline 3.

Time Line 3:

a) Time line 3 is very much like timeline 1 except for some noticeable differences. His father is more confident, Biff is a loser, and Doc Brown isn’t dead.

b) Doc Brown travels into the future to check the place out and finds that Marty’s kids are loosers. He travels back in time to get Marty to somehow set them strait.: No change to the time line.

c) Marty finds out he’s a bit of a loser himself in the future because of a car accident that leaves him unable to play his guitar.

d) Old Biff steals the delorean, travels back in time, and gives young Biff the sports almanac: This creates time line 4

Time line 4:

a) Unwire of the changes to the timeline Marty and Doc Brown travel back to 1985. There they are surprised to find that they are no longer in time line 3 and that Biff has built himself a small empire.

b) After Biff tells Marty how he was able to build his empire, and right before he was about to kill Marty; the Doc saves Marty and together they travel back to 1955 in order to steal the sports Almanac and destroy it.

c) Marty steals back the sports Almanac and destroyers it: This should have caused the time line to revert back to time line 3.

Time Line 3:

a) The delorean, being piloted by Doc Brown, is struck by a bolt of lightning causing the Doc to travel back in time to 1885.

b) Now in 1885 the Doc unwittingly alters the time line yet again; saving a school teacher named Clayton from falling to her death over the side of a ravine, as well as some minor changes. : Time line 5 is created.

Time Line 5:

a) In 1955 Marty, just after seeing the delorean being struck by lightning and disappearing, receives a postal from Doc Brown in the past explaining how Marty is to forget about him and travel back to 1985 and put all the time travel nonsense behind him.

b) After Marty seeks out the aid of the 1955 Doc Brown; the two discover that they are now in time line 5; most notably because Clayton ravine was in fact not named after a school teacher who was suppose to die by falling over its edge.

c) While preparing to send Marty back to 1985 the two discover that Doc Brown now stuck in 1885 does not live out a happy life that they thought he would, but instead is shoot dead by Biffs grate great grandfather. The two decide to send Marty back in time to save Doc Brown from that future (or is it past)?

d) Marty gets into a tangle with Biffs grate great grandfather and the outlaw sets his sights on killing Marty instead of the Doc. We see that he succeeds as a picture that was suppose to show the tomb stone of Doc Brown changes to read Eastwood, the name taken by Marty while he’s in the past: Time line 6 is created

Time Line 6:

a) Marty thinks that by simply avoiding the outlaw Tannan he will avoid being killed, and he and the Doc set off trying to get back to 1985 using a steam engine train to propel the delorean.

b) When the outlaw Tannan tracks down Marty they have it out and in the process the tomb stone that was supposed to be used to mark Marty’s grave is broken causing the tombstone to disappear from the picture: This would technically be time line 7.

Time Line 7:

a) Marty lives as Tannan goes to jail; the Doc and Marty set out to put their steam engine plan into action.

b) While in the last moments of the plan; the Doc must abandon getting into the delorean with Marty in order to save Miss Clayton who hitched a ride on the steam engine in order to talk to the Doc whom she loves. The plan works and sends Marty Back to 1985 to what is suppose to be time line 3 again: Time line 8 is created.

Time Line 8:

a) Marty finds himself back in what looks like time line 3, except there are some more changes. One is that Clayton ravine is now called Eastwood ravine (supposedly after a crazy guy who hijacked a train and drove it over the ravine.)

b) Marty also takes the opportunity to save himself from the car accident that makes him a looser in 2015 time line 3.

c) The Doc shows up in a steam engine time machine and says the future isn’t written yet so that keeping track of the time line isn’t important.

I say that by the end of the final movie, they are on a new timeline, different than the one at the end of the first movie.

First, while Biff didn't keep the sports almanac, he did meet his future self, see the sports almanac, interact with Marty again, see the flying Delorean, wreck his car again, and lose the almanac. This must have had some affect on his future and his future is connected to Marty in 1985, even it if it is just waxing his truck. Also, Doc Martin of 1955 is given the full schematics to his own time machine which he had yet to invent.

Second, the teacher Miss Clayton was saved from her death in 1885, which had an effect on at least the name of a gorge in 1985 as well as a story about a teacher dying that kids enjoyed telling. Also, we have a change in a grave stone. The history of Bufford Tannin. The clock in Hill Valley was photographed with people from the future. The Frisbee may have been invented. ZZTop's ancestors were involved somehow. Ancestor McFly receives a valuable gun and buys a new hat. A train engine is stolen and destroyed and its passengers travel is delayed. Doc Martin stays behind and marries Miss Clayton, has two children and builds a train/time machine somehow avoiding being prosecuted for train robbery.

I agree, that would be time line 8 from my overly winded other post

As Chief OBrien once said, "I HATE time paradoxes."

I think you guys are reading too much into the movies.

Let's just say the story began in 1985 with Doc inventing the time machine using his entire family fortune. He was convinced he succeeded when he send Einstein into the future using stolen plutonium. The terrorists discovered the theft of the plutonium they had rightfully stole for their plot and chased Doc to Hill Pine Mall. Marty witnessed the murder and got into the car. He didn't realize until too late the time machine was set for 1955. This is when the time lines start to tangent. Marty unintentionally started to change history when he saved his father from being hit by his grandpa's car. Doc convinced Marty to stay close to his father while he made modifications to the car to accept a lightning bolt to power the flux capacitor so he can send Marty back to the future. At the end of part one George McFly learned to stand up to Biff and discovered he can earn a living by writing and selling stories. Marty did return to 1985 and learned how his father had become a successful author, Biff had turned into a lowly mechanic and he had won the truck of his dreams. He had saved Doc's life with the note. This could of been the end of the story but the writers introduced a new twist by introducing Doc from 2015 into the picture which led to part two.

Are you with me so far? :chin: :headscratch:

In Part two 2015 Biff stole the time machine and went back to 1955 to give himself a new future using the scores from the 2015 Sport Omniac. Marty and Doc discovered how Biff had changed the past. They back to the past to fix the timeline by erasing and repairing the damages Biff had done. At the same time the original timeline which had survived the changes continued as expected from 1955 when Marty burnt the book. Marty witnessed the Delorian being stuck by lightning which led to part three and the conclusion of these movies.

In Part three Marty seek out 1955 Doc. With his help they sent Marty to 1885 when Marty discovered Doc is living as a blacksmith in Hill Valley. Most of Part one and two were about Marty and his family history. In Part three we learn more about Doc Brown and his family history. The only constant throughout the movies was the Tannan. Bifford "Mad Dog" Tannan was the bully. Only this time it was Marty who stand up to him and save Doc's life again when he presented the 1955 newspaper article to him. Doc was all set to go back to the future with Marty when he unintentionally fell in love with Clare Clayton after he rescued and saved her life.

At the end of part three the time machine was destroyed but Doc came back to the present with a new, even more futuristic time machine made from the train. The timeline had remained intact and all of them lived happily ever after. The end.

The bottom line is this - Marty McFly learned his family came from Ireland and settled in Hill Valley in 1885. The Brown family came to America in early 1900. We don't know much more about the Brown or Tannan family. However the game base on these movies explore all of them in more details but that is another story altogether.

So in the end there were only three timelines - 1885, 1955 and 1985 which remain intact. The 2015 timeline had changed throughout the movies. And as Yoda once said, "Always in motion is the future." It is not set and will continue to change as we move forward to the future.

Okay. Enough of these. Had anyone seen my keys? I need them to go back to the future. Nuff said.

If only I had a Mr. Fusion and a Flux Capacitor.

True but I think part of the fun is to continue the speculations of what a good scifi story can do, no? :chin:

I could easily recreate the flux capacitor. It is simply three tubes of LED lights set in a sequence. As for Mr. Fusion, that is a different matter altogether. BTW I discovered the energy created by a lightning bolt is well beyond 1.21 gigawatts. It is much closer to 12 terawatts.

I guess we won't be traveling through time in an expensive sports car going at 88 MPH any time soon.
