Here is something that might worth thinking about. :chin: Winter is coming as temperatures began to drop everywhere. We had an increasing amount of commercials and multimedia messages encouraging car owners to switch to winter tires. Questions - Do we really need them? Or is this just another ploy for tire manufacturers to squeeze money from us? What is the purpose of all season tires if they cannot handle winter driving conditions when temperature drops below 7 degree C? What are your thoughts on this subject?

Generally speaking - living in a city like Toronto where the temperatures stay a bit warmer due to the effects of Lake Ontario - I have been able to get by with all weathers. However I see the need for those in colder climates who get a lot of snow to get full snow tires. And for sure anyone who lives in a rural area who gets less or slower snow removal services.

Don't make me use my bare hands on you.
We are not even technically required to have tread on our tires here. But, if you have a British car you have to buy tyres.

Adding to what Minuet said, there are places where snow tires are really necessary. Now here in, proverbial, sunny California on the coast you would never need them. If we head for snow country we just break out the tire chains (or tyre chains for those Land Rovers...).

In the Greater Seattle area, snow tires aren't really necessary.

There is little need for snow tires here in southeast Texas. While we had snow twice last year, neither accumulation exceeded 1/4". All season tires are best.

That being said, when I was a kid in New Jersey my father had two sets of tires for each car. The snow tires had little studs and wider tread to help navigate on snow and ice. We lived in the Raritan Valley then, but never got that much ice (plenty of snow, though). When radial tires came along many folks no longer had two sets.

But today Dad still has two sets of tires for his cars because of the steep hilly area in which they live. If they lived in the old home town he would probably be fine with all weather.

Tire technology has made huge advances in the past thirty years.
