Of course my Astros are lounging in the cellar. I think the Mets' season is already over. At least the Rangers are tied for first in their division. Maybe we'll drive to Arlington to see a real game next month.

I wonder how the Hiroshima Carp are doing?

Well, the World Series Champ Giants aren't looking repeat worthy. Still, it's early in the season and I am beginning to look for games to watch now and then...

The Rangers have looked good in the early going. They always play the BoSox tough.

It's too early in the season to panic.

Actually watched the Astros come back for a win over the Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth last night. Tieing run scored on a wild pitch and then they loaded the bases and a base-hit won the game.

I felt like the fans in Major League who were saying "who the hell are these guys?" Hardly recognized a single player.

It was even weirder watching the AAA game MLB Network showed Tuesday of Buffalo (Mets) against Lehigh Valley (Indians?)...seeing guys who have already spent time with the Mets (Evans, Duda, Niewenheis) surounded by guys who don't even rate mention as up-and-comers...Tim Teufel is the manager at Buffalo this year, Wally Backman ended up getting Binghamton (AA).

I'm alway up for seeing the Cardinals get beat, as old-time Mets rivals. I was at that game when Terry Pendelton hit the homer off of Roger McDowell at Shea Stadium 9/21/87, top of the 9th, 2 strikes, 2 outs and Roger served a meatball...50,000+ fans that were screaming their heads off and you could still hear the crack of that hit in our seats in the upper deck by the left field foul pole...and the place went silent.

We have a AAA team close by. I may go to a few games this year. Since they switched to the Rangers farm organization, I have lost some interest in them.

When lived in West Haven in the mid-90s, the New Haven Ravens played at historic Yale Field just minutes from me, saw many, many games there. They started out as the Rockies AA team, then were part of the Cardinals, Mariners and finally the Blue Jays system before moving to New Hampshire, where they still belong to the Jays. Saw Craig Counsell, Neifi Nerez, Mike Farmer, John Thompson and Todd Helton play there, and for opposing teams saw Derek Jeter (Albany-Colonie Yankees), Rey Ordonez and Edgardo Alfonso (Binghamton Mets), Bobby Abreu, Mike Lieberthal, and Scott Rolen (Reading Phillies), Vladimir Guerrero (Harrisburg Senators), Juan Pierre (Portland Sea Dogs) and Luke Scott (forget who he came up with, he used to hit the Ravens so hard we'd say "DON'T trust the Force, Luke!!").

It was a Wednesday night ritual with my oldest when she was 3 if the Ravens were home, my wife worked at night, so we'd hop in the car, it was $5 for my ticket, free for her, $1 to park, food was cheap, I had made my own scorecard book, and at the end of the night, they used to give away the leftover hotdogs. Couldn't beat it.

Miss having an affiliated team close by, we have the independent Bridgeport Bluefish next door (Atlantic League), but any names with them are those on the way down or trying to catch back on, not the kids on their way up.

Back in the day the Yankees AA team was in West Haven, saw Stump Merrill when he managed there, and players Buck Showalter and Mike Heath (whom the Yanks sent to the Tigers where he had a respectable career), got both of their autographs, and saw Rickey Henderson on his way up (Jersey City Indians) as well as Wade Boggs (Bristol Red Sox). On a Used Equipment Day I got a bat used by Joe Lefebvre, who eventually became a front office guy for the Yankees and who was once considered for the manager's job.

Shows how out of touch I am. When did the Express switch from the Astros to the Rangers?

We're going to an Astros game tonight. They play Milwaukee. I still can't get used to the Brewers being in the National League.
