Hey guys, I could do with a little advice. As part of my promotion to Manager at work I need to complete a couple of tasks. One you can't really help me with (Reducing waste on my department lol) but the other one should be right up your street! What my group has been tasked with is this: We need to come up with a list of potential social events for the staff over the coming twelve months. Head office has send an email saying that Tesco staff don't have enough fun in store and they want us to lighten up a bit. So for instance things like non-uniform days, quizzes in the staff room, pool competitions, Wii competitions (We have a pool table and a Wii in the Staff room). A few idea we have come up with so far are: A "Mr. & Mrs." style quiz on breaks. For those that don't know it's basically a quiz where you answer questions about your 'partner'. It doesn't matter that most of the people aren't a couple in a relationship at work. We all work together and know each other well! The questions can be amusing and a bit shocking but nothing too offensive. Obviously we would have a prize for the winning 'couple'. Various Non-uniform days Each year we have a few of these (Yesterday for Valentines Day for example, everyone was allowed to come in wearing pink shirts if they wanted) The only downside is that not everyone participates because of budget or because they feel like a prat. So they need to be cheap, and practical. Competitions in the Staff Restaurant We have a Pool table, and a Nintendo Wii in the staff area. Over Christmas last year we had a Wii competition with was a minor success. In the past we have had pool competitions too. We were thinking along the lines of Days v Nights in the pool. A series of heats and then a final between the respective winners of their shift. They are only three examples, but they can be pretty much anything you like as long as they are relatively cheap, and fun! A few rules to consider though: 1. We need ideas for the three main Holidays of the year. Easter, Halloween, and of course Christmas. (I know Halloween isn't technically a Holiday, but it's good for a laugh!) 2. No branded clothing is allowed, although in the past we have had days where people come in dressed in their favourite football teams kit, so I suppose the rules are flexible. 3. It has to be fun! We also have a Charity of the Year (Which no-one seems to know what it is yet, but i'll find out by tomorrow evening) and we can do events for that where people for instance pay a pound to come in non-uniform for the day. Last year the charity was Marie Curie Cancer Care and I don't think the total raised for them has been announced yet but one store in Cheltenham managed to raise over £100,000 by dressing up as Pirates! Marie Curie Tesco page ![]() That was just one themed day in one store. In 2007 for the British Red Cross we raised over £4.6 million through events like this, so it's worth it if we can get ideas that not only help staff have a good time at work, but help people in need too. Anyway, that's it! That is what we have been tasked with! Quite simple, but to quote Tesco's own slogan "Every little helps" and I could do with a little help with ideas from you guys if you wouldn't mind. Thanks for reading! |

I can't really think of anything but if you have to come up with a programme of events it might be good to plan it around the seasons just because it could help you to come up with ideas. So for example you could have an event based around Easter, one around summer and summer holidays and so on. You could also do something around Warrington's local history. |

I don't think this thread is in the wrong place at all, Ten Forward seems as good a place as any ![]() One quick suggestion for now, about the non-uniform days. Have a "Jeans for Genes" day. Idea is that everyone comes into work wearing a tatty/favourite pair of jeans. In a school, the idea would be that, for the 'privelige' you contribute a £1 or something like that. Not sure how you'd feel about asking poorly paid staff to do this, so I guess you could just have donation boxes on the service counters for customers to donate to, that kind of thing. Obviously, publicise it as well. As well as being an event that is fun, relaxing for the staff, its inexpensive, very unlikely that anyone will feel excluded (hell, everyone has jeans! ) and the bonus is that it raises money for kids with genetic illnesses.Btw I didn't know you'd been promoted, so congratulations Mike

Do you have any kind of budget for these special days? I ask because the staff still needs to be identifyable to customers so I wonder if you are able to get special t-shirts. At my former place of employment we always had to wear our vests, except for one day where Wal-Mart was sponsoring a walk-a-thon and we were given t-shirts for the occasion. Other ideas were sports events played against other stores (we did soccer and baseball, and I think they may have gone bowling once too) Pot luck lunches/suppers where people bring in a treat that highlights thier ethnic background. Company sponsored bbq lunches for the staff. Oh, and mentioning bbq - the staff association regularly set up a bbq outside the front doors to raise money for charities. Different departments took responsibility on different days. |

First, congrats on your promotion to manager. Now we have a reason to call you Big Mike, Big Boss. Second sometimes being a manager is a whole lot harder than it seems. I was on the waiting list to take a course in leadership and team development seminar for six weeks starting in March. Unfortunately since my company had started feeling the economic shock wave of the global economy crisis, this potential for management training and career advancements had been suspended until further notice. One of our primary tasks as manager is to find ways to maintain team morale and exceed our service level objectives on a daily basis. Is this what you are talking about, Mike?

Thanks for the suggestions. DCS, that is exactly what I have been thinking about doing. I just need to find some events each month that people have heard of! Local Warrington history is a good idea, but many of the staff are from Liverpool and North Wales so i'm not sure it will appeal to them. It's going on the list though! Min, we do have a budget but as yet it is unconfirmed. Tesco supply promotional t-shirts for certain events (Such as the Race For Life) but they are a nationwide roll-out. This is just for our store. Getting T-shirts for all the staff could be expensive since we have almost 400 of them! Digifan, yes as a manager I have to motivate staff. At the end of the day we have a job to do and a motivated team with high morale will do that better than one without those attributes. One of my stranger motivational tactics is Motivational Grunting. "Hgggrrruggh!!!" Very loudly while clenching fists. It's more of a joke but it keeps people smiling lol |

The suits in the head office need to get out to there stores more; and I have the dancing videos to prove it. ![]() I would recommend against "Mr. & Mrs." style quiz on breaks." something like this can go down hill fast. Naked Wednesday? Fun; and it will draw a crowed to the store. Edited by Dandandat, Feb 15 2009, 10:30 PM.

Store Enthusiasm Day; where employees will be encouraged to express their enthusiasm of the store they work at; They can make up their uniforms with buttons and slogans; invent songs to teach the other employees; pep rally style things. And the employee or set of employees who are the most enthusiastic win a prize of some sort. If you are able to coordinate between stores; maybe you can suggest to the head office a video competition between stores. Each store will be tasked to create a 5 minuet video of any format they wish with their store being the central theme. Example; A store can pretend to do a moke/funny news cast centered around people and events at their store. Than all the videos from each store can be collected and put somewhere for all employees to watch and have a laugh over. Maybe the head office can pick the best one and some honorable mentions. |
