I saw this today: http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/92024/?fp=1 My first thought is, if the first family has codenames used by the Secret Service, why are these being circulated? What's the point? Oooh, the CINC (POTUS) has a cool code name, but EVERYONE KNOWS IT. That always struck me as incredibly stupid. Before anyone makes the claim that this is a rightwing conspiracy to assassinated the new president who is revered by the rest of the world because he opposes an unjust war and advocates a new inclusive government (sorry, I had to get that out in one breath): The Secret Service gives code names to all important persons under their protection. President Bush is known as Tumbler. Laura Bush is known as Tempo. Former President George H.W. Bush was Timberwolf. Sorry, just my two cents. Feel free to comment, but I did NOT create this thread for the purpose of creating the nickname you want to give a current or former president and family. (Create your own jokey one in Ten Forward.) What I want to know is whether or not you think announcing these code names makes any sense to you, a voter (or not)... member of the polloi (since the "hoi" is redundant), an average joe... If the purpose of a codename is that you can talk about someone with others, potentially listening in, not knowing who you are talking about then releasing them to the public makes no sense. Of course it could all be fake and they actually use different code names to these but put these out to try and throw people off. |

Releasing the codenames of the President and Vice President families is stupid. They need to find out who leaked the codenames and fire them. |

The code names are probably only used for ease between the secret service them selves. Easier to say "Radiance coming up" than "President elect Obama coming up" in a pinch. Also the fact that all the names sound the same probably isn't a coincidence. Even over a staticy ear peace the recipient will know one is referring to a member of the first family even if the who message isn't received. I doubt you could keep the whereabouts of such public people secret simply by using a code name. And in the event that that had to keep the presidents (or anyone for that matter) whereabouts secret, than he would most likely a code word designated simply for that mission. Thought up at the moment it is needed, like in ever other operation of it type. I would hate to be Sasha, every one else gets cool names, my sister is called Radiance for the rest of her life, and im stuck with rosebud. boring |

And Karenna Gore was "Smurfette". In this age of modern technology, communications and encrypted transmissions, perhaps code names are more of a tradition rather than a security issue. Especially when the President elect and his family's code names are plastered all over the internet. |
