I said this in earlier post and I've seen nothing to change my opinion so far.. Obama comes across as a smooth talking salesman...all show no substance. If great speech makers make good Presidents then he'll be one of the best, hope he has great advisers to help run the country McCain comes over as an honest straight talker (relatively honest as politicians can be) and highly experienced in the political realm, Republican performance in the last two terms aside. I have concerns about his ability to outlive his Presidential term due to advanced age... shame he didn't get a run in 2000 I think he would have out performed Bush's Presidency A look into the past of Australia's political history may give some insight into the possible future of the US. In the early seventies the Australian Labor Party went into an election campaign with the slogan "It's Time" for change. The conservatives had been in govt for an unbroken run of 23yrs The campaign focused on the sputtering national economy, health care, and the withdrawal of troops from the Vietnam War, as well as governmental reform. Sound familiar? The tired old conservative govt and it's policies were swept away at the polling booth and a reform driven, enthusiastic but inexperienced new govt hit the ground running. Three years later, a world oil crisis, a raft of political reforms as long as your arm, our economy in ruins and a growing believe an inexperienced govt had been too great a gamble, a political bombshell exploded amongst us. The sitting Labor govt was sacked by our head of state, a general election called and me as a young man with little interest in politics left shocked that a democratley elected govt could be removed by anyone short of a military coup. I was sure the people would feel as I did, completely outraged and re-elect the sacked govt but the people once again showed their collective wisdom and returned a conservative govt in a landslide election result. The experiment of a brave new world ended for much of a decade before Labor were once again trusted with govt. But one of the legacies of the "It's Time for Change" was a universial health care system which the conservatives have being trying to dismantle ever since at their own peril at the ballot box. Whichever way it goes I'm gonna miss the Letterman sketch "Great Political Speakers". never fails to make me laugh at the comparison of "ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country" then comes Bush.... you gotta laugh Edited by whitestar, Nov 3 2008, 04:05 AM.

Same thing pretty much happened in November 2007 when Howard and his bunch of cronnies were ditched (and we wound up with wall-to-wall Labor governments at state and federal level). |

I think McCain was smart to pick an outsider. The Dems had dirt on the other favorites. Besides, "Reagan conservatives" like Palin are the future of the party and the country club Republicans are the past. |

If Palin is the future of the party , they are in big trouble and so is the USA if she ever gets into a senior cabinet role in the whitehouse. Most people over there must cring everytime she opens her mouth. Edited by somerled, Nov 3 2008, 10:42 AM.
