Don't Talk to Your Girlfriend Like Democrats Talk About America October 29, 2008 Imagine, folks, if you talk to your girlfriend or your wife the way Democrats talk about America. They profess to love America. Obama professes to love America. But they spend 24/7, 365 pointing out all of America's imperfections. How would this go over if you said things like this to your wife or girlfriend? Honey, I love you, I really do, but God, I really hate your life history. Some of the people in your family, all those good deeds and so forth, intentions and so forth. But look at these people that you have in your background and your family. I actually think because of your family you're a rotten racist homophobe, you've stolen everything that you have. You didn't earn it. You're out there, you're using way too much electricity; you're wasting gasoline and so forth. You're destroying the planet. I love you, honey, but you're destroying the planet, and you don't even care. I hate it when you disagree with me, by the way. In fact, I want you to shut up. And if you don't shut up, I'm going to get somebody in here that will make you shut up. I'm going to sew your mouth shut. But I still love you. I don't like the way you look. Your rear end is too big; you need bigger breasts; you need a face-lift. Look at what you've let happen to your nature. You have torn your nature up. You are destroying your nature. All these things that you've done, you're horrible. But I love you. Whatever you're going to do to fix yourself, I want you to pay for it out of your pocket, and if I'm unsatisfied with the results, I'm going to berate your history; I'm going to berate your looks. And if you disagree that you're either too religious or gun oriented or stupid to understand it, I'm going to make sure you understand that you're nothing but a bitter person clinging to your religion and your guns because there may be people moving next door to us that you don't like. But I love ya and I do want to be your guy. By the way, honey, everybody else hates you, too. Until you straighten yourself out, everybody in the neighborhood's going to hate us. It's up to you straighten yourself out. Well, this is what Democrats say, it's the UN analogy. They claim to love us, all the while running this country down every opportunity they get. Rush

Sorry - but this is a ridiculous comparison. You are not talking to an individual when you discuss your country. You should be able to talk about your country without insulting people.
Geeze, let's not discuss what might need to be fixed. Let's just pretend everything is perfect - just like Soviet Russia used to do or like China does now. Gee - let's not even hold an election because after all everything is peachy keen.

Just my opinion, but the constant barrage of "America sucks" talk is tiresome.
I'd love to see Obama do a speech on the topic of "Why America is great."

I somewhat see your point AB - but the opposite is also true. The right seems to want to ignore problems and pretend they don't exist.
Reality is somewhere in the middle. There are great things about your country, and there are things that could be a hell of a lot better. What you need is leadership that knows which is which.

I think a car is a better comparison. If you love your car, but it's getting a little old and has a few problems that leave it running somewhat roughly, do you just let it break down or do you do what it takes to fix it? And which would be the better proof that you love your car?
Truthfully, however, girlfriend and car are both WAY too simplistic to merit a proper comparison.

"The left" can't be all lumped together. There are some extremists out there and maybe that's who you mean. But, if you're truly talking about the majority of the ones who point out faults with our current system, it's not "America sucks" talk, but a desire for this country to be all it can be - what better representation of love of country is there than that, short of maybe dying for it?

Um, why only talk about what is wrong with America? I can practically recite the doom and gloom from the Obama camp, even though I only hear them in sound bites. Especially if that is ALL you hear. Democrats are eternal pessimists.

Yeah, right.
Interesting that those on the right get intimidated when they try to raise this point.
Also, Republicans PC? Hell, the left invented that restriction on freedom of speech. Speech codes SUCK, IE.

In general, "only" isn't accurate. Sure, right now, that's all you're hearing because it's election time. And I guarantee you next time a Republican is running against an incumbent Democrat all you'll hear from them will be gloom and doom too.

Yeah, right. Interesting that those on the right get intimidated when they try to raise this point. Also, Republicans PC? Hell, the left invented that restriction on freedom of speech. Speech codes SUCK, IE. I agree. But I wasn't trying to quiet anyone down because I didn't like what was being said...
Edit: I'm not agreeing with the intimidation part. I don't find that "the left" or "the right" are treated differently in that respect.

When republicans were raising the issue of subprime loans, the CRA and Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, they were called racist.
Seems as though they are damned if they do or damned if they don't.

If you think about this for half a second you realise just how stupid the content of the opening post is.
You would expect a party that has been out of office for 8 years to be highlighting what they think is wrong with the country. If they thought the other lot had got it 100% right why would they be bothering to run against them?
More than that you would expect any politician to be talking about what is wrong with the country and how they are going to address that. Even incumbents do it. If they thought everything was sorted, everything was perfect they could just pack up and go home.
Most people get into politics because they dont like how things are and want to change them. Few people get into politics because they think everything is perfect and want to keep everything as it is.
Newsflash - America is not a perfect utopia governed in a perfect fashion. No country has achieved that. Not even the UK One of America's greatest strengths however is its ability to debate what is going wrong and to change and adapt to make things better.
That is the star quality of representative electorally based systems of government (I hesitate to use representative democracies because I know people here dislike that term applied to the United States). Unlike in a dictatorship where changes are only made at the whim of the dictator(s) in a representative system we have the right to say - this is wrong, change it!

It's amazing how the media can distort our impressions with sound bites.
