Since this poll was old, and some people have switched OSs, I decided to recreate the poll. You have much more OS choices, besides Windows. Also, you can choose multiple choices (which IIRC, you couldn't do in the old poll?), as some people use more than one OS.My options are: Windows XP Home Edition Mac OS Classic (in emulator) |

It's a long story. But basically I tried to install Windows NT 4 on to it, but somthing got messed in the hard drive while I tried to partition it, and the install never worked. Then I tried to reinstall Windows 98 SE, and that didn't work either. After that, I figured since the ssytem is so old anyway, I'd just upgrade it. I'm looking at an AMD Sempron 2200+, 256 MB RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, and a new copy of Windows XP Home. It should cost me under $300.

Couldn't you have done a system recovery?
Yeah, you should upgrade that Win98 machine, as Windows 98 is very old. Also, the system properties dialog box (when you upgrade the Win98 machine) might not recognize all the RAM, possibly because some of it is being used by Windows. My computer has 256 MB of RAM, although the System Properties dialog only says 248 MB. |

I tried that. That's what I ment when I said "I tried to reinstall Windows 98 SE." After the recovery, things got messed up more. I think the hard drive was starting to die anyway, as when I did have 98 SE running, I would get random BSODs, freezups and reboots.
That's how it is on my new computer. I have 512 MB RAM installed, but the System Properties say 504 MB. I belive it's due the the motherboard's onboard graphics system, which uses system RAM. |

I have a computer with 512 MB of RAM, yet all the RAM is shown on the System Properties page. I know it doesn't have more RAM than that because the 512 MB of RAM amount was shown on the computer's box it came in. If it's the graphic system that's causing the System Properties to not list the complete RAM amount on the computer I'm using, then the graphic system on the other computer with 512 MB of RAM must use hardly any memory at all.

I have got everything updated, and my sytem RAM does indeed show 224 MB RAM, when I really have 256 MB installed. It seems to have no effect on preformance though, Windows XP seems to run very smooth. |

Yeah, on my computer Windows XP runs very smooth, even though some of the RAM is being used.
