Well....
Depends on what you want the thing for? Do you want a Home console or a Handheld?

Handhelds are great for trainrides, buses, other people driving you, lunchbreaks, stuff like that. Consoles are more (nowadays) hub of activity, due to some being able to play DVDs, play music Cds, save music onto the console stuff like that.

Anyway I'll start with Consoles. Popular ones at the moment are the big three.
Wii (Nintendo)
Playstation 3 (Sony)
X-box360 (Mircosoft)
I'll start with the Nintendo Wii

If you want lots of fun, with lots of friends go with Nintendo Wii, lots of multiplayer games are being make for this console. A few serious (less cute graphics, more realism,) stuff is being made, but the Wii hasn't got a powerful graphics card as other consoles. However it's a great console to be active (less time sitting down) with since it uses movement to control some actions (although it tends to be arm and wrist movements, it's still better to stand up and play).
Also this is the cheapest of the big three consoles, the smallest in size, and not the powerfulest of the lot. However, the controller uses Two AA Batteries, so if you play it alot you'll drain them quite quickly. Although, it does give a good bit of warning before they powerout.

Playstation 3 + X-box 360

Not much really between the two consoles, so I'm putting the two together.
Playstation is the newer console out between the two, and also more expensive, however it has got a better graphics chip than 360. Most games tend to be out on both machines. 360 tend to have a lot of problems at the moment with internal stuff causing alot of machines to be replaces. Playstation hasn't seem to be having any problems at the moment.
I know that Playstation controllers are movement active, although not as good as Wii's controller. 360's controller has no such ability.
Playstation can link up to the console to recharge the battery. Not sure what the 360 does.
A lot of games on both consoles tend to have a lot of blood, death, gore, guns and weapons. However most of the games that don't tend to have these elements tend to be of very poor quality, except sport sims.

I prefer the Playstation out the lot, even though mine doesn't arrive till next week. Wii is also a good console. No comment of 360, due to me lot liking mircosoft itself (I'll tell why later, as well as give a handheld advice, and a list of games, for each console)

Handhelds.

Right, there are olny two up to date handhelds. They are "PSP" and the "DS". PSP stands for Playstation Portable, and it's made my Sony. DS stands for Duel Screen, and is made by Nintendo.

PSP
Is really a mini Playstation one. The Graphics are really good for a handheld system, the ability to do lots of things with it like, get pictures, videos, surf the web, and put music onto it, means it's alot more than just a Video Games product. Also when you turn off the device, then turn it on later on. It'll put you right back into the action, along as you have the battery power, which it has never done on me, but it can do it.

DS.
Graphics can be really good, but most games for it tend to be too cute, and don't push the graphics to what it can be. It has a touch screen on the bottom, and a normal screen at the top, as well as a microphone built into the device. When you close the lid of this console it goes like the PSP, however this drains the battery quite well, and normally over 3/4 hours it would have turnned itself off (Mine has done this on many times when I failed to shut the system down).

Both systems can use Wi-fi, and wireless networks, and can play games over the interweb.

Both systems are really good, and I couldn't really pick either system over T'other.
(Next Games.)
