Ward Sucks Up In BloodRayne II
Zack Ward told SCI FI Wire that he couldn't pass up the opportunity to star in BloodRayne II: Deliverance, despite the fact that the first game-based film was a critical and financial disaster. Uwe Boll, who directed the first film, also has helmed the follow-up, which finds Natassia Malthe (Elektra) replacing the original film's Kristanna Loken as Rayne, a dhampir, or half-human/half-vampire.
"Blood Rayne was horrible," Ward acknowledged in an interview. "It was nominated for three Razzies, I think. I did a film with Uwe Boll called Postal, which I starred in. It's a $20 million action comedy. It's got Osama bin Laden and George Bush holding hands and skipping through a field while a mushroom cloud explodes in the background. It sounded fun and iconoclastic and kind of like a Dr. Strangelove. I haven't seen it and don't know how it came out. But when I was doing Postal, Uwe said in his German way, 'We are shooting BloodRayne II. You play Billy the Kid. Ja, OK, you do it.'"
Ward added that his motivation was simple. "They pay money," he said. "I got to eat. Ben Kingsley was in the first BloodRayne, and he was the big bad guy in that. I'm the big bad guy in BloodRayne II. For the first and probably the only time in my life I can say with impunity that as the big bad guy in BloodRayne II I am better than the big bad guy in BloodRayne. That means that I'm actually, technically, better than Ben Kingsley. It's the only time in my life I'll be able to say I was better than Ben Kingsley. And why did Ben Kingsley do [BloodRayne]? Because he had to eat."
Ward, whose genre credits include Charmed, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the upcoming Transformers, said that the opportunity to play a vampire also appealed to him. "Everybody loves playing a vampire, man," he said. "I got to do some really cool stuff as a vampire. Storywise I don't know if it's going to make that much sense, but the makeup and design of the character I got to do was cool. It's a western, so I got [to] redesign the wardrobe. I basically stole the wardrobe from Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell from Tombstone. I got the hair and the makeup from Interview With the Vampire. I got the teeth from Drac Studios, which custom-made them for me. I got the contacts idea from Underworld, but switched it from blue to green. I got the accent from Gary Oldman's Transylvanian in Bram Stoker's Dracula. I put it all together and wrote some of my own dialogue and ended up coming up with this sexy character that's an amalgamation of all the good aspects of vampires I could find." BloodRayne II: Deliverance will be released later this year.

"BloodRayne 2: Deliverance" was quite an interesting movie. She fights vampiric cowboys.
