I'm just glad there are Americans who know what a fortnight even is. And the Centrelink payments are very low because they are essentially government hand-outs for people who don't have jobs. If you have actual shit you need to pay like rent and medical, it becomes more flexible. It's low, but hey, it's better than nothing. |

I am on social security disability, so I get $694 / month because I can't work. so you Aussies and your centrelink is better than my stuff... though after you factor in the other benefits I get, I probably get more than you... I get ~$100 for food, and ~$600 for rent / bills, and free medical/dental/vision (which pays for all my hormone meds and doctors' bills), so all in all, I make nearly $1400 / month when all is taken into consideration... |

not exactly 100% sure, but I know I suffer from a number of psychiatric illnesses, and if I believe any of the numerous psychs I've visited all my life these are including and not limited to: OCD, ADD, ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, PDD-NOS, Chronic Depression, Manic Depression... Not sure how many of those (if any) actually fit... I take some amount of pride in having a condition that no one has been able to actually nail down... However, I got on disability when it became apparent that I had issues... Here's the cycle I had: Get a job, part time or full time, doesn't matter Hold job for a month or two (upwards to 3-4 months if the job is particularly good) Start becoming dissatisfied with the job and my sanity starts taking the toll, I end up with suicidal thoughts and massive self-worth issues Issues start interfering with job performance, thus performance tanks Get fired for poor job performance Become suicidal, make some attempt or refuse to get out of bed for 2-3 days straight (no eating/drinking) Wind up in mental hospital for 2 weeks over a 2-4 year period I obtained over 40 jobs, and that pattern repeated itself each and every time with each and every job. |
