Traveler of a Thousand Years

Has anyone seen this anime or read the manga? If you haven't, you should give it a shot. It is one of the most cleverly written and funniest series, created by Mine Yoshikawa (if the name sounds familar, she designed Angol Fear for SCIV, based off one of her characters in this series). The series premise is a group of frog-like aliens called the Keroro Platoon have come to earth to take it over...but are completely horrible at it. In the first episode/chapter, Keroro (the titular character) is easily captured by the Hinata siblings and forced to do their chores for them. The characters are completely oddball and memorable: gundam-obessed Sgt. Keroro, violent war-mongering Corporal Giroro, Keroro-crazed fan Private Tamama, mad scientist Kululu, and push-over ninja Dororo. There's also the occult obessed Fuyuki, frog-dominating Natsumi, their incredible sexy manga editor mother Aki, bi-polar Momoka, and klutzy lord of terror Angol Mois. Both the anime and manga make tons of parodies of famous series, the anime even more so, especially with Gundam (since the company who produces the Sgt. Frog anime also owns the rights to the Gundam franchise). The anime is more toned down with the violence and fanservice for obvious reasons, and also has a slightly altered storyline (characters are introduced earlier and/or different order and stories are rewritten to include them) Funimation has made the Sgt. Frog dub, and has done quite well. Some of the jokes had to be changed for western audiences, but still are hilareous (like Keroro's GET TO THE CHOPPER reaction when he first experiences seawater). The VAs are well-picked, especially with Giroro, who is voiced by Chris Sabbat. No one else could emulate Giroro's humorous violent streak. If you're not sure, you can check out subs on the funimation website and/or youtube. And just to give you guys some samples, here's some of my favorite clips: Giroro's Belt Kululu the dentist Dororo and flowers Death Note Parody I highly recommend this anime. And if you're still unsure, maybe this will help you male fans and lesbians at least...

I have eleven volumes of the manga, and recently got the "Season 1, Part 1" DVD set (oddly enough I haven't gotten around to watching the second disc yet, though). Good series, though. As you've probably seen I've already drawn Natsumi and Momoka. I also like how this series shares characters with other series created by or with involvement by Mine Yoshikawa; Mutsumi also appears in Seven of Seven, and Honey Melody appears in Seven of Seven and Arcade Gamer Fubuki, etc. |

If anyone's interested in getting the dub (which is very funny even with the westernized humor), the first season is out now and the second will be availible in January. Fans of the series will be happy to know season 1 will include the entire Keroro Platoon appearing, though this was because the anime had made it so all of them appear earlier than they did in the manga (And Dororo only appears in the final episode of season 1 DVD) I have a cast list for anyone curious about their VAs: Keroro: Todd Haberkorn (Allen Walker: D. Gray-Man, Kaoru-Ouran High Host Club, Watanuki: xxxHolic) Tamama: Brina Palencia (Chopper: One Piece, Anita Hailey: Case Closed, Yue: Negima!) Giroro: Chris Sabbat (Like I mentioned before) (Piccolo: Dragon Ball Z, Armstrong: Fullmetal Alchemist, Jigen: Lupin the 3rd, Zoro: One Piece) Kululu: Chuck Huber (He does Kululu's laugh at a slower tone than the seiyuu) (Frankenstein: Soul Eater, Hiei: Yu Yu Hakusho) Zeroro/Dororo: J. Michael Tatum (Eneru: One Piece, Hiroyoshi Aso: School Rumble, Kyoya: Oura High Host Club) Fuyuki: Leah Clark (Nodoka: Negima!, Coby: One Piece) Natsumi: Cherami Leah (Road Kamelot: D. Gray-Man, Naomi: Witchblade) (Irony here. She plays Natsumi who hates Keroro played by Todd Haberkorn, but her other character, Road, loves Haberkorn's character, Allen) Aki: Jamie Marchi (Juri: Yu Yu Hakusho, Claymore: Helen) |

What's a shame is earlier this year I met Chuck Huber, Leah Clark, and Brina Palencia; too bad Sgt. Frog wasn't out then or I'd have had them sign it (I have a signed Shin-chan vol. 1 by Huber and Palencia). There's a clever little oddity in Dororo's debut ep. The ferret-headed alien is voiced by Chris Cason, doing his Chamo voice from Negima. However in the credits, the voice is credited to Albert Chamomile himself (Cason is listed in the additional voices, though). |
