I dunno if anyone knows, but I tend to not stress at all. Maybe like once a year.. but not very often (because not too many things like school or drama bother me) -- lately there's been a lot of talking about future and college and all that jazz [yeah, even though we're just freshmen] since the choices of our electives for next year are coming up "I mean, it's not like I'm gonna MAJOR in music or anything in college. Probably right after high school's over, my singing career's going to be over and... and what? I spent 4 years singing when it related to nothing in my future? I need a change. I need to find what I want to do when I'm older, and I'm gonna stick to it." (-my friend (who's been in choir since I don't know and has her own vocal teacher and made all eastern) said that) I've been taking band since 5th grade, where I played the flute, and then I switched to bassoon in 6th grade and have been playing in band ever since [9th grade] but.. I don't like it. I mean, I'd continue playing band if it was still middle school, where nothing really matters yet, if there were only like 4 choices to choose from-- but I'm in high school now. We have WAYY too much to select from to stay huddled in band, and just this year, I realized how much I loved making things. I mean, I always knew I liked to make stuff, but.. nothing about making food I mean, I was horrible. I burnt hash browns for microwaving, I microwaved aluminum foil (stupid, I know), every time I tried to cook, either the food or I get burned... it was horrible but ever since I started trying to cook eggs instead of microwave, I realized one thing; if I can crack and egg and beat it, I can bake a lot. If I'm able to dump an egg into the frying pan and fry it until it's ready, I can fry lunches and dinners why didn't I do this before? and despite my rejections, my good buddy had forced me to bake some cookies with her, and despite the horrible (mis)counting of how many cups of baking powder we put in, how I accidentally mixed solids with liquids, they still tasted great if I could make something yummy even with mistakes, if I really applied myself and tried, how would it taste then? For my birthday, I baked cupcakes for miscellaneous friends in my lunch period (last minute) and lazily decorated them for V(alentine's)day, I got down to business and planned everything 2 weeks ahead. I made sure I had enough ingredients (I ran out of cupcake powder for my birthday and only baked not enough), made sure I had enough time.. I spent 3 hours (happily) in the kitchen bustling about, singing along to music, decorating the cookies (not lazily) and made a batch for 96 cookies (obviously it didn't come out to that much because... it never does for me) so I figured instead of continuing band, I could try out cooking, or "contemporary food design" (although I have no idea what it is, I'll be sure to check with my guidance counselour, but I assume it's that the cake's already baked, and you learn how to decorate and design the cake. I used to love doing that when I was little, too.) Maybe in junior year when I drop my history class (because I'm really no good in history), I can take two electives-- band and whatever I do next year, and senior year I can continue that (and since all the Spanish teachers are deadbeat, I should drop that too) which totals to 3 years of both with band at the side as a growing hobby and creating things with my hands and heart as a growing passion, I can make something out of myself. Finally. Posted Image I cut up one of the cupcakes that looked horrendously ugly and decided to take a picture. I didn't make this from scratch (more like the "add water, eggs and oil!" powder) and was pretty simple. I mixed the vanilla and strawberry flavors to try and get the swirl effect, but it didn't turn out as swirly as I wanted it to be Posted Image heart cookies I baked for Vday for my friends. I actually had leftover (because I was being a stingy dungbutt and didn't wanna give a lot to people because I didn't think they deserved a heart) These were made from scratch and I watched Mulan as these were being baked Posted Image more flat, circular cookies that I baked for Vday for my teachers. There were some times I thought my classmates were gonna shun me for being a "teacher's pet" (but I always like to do small things for my teachers) it took me probably an hour to think of designs and actually decorate them took me 3 hours total to bake and decorate the cookies D: I'm in the process of teaching myself to suck up criticisms and actually improve upon them so I won't get the same comments ever again, which is necessary when you're serving others. that's just about the only school stress I have right now and the fact that I think the guy that sits next to me is cheating [ON MY PAPER. NO ONE CHEATS OFF OF ME.] in science. Yeah, so I'm gonna get him straightened out. Punk. He's gonna get what's coming to him. he thinks that just because I was rank #1 in the class and the teacher recommends me to honors bio that he's gonna cheat off of me? DON'T THINK SO. I THINK I HAD A 75% OF FAILING THAT QUIZ. HAD NOOOOOO CLUE WHAT I WROTE. |

:sparkle: wow, jess, i'm impressed :] those look nice and delicious! i would encourage you to keep exploring this newfound creative outlet. it obviously makes you happy to do it. and you're already building on your creative talents, like we've seen before here at the forum. even if cooking isn't exactly in your future, you're gaining experience in an avenue of art, in this case culinary. and there is so many different ways to go in that field. and hey, like you said, its still just freshman year, so you have a lil time to still figure things out, but its good to try this out. when i was a freshman, there were tons of kids already applying for early enrollment to colleges, so yeah, theres some pressure to get on the ball about that, but don't let it stress you too much this year. these are just electives at this point, and its gearing you up for what you will want to consider to take up in college. worry about keeping up those grades tho, that way you'll have a better selection of colleges to pick from. there's a saying that sorta goes: if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. i myself made the mistake of not following that advice. i was good in math and history in school, but i also loved art and animation, ever since i can remember. while the other kids just loved the cartoons, i also like the animation process and knew different styles, like charles schulz did those bugs bunny cartoons, and tex avery did some funny ones too, even knew and loved anime style of animation before i even knew it was a japanese thing. but for some reason, instead of listening to my own heart, i followed my dad's advice, and went into financing and accounting. (he used to work on wall street). tho i was good at it, i didnt like learning it, or doing it for a living. i so wish i had gone to school for something more art-related like animation, graphics, whatever (like david is doing now). so, if theres any advice i can give, its do what makes your heart happy, as a career path. hopefully, what you're doing now, you'll learn to love even more as you educate yourself in it and gain experience, and with that, focus on your future in it. good luck, kiddo. p.s. thats pretty cool that you've taken criticisms and using them to improve yourself rather than let it get you down. wicked cool. omg i wrote so much -_- |

not as much as I wrote D: the problem is I don't even know if I'll change what I want to be, because my opinions and interests change often (I've been trying to fix that too) and I'm a quitter D: which is bad, because when it comes to something like this, I can't quit >__> |

You could always pull a Cathy Shim and major in some bio related field to keep the parents happy but then take acting classes and end up doing regular acting gigs for Reno 911. Cooking and baking's a good skill to have. Makes you less dependent on heating/microwave. |

my mom was thinking I could major in culinary arts and something science related (she thinks I'm some science genius because I was ranked #1 in my class -o-) because apparently double majors for girls is impressive? I know that I'm good at accidentally being good at science though :o today I got a quiz back (36/36) out of guessing o_o HAD NO CLUE WHAT I WAS DOING AND I HAD NO PERIODIC TABLE WITH ME. WHEE. |

You know what, Jo, up until i started my weight loss project i was never able to carry to the end what i'd start. Usually i would loose focus of it and simply drop it. Honestly, this is like 4th time i've tried to loose weight and i'm for the 1st time i am 7 months in and still going strong with no sign of quitting whatsoever. One of the reasons i haven't giving up is because i decided to tell everyone in my life what i was doing. That way whenever i felt like giving up i would remember you, Angelo, David, Angus, JiYoung, Chee, Mal, Joe, Nick, Kev, Elaine, and family and friends. Do i want to let all of you down? h*ll no! Now i'll be honest i didn't read this completely but felt that Angelo and Angus have already giving you quite the advice and i felt like giving a different kind of advice. Plus, we all understand what you're going through and trust me is completely normal. And remember as much as you don't want to let any of your family and friends down the most important person you ought to not let down is you. |

NO MORE STRESS, DOODE YOU'RE TOO LATE it seriously ended after an hour because I worked it out with my mom and yesterday I talked with my guidance counselour about my schedule and I decided-- yes, after 4 (painful) years-- I'm quitting band for good, I'm not going back junior year either so it's basically and the food stuff is semester courses and my counselour suggested sophomore: Basic Foods 1 & Basic Foods 2 junior: Contemporary Foods and Technology 2 & Contemporary Food design senior: International Foods & (not sure) Independent Living (basically teaching how to wash clothes, pay bills, balance checkbook, etc.) yeah~ on my way to victoreee |

NO WAY, JOSÉ I wrote something somewhere about what I aspire to be once I become a chef "I wanna be a chef~ I'm not quite sure what kind (I like making pastries though) but I wanna be a chef like.. not just known in a small area, like a worldwide sorta thing. That people wouldn't just come because it's a cool shop name or it looks colorful, but because some people tried it, and liked it enough to recommend me to their friends, or online to all across the world~ Such high dreams for someone who only started baking a few months ago, but ambition = motivation! (no sushi though -o-)" sushi was because he tried coaxing me into making sushi for him |
