Top 5 Most Overhyped Games

With the release of Halo 3 just over two weeks away, fans of the sci-fi shooter series are vibrating with unbridled excitement. Human tuning forks, almost.

But many a game has stumbled over its pre-release ballyhoo, whether said hype was deliberately conjured through marketing or generated spontaneously by fans. And the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

While we've got high hopes for Halo 3 when it debuts Sept. 25 on the Xbox 360, a quick glance at the history books reveals a video gaming past littered with the husks of titles that couldn't live up to their lofty expectations. Here are five classics that stand out.

ENTER THE MATRIX (2003, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC)

With the Wachowski brothers themselves on board to write the story and shoot new footage just for the game, how could this lose? Building a game designed to dovetail with the release of The Matrix Reloaded was a no-brainer.

Literally, a no-brainer: The game was dumb, buggy, boring and had terrible controls. And yet it sold like cat's-eye sunglasses at a Matrix fan convention, proving that, like movies, some games are simply critic-proof.

SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE (2002, GameCube)

While the feisty plumber Mario has been spun off into so many games that we've lost count, the "core" Mario games are almost without peer, and are always with tons of advance excitement.

Which is why everyone expected Super Mario Sunshine to be another classic. And yet the final product was just... OK. Some found it too derivative of previous Mario titles, others found it too hard, and many (including yours truly) got bored long before finishing the game. Mama mia, Mario! Even you can't always be perfect.

METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY (2001, PS2)

Metal Gear Solid 2's failure to live up to its giddy advance hype can be explained with one name: Raiden. He was the androgynous, whiny protagonist of MGS2, replacing series stalwart Solid Snake. Thing is, nobody wanted to play as Raiden. Raiden sucked.

Add to that the ridiculously bizarre storyline, brutally bad dialogue and interminable cinematic cutscenes (which, ironically, were what fuelled much of the game's hype in the first place), and Metal Gear Solid 2 stands as a failed experiment in deviating too far into left field for a sequel.

HALO 2 (2004, Xbox)

One of my biggest regrets as a so-called professional game reviewer is giving Halo 2 a five-star review in 2004. But journalists are human too, and like so many others I got caught up in the tornado of hype surrounding Master Chief's triumphant return to the Xbox.

It's not that Halo 2 was bad, heck no. And the multiplayer component still stands as one of the best examples of online play on a console. But was it five-star good? No. The single-player campaign was underwhelming, the segments spent playing as the alien Arbiter weren't as much fun as Master Chief's bits and the game's cliffhanger ending felt like robbery.

The wunderkinds at development studio Bungie promise Halo 3 will atone for all its predecessor's sins. Still, this time we're going to dig in our feet and lean into the winds of hype, so as not to get blown over again.

DAIKATANA (2000, PC)

Legendary game developer John Romero probably wishes he could go back in time like Daikatana's protagonists, just so he could eliminate the advertising campaign that announced, "John Romero is going to make you his b*tch."

Those immortal words, and the untold millions of development dollars sunk into this history-hopping first-person shooter, meant Daikatana would have needed to be nearly flawless in order to live up to its pre-release buildup. It wasn't. Not by a long shot.

Like a lot of overhyped games, Daikatana wasn't terrible, just overwhelmingly mediocre. But when the gap between expectation and reality is a chasm of Grand Canyon-esque proportions, someone's always going to take a long, deep fall.

Step lightly, Master Chief. Step lightly.

Arnell, did u manage to finish Mario Sunshine?

Thing about MGS2 is that when i got to play it i hadn't played the first one and therefore i didn't mind the addition of Raiden. Still, MGS2 managed to bring so much more than i could've ever expected. And having played the first MGS on the Gamecube kinda left me dissapointed cause it wasn't as big as MGS2 IMO.

I don't remember Enter The Matrix being that hyped... but i'm sure glad i didn't play it. lol

And you should add L.A.I.R to that list. haha

Oh and Lu, why do you hate Halo?

Yes, I did.
100%.
I do agree that it wasn't that great a game.
I liked it, but I was expecting more.

Never played the other games.

So you don't like First Person Shooters? What if they made Barbie blow stuff up with a Rocket Launcher like in Halo? heh

Oh, I thought you wrote the article about the overhyped games. heh. oh well.

Overhyped - CSI: 3 dimensions of murder - ooh you can walk in 3-d and solve crime puzzles! with five new extra long cases!

Too bad you can solve the whole game in like 5 hours (one hour per case), and that's not even by a big-time gamer.
Woof!

Lu, when i think of you i think that you don't play Barbie games. It be like me thinking Arnell plays the Olsen Twins games or that Angelo enjoys Hannah Montana on the DS. So, don't worry i'm not saying you do... i'm saying they do. lol

I have to agree completely. But, i think we're starting to see developers getting more time wth these movie turned video games and realizing they do need to put a quality product, not just a movie tie-in.

Lu, if you got an N64 then i got one word for you... GOLDENEYE! Play it, it rivals most First Person Shooters in the last 5-7 years.
