Video stores seem to be flooded with these "straight to DVD" titles and the problem is that one bad straight to DVD title can account for all of them in the eyes of the consumer. You see, regular theatre movies are all seperated and therefore if you didn't like Snakes on A Plane that doesn't mean The Illusionist is going to be bad. Now it aint just one or two or even three that suck, the majority of these independent movies do.

Now i stick to only theatre released movies and occasionally there's your bad apple but most are solid. I keep hearing "you can't judge a movie unless you've seen it" and that's true, but are you really gonna be excited about watching a movie like Transmorphers? Which is obviously capitalizing on the success of the new Transformers movie. Now, amongst the rotten apples are few that do rise above the tide, one in particular is Crash, one of the best movies i've seen in years and still manages to capture my attention even after having watched it more than 3 or 4 times.

Straight to DVD movies are good but if i were to compare it to anything it be licensed movie games. Most of them are average and don't bring anything new to the genre or format.

i havent rented too much lately...

straight-to-dvd movies are usually the ones i might get if all the other wider-release movies are out lol...but not all are bad...i'd say...if its a sci-fi-ish movie, then it might not be so good, but documentaries and some comedies, there might be some good ones out there...cant judge it til u see it of course! and some big budget wide release movies suck too lol

There are plenty of bad theatrically released movies to try before tapping into the straight-to-DVD realm, which I reserve just for anime.

Crash wasn't straight to DVD.
It was in theaters.

Snakes On A Train, THAT was straight to DVD almost right after Snakes On A Plane was released in theaters.

I love renting independent straight to DVD movies. Some of my favorite movies are those. I've had my share of horrible ones but those are fun too because when your with a group of friends you just make fun of them haha.

As for movies that rip off bigger movies like Transmophers Id never get those. I like orginal straight to DVD movies not rip offs.

thats right...forgot about those independent movies, which just dont have the distribution deals that big budget movies do...also...many asian movies come out straight to dvd...although that may not count since they have been shown in theaters in their originating country.

My bad, Crash didn't open here in PR so basically i saw it straight to DVD. Still, i guess it doesn't count.

And i'm not saying theater movies are the bomb, there's a lot that suck. But if you compare a bad theater movie with a bad straight to DVD movie, you're bound to see that the straight to DVD title has more suckage cause it stank so bad it wasn't even approved to be seen in theaters. lol

I think the problem i have with straight to DVD movies is taking a chance on them. You see, movies like The Prestige, Smoking Aces, Blood Diamond, or Apocalypto are titles that i somehow heard or knew and with that in mind i can sit down and watch something i know is of quality. Why? Because all of them were released in theaters. Now movies like The Science of Sleep, Are You Scared?, First Born, 1700 Block, or One Night With The King are all titles that i've never heard of...which means i have to waste 2 hours of my life to see whether or not it's actually worth it...then again...life's like that. lol

I know and it's not the director or the producer's fault. I mean a lot of times these major studios don't wanna invest money on ideas that will make them loose huge amounts of money. So it forces the little guy to go independent and therefore have a lower budget which results in not so spectacular movies.

^alot of independent movies do well and they end up on the bigscreen sometimes. but i feel theres this misconception about dvd movies being lame or not worth watching. and its totally not true. take the movie 13 for example. that movie is amazing, anyone whose seen it will agree. espcially anyone whose a girl or someone who had to raise a teenage daughter
currently dont have one LOL
