Fictional Short – Table For One

Man: Mm…

- As I entered the restaurant, I noticed it was more crowded than usual. I scanned the place really quick before the hostess came up to me. She asked how many people were in my party and I told her that it was just myself. She told me to wait for about 5-minutes for a free table to clear up. So I sat down and looked at what was the special for the night; Anime Rolls.

Hostess: Hey, your regular is here.

Waitress: He is? Great!

Hostess: He's waiting up front.

Waitress: I will take care of him.

Hostess: Like usual.

- A couple minutes later I look up to see a familiar face. She greeted me with that smile I grew to like.

Waitress: Well, look who is here.

Man: Nice to see you, too.

Waitress: I think there is a couple about to leave. Do you and your friends mind sitting closer up front?

Man: Oh, it's just me tonight.

Waitress: It is? Why? You are always here with your friends.

Man: Well, the ones I usually come with are either out of town or with their families in town for the holidays.

Waitress: Aww…what about you? Why are you not with your family?

Man: We're doing stuff tomorrow. Besides, it's Friday. Supposed to be here every Friday.

Waitress: Hehe, yeah. I don't think my Friday nights will be the same if I did not see you and your friends here.

Man: Only me tonight though.

- She turns and says something as the couple leaves the restaurant. She then leads me to my table and I sit down. She sets down the food menu. She begins to set the drink menu down, but takes it back up.

Waitress: I know what you are going to ask. I will pick something for you like you always ask me to. I will make sure it is something you will like.

Man: Thanks.

- I watched as she walked away. She looked cuter than usual. Might be her bright green socks, very noticeable. I did wonder though why she had not worn her headband like I had seen her wear when first coming here. I thought that was cute also. I guess I can't really complain. Herself being here was what made me happy to come here every Friday. And the meals were enough to fill me up for the night. Although I would usually draw out my food and drinks here with friends around to talk to. Alone…I might end up just going through dinner quickly. Well, maybe tonight I could muster up some courage to talk to her more than usual. No friends around to feel embarrassed if I did something stupid…only her to look stupid in front of.

Waitress: Yes and thank you.

- She comes out with a tray of food. She goes to the table next to me and tends to the people there. Couldn't help myself, but I eyed her when she came into view. I'm sure she has noticed me checking her out by now. Although I could say the same for her. I do catch her sometimes looking right at me and quickly turning away when I look in her direction. Mm…could be just me over thinking it. Of course any waitress would be looking at her customers to check on them. Maybe I just fantasize too much. Just then she turned to me.

Waitress: I will get your drink soon. Are you ready to order?

Man: Oh…not yet. I haven't decided. Anything you recommend?

Waitress: You have been here plenty of times. I would think you know what you like here by now.

Man: Yeah…but I never asked what you liked. So…what would you get?

Waitress: Hehe, well…do you want soup or meat?

Man: Some soup I guess since it's cold.

Waitress: Ah…

Man: By the way, aren't you cold?

Waitress: Huh?

Man: The outfits you and the others wear here. I'm sure your legs are cold in those skirts.

Waitress: Hehe, yeah it is cold. But it is warm in the kitchen area.

Man: Ah, okay.

Waitress: So what kind of soup do you want?

Man: I…will…have…whatever is your favorite soup on the menu.

Waitress: Oh? Are you sure?

Man: I trust you.

Waitress: Hehe. I will be back with your drink.

Man: Thanks.

- She took my menu up and left. Of course I watched her walk away. Nothing else to do. With no one to talk to, I just had my thoughts running a mile a minute. Honestly, what am I doing here by myself? I never go eat anywhere by myself. With thoughts like these going through my head, I already knew why I was sitting here for dinner. I wanted to try asking her out or at least letting her know I was interested in her. She does know that I like to have fun with her. It's fun teasing her. And she has had her fun with me…messing around and playing a joke on me here and there. I would think that our growing banter means a little something more than that. I don't see her mess around with other customers like she does with me.

Waitress: Hello. Welcome. How many?

Customer: Five.

Waitress: Okay. Follow me.

- Funny…it seems like she's the one to greet me almost every time I come now at least whenever she can. If not she at least ends up being my waitress. Again I just think I'm thinking way too deep into this.

Waitress: Here you go.

- She sets my drink down in front of me in a long glass. I looked at the blue liquid for a bit just to examine it like I always do.

Waitress: It's not windex if that is what you are worried about, hehe.

- She watched on as I sat there looking at her with my eyebrow raised at her. She then points the straw at me and waits for me to drink it with a smile on her face.

Man: It better be good.

Waitress: Have I ever disappointed you?

Man: Ha, good point.

- I took a quick sip to get the taste of it. Then I took a second sip of the tasty drink she brought for me. She's right, never disappoints me.

Waitress: Did you enjoy it?

Man: Oh yeah. Good as always. Thanks.

Waitress: It is called "Ocean Dream."

Man: Oh.

Waitress: I am glad you like it. I will come back with your food when it is ready. But you can call on me if you need anything else.

Man: Thanks.

- She turns around and begins to walk off.

Man: Wait.

- She quickly turns around and takes the few steps back to me.

Waitress: Yes?

Man: You're pretty.

- She shyly covers her mouth with her hands.

Waitress: What?!

Man: That's all.

Waitress: Oh…

- Seems I caught her off guard. She's turning bright red. She lightly hits me with her notepad which she uses to take down orders.

Waitress: You…hehe. Don't say things like that. I feel really embarrassed right now…

Man: Sorry.

- She really has turned red.

Man: I've actually wanted to tell you that for a while, but I was a little shy on it. And now I see I've embarrassed you. So...sorry.

Waitress: No…it's okay. Thank you for the compliment. I just was not expecting that.

Man: Haha.

- I took another sip of my drink and noticed that she was still standing there covering her red face. She took a deep breath and then looked back at me.

Waitress: Hehe.

Man: Ha.

Waitress: …

Man: …shouldn't you be tending to other people now?

Waitress: Huh?

Man: You know, waitressing.

Waitress: Oh…OH! You're right! I will be back.

- And off she went. I swear I could see her trying to hold back a smile as she turned away. I've made her smile and giggle and laugh before, but never had I seen her like this; so surprised, so excited, so…red, ha. Hopefully I can use that awkward moment later as kind of a confidence booster on my side to open up a longer and meaningful dialogue. Not that I mind our little spurts of conversation we have every week. Those are fun. I can remember a few times that she would end up standing next to me looking like she's taking our table's order and we would just be talking for a bit. Nothing serious. Just idle chit-chat about how our days were and what we've been up to. One thing that I've gathered from our talks is that we both work a lot, her more than me. She's practically here every night at least the times I've come here. Here every Friday and sometimes a second or third time during the week because others would want to come and of course I'd want to come along.

- Minutes went by as I waited for my food. Things were beginning to die down. The influx of people coming in was less than those who were leaving. Guess that's good for me since she'd be less busy and we could chat a little to the side here and there…maybe. I was halfway through my drink without realizing it. Trying to think of ways to distract myself has…well, distracted me from knowing I was going through my drink so quickly. Of course I had to do something to keep for eyeing her. She's caught me a few times and then teases me about it. If I can I'll try to eat or drink as she goes by so it's not as obvious. I'm just glad she's not creeped out by it. She even said not to make it look so obvious one time, ha. Damn these wandering eyes.

Waitress: Here you go.

- A big steaming bowl of soup is laid in front of me. I inhaled it deeply as it seemed so familiar to me.

Man: Mm…

Waitress: It is actually something special I asked them to make. It is hot and sour soup with noodles.

Man: Hey, I like hot and sour soup.

Waitress: You do?

Man: Yeah. For lunch, my coworkers and I sometimes go to this Chinese place and I like getting their hot and sour soup. One of my friends hates it, ha.

Waitress: Oh. I hope you like how they have prepared the soup then.

- Again she waited for me to taste it. I scooped up a spoonful of it and brought it closer to my mouth.

Waitress: They just made so be careful. It's hot.

- …she said as a closed my mouth around it. She was right. I'm sure it was apparent of how hot it was as I finished the last half of my "Ocean Dream" in three seconds. As I held the cold glass along the side of my face, I slightly turn to her and was able to get the words out.

Man: …hot…it's hot…

Waitress: Oh…I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I should have told you it was hot when I set it down. I am so sorry.

Man: …it's okay. It tastes…good at least.

Waitress: Sorry…

Man: Seriously, it's okay…can I have another drink, please?

Waitress: Oh yes! Anything you want. What do you want?

Man: Anything is fine right now.

Waitress: Okay. I will get you something right away.

- She actually sprinted off. Never saw her or any of the girls here do that. She must really feel bad. It's not that I've never had my tongue burned before. Oh well…guess I better make her feel better. It's only hot soup. Not her fault either. Man, that stings…it feels…well, I can't really feel it that much at the moment. I started to stir the soup and noodles around waiting to get more feeling back in my tongue. Soon there after, she came out with a drink. I quickly took a sip of it and recognized it right away.

Waitress: Caramel mocha with tapioca. I wanted to make sure it would be something you like and I know you get this drink most of the time when you don't ask me to pick a drink for you.

- It sure feels good on my tongue right now. It might be the scorched tongue, but this is the best drink I have ever had. I was working my way down with this one quickly.

Waitress: Are you okay now?

Man: I am. Don't worry about it. It wasn't your fault or anything. They prepared it and I ate the hot soup without thinking about how hot it would be. You…just brought it out to me.

Waitress: ...

Man: Seriously, don't worry about it. It's okay.

Waitress: Are you sure?

Man: Yeah. See?

- I took a few sips from the drink she brought me. Can't believe she remembered the drink I usually get.

Man: All better.

Waitress: Okay. I am glad that you are better now.

Man: So am I.

Waitress: Well, enjoy your meal. I have to get back to work.

Man: Okay.

- I stirred the soup a little bit more before taking more in my spoon. I did hesitate a bit, but it wasn't as hot as before thankfully. Still a little hot. At least the drink can balance it out. I did always wonder if that's a good mix to have in the stomach though. All that hot and cold liquid getting mixed together down there...whatever. I'm just glad the soup is good and the drink is good. Not to mention that the service is great like always for me. They may not always be top notch, but they do their job well. I do recall one time I saw this one guy getting mad because he was waiting for maybe less than five minutes. The guy actually got up and tapped on one of the busy waitresses' shoulder and demanded some service. He was rude to that waitress the whole night and even left very abruptly after eating his meal while dragging his girlfriend with him. If they weren't busy I could understand him growing impatient, but they were pretty busy. My group waited even longer than he did and we didn't mind. They got to us eventually.

- The soup was good. It did take a while for me to finish most of it. I don't think I've ever finished a complete meal here before. They also serve each meal with sides...I never get to those. Could be that I'm just filling up on the eye candy here, ha.

Waitress: Everything okay?

- She asked as she came from another table.

Man: Yes, thanks.

Waitress: I'll be back.

- The place had really become less busy over the past few minutes. She has been able to come by more than usual and talk for a bit. The last time she did one of the other waitresses had to get her to stop talking to me so she could help out with customers. Ha, her reaction was cute. As I stared down at my bowl of soup I realized that my meal was almost over meaning that my time here was almost over. I have to act soon...at least do something. Oh, here she comes.

Waitress: Hey.

Man: Hey. It's not too busy now.

Waitress: Yeah. I am kind of relieved. We thought there would be a rush because of the holidays thinking that maybe tons of families might come in to eat.

Man: Yeah.

Waitress: Everyone is glad about that. Plus we are going to close an hour earlier than usual.

Man: Really?

- I checked my watch.

Man: That's pretty soon then.

Waitress: That's right. In fifteen minutes I have to kick you out, hehe.

Man: Ha, damn.

Waitress: Speaking of which, it is last call. Do you want a drink? I could make it to-go if you want.

Man: Mm...no, that's okay. If I spent anymore than I might not have anymore money to put for your tip.

- She lightly hits me on the shoulder with her notepad.

Waitress: You need to stop that.

Man: Stop what?

Waitress: Giving me big tips. You spend ten dollars for a meal and give me ten dollars as a tip. And I know you only do it for me because I remember giving your table to another girl here saying that she would get a big tip from you, but it did not happen. And then the next time you come and I serve you I get a big tip. Either you are rich or you are trying to impress me.

- I grinned.

Man: Well, is it working?

Waitress: Is what working?

Man: Me trying to impress you.

- She gasps.

Waitress: I knew it!

- She hits me again with the notepad. That one was a little harder than usual.

Waitress: Don't do that! Just for that, you better not leave a tip this time. If you leave any change, I am going to make sure you take it out of here with you.

Man: Then I'll just pay with credit card and write your tip down.

Waitress: The I'll just cross it out.

Man: Ha. Guess I can't win this time.

Waitress: Not this time, hehe.

- Even though she kind of raised her voice at me, she did it with a smile. Maybe I'm getting through to her.

Man: Hey...umm...

Waitress: Did you want that drink?

Man: No. No drink. I was, uh, wondering I could...

Hostess: Hey.

Waitress: Yes?

Hostess: Talking to him again? You are going to be in so much trouble.

Waitress: I am?

Hostess: No, just kidding. But we do need your help back here. We're trying to close up as soon as possible since there are only a few customers left. We have most of the main things done in the back already so we just need to clean up and collect. Okay?

Waitress: Okay.

- The hostess leaves.

Waitress: Sorry. I will be back with your bill.

Man: Yeah...thanks.

- I think I gave the biggest sigh as she walked away from me. So close. When she brings the bill that will be my chance. One last chance tonight. I have to do it tonight. Another waitress came by just as I finished my soup. She took up the dishes and went to the back. I looked around as I sipped on my drink. Other than myself there were only three other tables still eating and talking. As I waited I started to calculate my tab. It would've been roughly around fifteen dollars. I think she'll be mad if I left any tip at all tonight, ha. Just then a sudden burst of people came through the door followed by a loud cheer.

Crowd: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

- I, as well as the other customers, turned to see what was going on. No way. It's her birthday today? Wow. What is she doing here working on her birthday? Hey, maybe I could use this as an easy ice breaker when she brings me the bill. The waitresses and cooks had gathered around with her friends to celebrate. They sang "Happy Birthday" to her and the rest of us joined in. She looks so embarrassed, ha. Then I saw one of her friends hold out his arms. She jumped in and gave the biggest hug to him followed by...mm, well...I guess he's more than just a friend. Ha...

Man: ...
