HeeJin I - Dinner

HeeJin: Where is she? I swear that girl takes longer to get ready each day.

- HeeJin paces around in front of a mirror close to the front door. She checks her earrings in the mirror before screaming out.

HeeJin: Mai! Let’s go! We’re going to be late!
Mai: Okay!

- HeeJin grabs her purse. She digs around for her car keys. She pulls them out just as Mai comes down the stairs and joins her in front of the mirror.

HeeJin: You had all that time to check yourself upstairs.
Mai: Yeah, okay. I’m here now.
HeeJin: Yes. Let’s go. I hate being late.

- HeeJin heads out the door. Mai continues to check herself out in the mirror. She wafts her hair from one side and then the other.

HeeJin: Let’s go, Mai!
Mai: I’m coming, mom!

- In the car…

Mai: So who’s going to be at this dinner?
HeeJin: The usual; your Aunt EiJi, my friend Hyori and her friend Yuri, EunHye and MiYoun. Are we still picking up your friend?
Mai: Of course. Boa always wants to go out.
HeeJin: Okay. Just remind me where to turn to get to her house.
Mai: It’s always fun going out with you and your friends. I hope that us little girls don’t bring it down any.
HeeJin: I wouldn’t have asked you to come if I didn’t want you there.
Mai: Gee, thanks, mom, haha.
HeeJin: You girls are both 17. You can have fun with us or go do your own thing. Having you two around does make the rest of us feel younger at times when we go out.
Mai: But you don’t ask us to go out with you all the time.
HeeJin: Because mommy likes to enjoy certain things without her daughter around to make it awkward.
Mai: Completely understand. That statement works in vice versa terms, okay?
HeeJin: Oh yeah. You know it.
Mai: Turn here, please.

- HeeJin makes the turn. Mai takes out a makeup mirror, turns on one of the car lights, and checks her makeup.

HeeJin: That’s not good for my driving.
Mai: I’ll turn it off.
HeeJin: How many times do you have to check how you look, sweetie? You look fine.
Mai: Just making sure.
HeeJin: Don’t be vain. I didn’t raise you to be all into your looks.
Mai: I’m not. I just want to look as good as possible. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good, is there?
HeeJin: No. Just don’t go overboard.
Mai: Turn to your right.
HeeJin: Huh? Sweetie, you don’t need me to check out your makeup.
Mai: Turn THE CAR right. Turn at the coming stoplight.
HeeJin: Oh. OH!

- She turns.

-…-

- Arriving in the restaurant, HeeJin, Mai, and Boa look around for their group of friends. They find the group who waves to the three at the door. They join them at the dinner table.

Hyori: Hey. It’s about time.
MiYoun: Yes. Can I PLEASE order something now?
Hyori: Yeah, go ahead.
MiYoun: THANK YOU!

- MiYoun turns to the waiter nearby and starts ordering from the menu. The two young girls giggle as they take their seats.

EiJi: She’s been…hungry to say the least.
HeeJin: That’s interesting. I don’t see where all that food goes, hehe.
Mai: You’re one to talk, mom. You’re so skinny I don’t see how I came out to be a healthy baby at all, hehe.

- The others laugh.

HeeJin: Does that mean I’m not paying for your meal?
Boa: Not if it means you’re not paying for my meal also. Mai, you better be quiet.
Mai: Mom won’t let me starve.
HeeJin: I could.

- EunHye and Hyori order.

Mai: Aunt EiJi wouldn’t though.
EiJi: That’s true.
HeeJin: No wonder my daughter is spoiled, hehe.
EiJi: Just being the nice and cool aunt of the family. At least I’m around unlike your other aunt.
Hyori: Oh…here we go.
Mai: Ah…
HeeJin: We don’t have to bring this up again, do we?
EiJi: No…sorry. Don’t know what I’m saying at times.

- EiJi orders. Mai looks around.

Mai: Where’s Yuri?
Hyori: A work thing came up.
Boa: She’s always busy.
HeeJin: What is it this time?
EunHye: Some editing needed to be done. I don’t know how, but they lost some of the footage they recorded of her earlier. They still had my scenes, but somehow lost hers. It’s weird.
EiJi: Why does she have to redo her scenes now?
EunHye: Night scenes.
Hyori: She said she would come by if she has time.
EunHye: IF she has time. I seriously doubt it.
EiJi: We’re all pretty busy nowadays.
Waiter: Ma’am?
Mai: Is it okay for me to order, mom?
HeeJin: I guess.
Mai: Thanks.

- Mai and Boa order.

EunHye: How is work for you, HeeJin?
HeeJin: Mm…can’t complain. Work is work, simple as that. Make this, make that, design this, design that…same thing everyday…
EiJi: Getting boring?
HeeJin: Yeah…but it pays the bills.
MiYoun: That doesn’t sound like you.
HeeJin: Mm?
MiYoun: You used to look for new things to do all the time. If you got bored with something, you would do something else. It’s been that way with your last few jobs. You reached the top of the chain at work and then stayed there until it got boring.
EunHye: She has a point.
HeeJin: Well, there’s nothing else I’m interested in right now. I’m comfortable doing what I’m doing and I don’t have any huge future plans happening soon…so…yeah.

- HeeJin orders something.

Mai: I like mom’s current job.
Boa: Same here. I wouldn’t mind being in fashion. It’s such a creative outlet.
EiJi: She is a creative one.
Hyori: I bet she’s wearing something she made herself right now.

- They all look to HeeJin’s blue dress.

HeeJin: She’s wearing one of my designs also AND so is Boa.

- She points to Boa in her black leather jacket ensemble and Mai in her light blue long sleeve blouse. HeeJin then points to MiYoun’s black one-sleeved top.

HeeJin: You’ll see my name on MiYoun’s tag also.
MiYoun: Hehe. Forgot about that. Sorry, it’s really nice and I really like it.
Boa: You make great outfits.
HeeJin: Thank you, but don’t think giving me compliments will supply you with more free clothes.

- They laugh.

Boa: That’s okay. It does make your Christmas presents and birthday presents predictable, but very much appreciated. I still have the sweater you made for me when I was 8 years old.
EiJi: I doubt you still fit into that. You’ve grown up to be a gorgeous young woman.

- Boa blushes and covers her smile.

Boa: Thank you very much.
EiJi: Speaking of Christmas and birthdays, both of you girls have your birthdays coming soon, right?
Mai + Boa: Yes!
Mai: Mine is first. The 28th of December…
Boa: Then mine is on the 30th…
Mai: We’re going to celebrate both on the 29th…
Boa: Just like every year…
Mai: And this year…
Boa: It’s extra special because…
Mai + Boa: We’re both turning 18!

- They giggle with each other.

EunHye: Sounds really fun. You two girls must be really happy to have each other as friends to do all these things together with.

- They give a friendly embrace to each other as the waiter starts bringing in the food.

MiYoun: I said bring mine out first.
Waiter: Oh, I’m sorry.
MiYoun: So…hungry…
Hyori: Relax, MiYoun. We’ll all get to eat.
MiYoun: Yes…just not NOW though, hehe.
EiJi: So December must be hectic for you HeeJin.
HeeJin: Oh, it is. That’s why I’m glad it’s still November.
Mai: I’m not.
Boa: Me either
HeeJin: It gives me SOME time to relax before Christmas, the girls’ birthdays, and New Year’s. I’m just glad that these two have classes till the middle of December so they have something to keep themselves busy with.
Boa: Stupid school.
Mai: At least we’re seniors.
HeeJin: And since they’re seniors, I have to pester them, especially my Mai, about college.
Mai: It’s nonstop.
EunHye: What about you, Boa? Are your parents pushing for you to go to college next fall?
Boa: They are. They want me to go and I do want to go. They’ll support me with the tuition and fees…but…
Mai: There’s a “but” to this?
Boa: …sorry, I’d rather not talk about it right now…
EiJi: It’s okay, Boa. We’re here to have fun, eat, and chat. No worries tonight, ladies. Right?
Ladies: Right!

- The waiter brings out the rest of the food and starts to pass it around.

MiYoun: Finally.

- MiYoun dives into her meal as soon as the waiter sets it down on the table. Everyone starts to eat as their meals are brought to them.

-…-

- After eating…

MiYoun: Time for dessert.

- She picks up the dessert menu and starts to look for something.

Mai: Is it okay if I order a dessert, mom?
HeeJin: Sure. How about you, Boa?
Boa: That’s okay. I’m stuffed.
Hyori: Excuse me, ladies.

- Hyori gets up and goes to the bathroom. EunHye goes with her.

Mai: Mm…I should go and check my makeup. Don’t know if all the eating messed it up. How do I look, mom?

- HeeJin holds Mai’s chin and checks her face.

HeeJin: You look fine.
Mai: “Fine?” That’s it?

- She stands.

Mai: I’m going to check. Could you order me just a slice of chocolate cake, mom? Thanks. C’mon, Boa.

- She grabs Boa’s hand and takes her along. EiJi moves a seat closer as MiYoun tells the waiter what she wants.

EiJi: How are you holding up, dear sister?
HeeJin: Same as always.

- She gives EiJi a smile.

EiJi: Mm-hmm. Mai is a lot to handle, isn’t she?
HeeJin: Especially throughout high school. But things are going well for us.
EiJi: What about you?
Waiter: Did any of you ladies want any dessert?
EiJi: Nothing for me.
HeeJin: Umm…a piece of chocolate cake for my daughter, please.
Waiter: You have a daughter?

- HeeJin raises her eyebrow and gives a confused look to the waiter.

Waiter: Oh, I don’t mean anything by it. It’s just that you seem so young to have a daughter.
HeeJin: I’ll take that as a compliment then.
Waiter: Is it the one with the long dark hair in the light blue?
HeeJin: That’s her.
Waiter: Ah…she’s a cute one.
HeeJin: …are you interested?
Waiter: Umm…no-no-no. Just complimenting…uh…yeah…complimenting…
MiYoun: Psst.

- MiYoun has moved closer to EiJi and HeeJin.

MiYoun: If you need an excuse to leave you can just get our desserts.
Waiter: Huh? Oh! Thank you. That I will do. Excuse me.

- The ladies giggle.

MiYoun: Like mother like daughter. I guess she’s fighting off the guys like you used to.
HeeJin: Used to?

- They laugh again.

EiJi: So…does that mean that there’s “someone?”
HeeJin: No, it doesn’t. Doesn’t mean I haven’t been approached, but it kind of gets old after a while. Plus it has been a bunch of younger fellows coming my way.
EiJi: Nothing wrong with a younger man. I’ve had a few, haha.
MiYoun: My boyfriend right now is a year younger than me.
HeeJin: No, I mean YOUNG like our post-adolescent waiter over there. Although saying that I have a daughter does scare the young ones off…or send them to my daughter…ugh…

- She drinks her wine.

MiYoun: Are you browsing your options though?
HeeJin: Nope. Don’t see a point to. I have my life to worry about, I have a daughter who is college bound to take care of, and I really don’t see myself having time for someone right now. That’s not a bad thing.
EiJi: I suppose. I haven’t had a boyfriend for a good nine months and I haven’t felt this good in a long time.

- EunHye comes back and joins the others. The waiter also comes back with the desserts

EunHye: Oh, can you please get me another soda please.
Waiter: Sure thing.

- MiYoun takes her dessert and starts to eat.

EunHye: So, what are we talking about here?
EiJi: Guys, of course, haha.
EunHye: Ah…they’re great, aren’t they? So many cute ones out there.
HeeJin: Are you currently seeing anyone?
EunHye: No, I’m not. There is this one guy at the station who I think likes me. He’s been extra friendly lately. He’s cute, but he’s just a bit old for me.
HeeJin: How much older?
EunHye: At least ten years older.
Ladies: Whoa!
Hyori: You talking about our station manager?

- Hyori returns.

EunHye: Yeah…
Hyori: It’s a bit creepy, isn’t it?
EunHye: A bit? Very! Why do you think I have been trying to do more of the on-the-scene assignments?
Hyori: I’ll see what I can do about the schedules.
EunHye: THANK YOU!
Hyori: You’re welcome. By the way, those two girls…they pretty much own that bathroom.

- They laugh.

HeeJin: That’s my girl.
Hyori: So what brings up the guy talk?
EiJi: Just another subject.
MiYoun: How is it on your end, Hyori?
Hyori: Me? Still with the same guy I’ve been with for five years.
HeeJin: Of course.
EiJi: Five years? That’s a long time.

- She takes Hyori’s hand and inspects it.

EiJi: Still no ring.

- Hyori pulls her hand away and smirks.

Hyori: I’m not pressuring him into a marriage. If he’s not ready then that’s fine.
HeeJin: But you want to get married.
Hyori: Oh yeah. But like I said, if he’s not ready then I don’t want to start a married life on unsure grounds.
MiYoun: He could at least propose. Then you’ll be engaged and then you he can have all the time to get ready.
EunHye: Plus make sure it’s a big engagement ring.

- The ladies laugh.

EiJi: One of us has to get married first and it’s bound to happen sooner or later.
MiYoun: Hyori’s the closest right now.
Hyori: But I always wasn’t the closest.

- They turn to HeeJin.

HeeJin: Mm-hmm…
EiJi: Do you not want to..?
HeeJin: Don’t want to.
MiYoun: Guess that means no follow up questions about it either.
HeeJin: That would be correct.

- HeeJin looks toward the bathroom doors.

EunHye: Any plans after this?
EiJi: What time is it…10:51. Do you feel like doing anything?
Hyori: I’m always up for something. Just have to call my boy and tell him I’ll be out with my girls tonight a little longer.
MiYoun: Feel like karaoke?
EiJi: Haven’t done that in a while. Sounds good to me.
Hyori: Okay. Let me go call my honey. If you’ll excuse me…

- Hyori takes her phone and steps away from the others.

HeeJin: I think I’ll pass on karaoke.
EunHye: Aww…
MiYoun: You should come. You’re a great singer.
HeeJin: Okay…where would we be going?
MiYoun: Where we always go, The Room.
HeeJin: Well, I have two 17 year olds that I need to send home first then.
EiJi: I’m sure we can get them in. They’re girls. They always let girls in.
HeeJin: One of them isn’t my daughter though. I’m sure her parents might not me just taking her to certain hangouts all the time with us.
EiJi: Take them home and come join us then.
HeeJin: Maybe…

- The girls come back from the bathroom.

EunHye: You two done yet?
Boa: Yes, we are.
Mai: Looking as pretty as ever.

- They pose.

HeeJin: You look good enough to go.
Mai + Boa: We’re leaving?
HeeJin: You know your parents don’t like you staying out late all the time, Boa.
Boa: Yeah…you’re right…

- The waiter comes by with the check.

HeeJin: Could you put this cake in a box?
Waiter: Sure thing.
HeeJin: And could you put another slice for her friend, too.
Waiter: No problem.
HeeJin: Thanks.
Boa: Thank you.

- The waiter leaves. HeeJin gets up and puts her coat on. She then reaches in her purse and puts some money on the table.

HeeJin: It was nice to see all of you. We’ll have to do it again sometime soon.
Mai: Bye, everyone.
Boa: Have a nice night.
Ladies: Bye.
Hyori: We’ll see you at The Room later, HeeJin.
Mai + Boa: You’re going to The Room?

- HeeJin turns to Hyori and gives a glare. Hyori hides her face.

Boa: Can we go?
Mai: The Room is so fun.
Boa: Please, can we go? I’ll call my mom and let her know.
Mai: Let us go. Please, please, please, mom?
HeeJin: No! Not tonight, girls.
Boa: …
Mai: Mom…
HeeJin: Mai, don’t.
Mai: …sorry…

- The waiter brings their dessert. Mai takes it.

HeeJin: Thank you. C’mon, girls. Let’s go.
