U.S. Congress Designates Korean American Day

The United States Congress has designated January 13 as “Korean American Day” to celebrate contributions made by Korean-Americans to the United States.

The U.S. Congress recently passed its resolution to officially designate Korean American Day which falls on January 13. A group of Korean immigrants arrived in the U.S. for the first time on Jan. 13, 1903, according to the Korean American Foundation.

The Korean American Foundation also stated that the Korean immigrants first arrived in Honolulu on January 13, 1903 and have made a contribution to the growth and development of American society through their great efforts.

“It is the first time that the U.S. congress has officially designated a day to recognize contributions to the country by a specific ethnic community,” a source from the Korean American Foundation explained.

“The official designation of Korean American Day by the U.S. Congress is a significant milestone in the history of the Korean immigration to America.”

The source continued, “The Korean American Foundation will make efforts to hold a variety of ceremonies and events to celebrate Korean American Day across the U.S. in the near future,” adding that the official designation of the day will make Korean-Americans, who were born in the U.S., more proud of themselves than any other commemoration day for Korean society in the country.

It took the foundation three years to receive the approval of Korean American Day from the U.S. Congress after the day was approved by Los Angeles City Council and California State Congress in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

The foundation plans to hold a ceremony to celebrate the passing of Korean American Day in the U.S. congress February next year and to invite U.S. senators and representatives, who made their endeavors for the passing, to the celebration ceremony.

The foundation also plans on promulgating the importance and meaning of the designated Korean American Day to the mainstream of American society as well as Korean community in the U.S., by holding a series of events to commemorate the day. Such activities as the design of calendars featuring essays or pictures by Korean American students are under consideration.

Thanks, Angelo.
I wish it had been the 12th, or 14th!!
I think I read somewhere, they first arrived in San Francisco. (While "Little Korea" is in LA!)
They certainly deserve this!!!
(hopefully they will make this a "moble holiday" like Thanksgiving, or "President's Day", so it never falls on Friday the 13th.)
(odd little note: The number "4" is considered bad, in most of Asia. You can NOT buy two pairs of chopsticks there.)
