Girl Has Seizure After 5 Hours Of Video Gaming Doctor Says Long-Term Video Game Playing Is Likely Cause POSTED: 10:34 am EST December 9, 2005 DES MOINES, Iowa -- A central Iowa mother woke up over the weekend to find her daughter having a seizure. After a trip to the emergency room, a family learned that the cause was most likely from playing video games too long, Des Moines television station KCCI reported. Doctors said such incidents are not common, but they do happen. Certain people are prone to it because of the way their brains work. Once was enough for 14-year-old Amy Kopaska. She loves to play video games, the station reported. She spent five hours straight playing a video game over the weekend. Her marathon session led to a frightening situation. Click here to find out more! "This has never happened before. Boy, it scared the life out of me," said Janell Hansen, Kopaska's mother. Hansen woke up early Sunday and heard an awful noise from her daughter's room. She found her daughter thrashing on her bed. "I rolled her over. Her eyes were dilated. She was foaming at the mouth, gasping for air. Just breathing very hard," Hansen said. Hansen said that at one point it appeared her daughter had quit breathing all together. "Then it was quiet. She didn't move. I thought I was watching her die. It scared me terribly," Hansen said. Hansen gave Kopaska a couple of big breaths as she waited for the paramedics. At the hospital, after several tests and questions, the conclusion was that the long-term use of the video game induced the seizure. "The pattern of the lights sets up an abnormal reaction in the brain, and that causes the seizure to happen," said Dr. Joel Waymire, a pediatrician. Kopaska doesn't remember anything about the seizure. "My mind is a blank, like dreaming without the dream," she said. Kopaska was playing the game called "True Crime: New York City." There's a car driving through snow and the snowflakes act as a strobe light. Kopaska's brother played, too, but he took a break when it was her turn. She stayed and watched him play. Kopaska now only plays one to two hours at a time and then takes a break. //Seoul |

So is the conclusion that ANYONE could get a seizure from playing a video game? That's a scary implication. |

wow, first time i've ever heard about this - a seizure as a result of too many hours playing video games? that's just odd, but i'm guessing it's very possible given the evidence here =] i guess i won't be playing too much games from now on =P |

yes, that's true. but there are a lot of different things which might cause a seizure (not only games) and there are a lot of different types of seizure! back to video games: monitors can cause a seizure with a very fast change between bright/dark or different color combinations. this is called "photosensitivity". if there are only a few bright/dark/color changes in a second than it shouldn't be a problem. people who didn't came down with seizure before might especially suffer a seizure in their adolescence because of such a "photosensitivity". so young kids should be very carefully when playing games and read the warnings written in all manuals as games often contain sudden brightness/color changes! btw. in the year 1997 in japan, the tv-show "pocket monsters" had to many bright/dark/color changes in a special scene and caused 600 seizures by kids who never had a seizure before. over 200 of the kids had to stay a night in hospital. but maybe dogs are immune against seizures? |

True Crime: New York City did this... I'm wondering what will happen if she plays Hello Kitty Roller Rescue for 5 hours straight... I am guessing she won't have a siezure but she'll probably be dead before it. lol |

Since I'm not a big fan of video games, it won't happen ^___^ (I'm just really bad at VG so I don't play much..) But since seizures can come randomly too, it's pretty scary. Like my brother's pastor had a random seizure right before their summer retreat, and all of them got really scared. The reason was unknown, but later they found out that he had some problem with his brain or something like that. Pretty freaky stuff man.. |

i remember that.... "pocket monsters" became "pokemon" here in the states, and in fact gave it alot of publicity (i still have 2 japanese pocket monster cards my lil cuz gave me) it was cuz of the quickly flashing lights, like fast strobe lights, in one of the action sequences |
