Do you think no director should remade a movie? Do you think that by remaking a classic it'll somehow ruin your childhood? Do you think classics should remain classics and not remade in this 21st century? Movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, War of the Worlds, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Bad News Bears, The Longest Yard, The Time Machine (With Guy Pierce), and The Amitiville Horror (2005 release) among others have been remade for this era. Now, i've never seen the originals of all of the movies i mentioned and with some i guess they're gonna better than their remade counterparts. But, in some cases remakes are better than the orginal. For example, The Amitiville Horror, like i said, i've never seen the original, but i hardly believe is better than the recently released one soly because the new one has special effects and of course the picture quality is 10x better. I'm honestly all for remaking old movies because i have hard time trying to relate to the way movies looked in the 1970s and that's cause i'm not from those times. Therefore, remaking movies is actually a positive thing because it gets young people whom otherwise wouldn't be interested, actually interested. So, what's your take on this? |

remakes may ruin feelings you once had for a movie or even a song (covers). for example i loved the danish movie "Nattevagten" directed by Ole Bornedal. three years later (1997) he did a "hollywoodified" remake of this film called "Nightwatch" in the us version. i can't say why, but the style of the first one was miles better. such moods often depend on the cultural background. in this case the danish version was kinda nordish european style, while the us version lost all the humor and even scenes were left out. but maybe a us american would prefer the newer version. i am sure we (europeans/us americans) all have a different sense of humor, feelings, ..., all based on our cultural background. that might be the same thing, when making a remake after a couple of years (20-30). the culture changes alway a little bit. so younger people may love the remake why the older ones would "hate" it. 50/50, i'd say Edwin ;) i prefer seeing the original ones. i love the way the movies looked in former days. of course sometimes it even happens that i can't fell in "love" with these different style *g* |

got mixed feelings about remakes... the re-imagining of a directors vision can often lead to an inferior movie...when compared to the original version...but if you take the movie itself it might not be bad...and if you had a connection to the original that might affect your perception of the remake too. one remake i am looking forward to is KING KONG...but i am going into it knowing that the original King Kong (black-n-white, 1933) is one of my all time favorite movies...even tho i may really like the remake, it will never compare to the original classic to me, but kids who are watching Kong for the 1st time are gonna be amazed ^_^. remakes that i don't like are when american directors try to remake asian horror movies. like the ring (ringu), and grudge (ju-on). i just couldnt get "into" them. the asian originals seem superior to me. but that is only my opinion. and lets not forget the american GODZILLA....cool movie..but that was NOT Godzilla. (would be cool to see him fight king kong again) some remakes turn out better, like MIRACLE ON 34th St. some don't, like any version of the scrooge story done AFTER Alistair Sim's version (not including Mr. Magoo's version) |

Here's the method that I find works well. Movies 1. Watch the remake first. 2. Then watch the classic and you appreciate why it's a classic. And if the original wasn't that good anyways, throw it back to the library. 3. Then read the book. Since you know the plot you'll speed read it pretty quickly and pause at the places where there are differences and go hey. This works well on hard to read books like Dune and Lord of the Rings. Or if you're catching up with Harry Potter and Narnia (coming soon!). If the remake has bad reviews, skip it and just watch the classic. Wait for the remake to show up on video. It's not like you'll miss an important plot point, and if you do, you'll see tons of spoilers on the Internet anyways. Special/Unrated Editions: 1. First watch it the way it was intended in the theater. 2. Watch with bonus scenes until it gets too distracting. Animes/Manga 1. Watch the anime first. 2. Read the manga. 3. Read lots of manga because the anime ended. |

Angus, i so agree with you on rules # 1, 2, and 3 for movies, but i wouldn't lead myself out of the chance of watching a movie just because it got bad reviews. For example, Kingdom of Heaven got a "pass" (out of "rent" or "buy") from Chris Gore and i couldn't have disagree with him more. Also, movie critis mopped the floor with Ben and Jen's Gigli and i liked it. So, yeah, don't always believe everything you hear. As for the manga, i also agree. |

Oh, by reviews, I meant from friends and family. The movie critics don't add much value in picking a movie unless they think like us. |

Some remakes are better than the original, but in some sense you can never outbeat the originals. The Longest Yard was awesome, if I could add. |

How come your answers are always so true and definitive, lady Twitty? heh :) Anyway, i agree. I just think some people are closed minded and they make up their minds about something without given them a try so even if you do give it a try, it will never amount to the first experience. |

Yeah, people who can't bear subtitles suck! (Now if any of you guys do, we cool, it's the people outside of AMR that sucks lol). As for not watching it cause it's Widescreen...i used to be one of those people...but lately i've started liking widescreen even more than fullscreen. heh |

I love captions! I even put it on regular English programs, because you never know when some family member like :doggy: will bark and you'd miss what somone on TV is saying or mumbling. Sometimes there are even spoilers in the captions, especially the "[spoiler person's name]: Muahahahaha" ones. Also good at night when you don't want your TV to make noise. |

I missed ya too, Lu. And i've been fine, i can live without ma girl... lol i'm just playing. :) I\m fine for real. As for your other question, in every post, on right hand corner, you see two options, once says "report" while the other says "quote", just click on "quote" and you're set. :) And, guys, i too put captions on TV because of the very same reason! lol |
