Crying Nut Sings of Independence
2005-04-14

Crying Nut, a five-member punk rock band known for hits like “Maldalija” and “Pilsal Offside,’” have been invited by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to perform and record songs of Korea’s independence movement, said Drug Records, the group’s management company, through a news release April 12th.
“There’s a limit to getting people to listen to independence movement songs from so many decades ago. There’s a need to find ways to communicate the meaning of the songs to younger generations,” a ministry official was quoted as saying in the news release.
Crying Nut performed two tracks – “Martial Song of Independence (Tokrip Kunga)” and “The Aprok River March (Aprokgang Haengjingok)” - at a ceremony held April 13th by the ministry at the Kim Koo Museum and Library in Hyochang-dong, Seoul. The ceremony was to commemorate the establishment of a provisional Korean government in Shanghai on April 13, 1919, during the Japanese colonial period.
It was the first time for a rock band to take part in an official ceremony for a national event, according to Drug Records.
The group will also record the songs as part of a 14-track album of independence movement songs, due out in July. The album will include songs by other rock and pop groups, as well as traditional musicians.#AMR#

comment: This made KBS World's "KPOP INteractive" tonight. I'm not quite sure what to make of it.
