Posted Image Korean Cars Join the Ranks of Globally Recognized Autos 2005-02-15 The 2005 Chicago Auto Show, billed as the largest annual auto show in the United States, opened in Chicago’s McCormick Place on Saturday. A total of 44 automakers from around the world, including South Korea’s Hyundai and Kia, are now displaying more than 1,000 cars, including 28 new models and 23 concept cars. Chicago Auto Show The Chicago Auto Show, usually held between early and mid-February, is the second of the year’s mammoth U.S. auto shows, following the Detroit Motor Show in January. The annual Chicago Auto Show, organized by the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA), is a commercial promotional event for ordinary consumers. The 2005 Chicago Auto Show is the 97th edition. It is the oldest commercial auto show in the United States. Chicago Auto Show and Korean Cars Hyundai and Kia motor companies have unveiled their new models and concept cars at the show. The two automakers are also displaying more than 20 existing models, promoting their brand names. 2004 was the best year on record for the Korean automobile industry. Annual exports topped $30 billion with the average export price standing at around $10,000 per car. The Korean automakers are expected to continue their growth momentum through the ongoing Chicago Auto Show. Korea’s Car Exports—History of Tireless Growth Korea’s automobile history can be traced back to 1903 when King Gojong purchased a four-cylinder Cadillac. Some 50 years later in 1955, Korea produced its first-ever homegrown automobile. 2005 thus marks the 50th anniversary of Korea’s automobile production. Since 1996, exports have been the major development engine of local automakers. Chronology of Korea’s Automobile Industry 1903 First car in Korea (King Gojong/4-cylinder Cadillac) 1955 Shinjin Industrial Co., produces first locally-made car (“Sibal”) 1975 Hyundai Motor Co. produces its first auto model (“Pony”) 1976 Hyundai Motor co. exports “Pony” models (to Ecuador) 1982-1985 Stage of “preparation for industrial growth”—focusing on small domestic market 1986-1988 Stage of “full-fledged mass production”—expansion of exports 1987-1996 Stage of “dissemination”—expansion of domestic market and rapid growth of exports 1997- Stage of ‘industrial restructuring”—rapid increase in the ratio of exports Trends of Korea’s Automobile Exports 1980: $100 million → 1986: $ 1 billion → 1993: $5 billion → 1996: $10 billion → 2003: $20 billion → 2004: $30 billion ($31.8 billion) From Cheap Cars to Quality Autos In the early stage of automobile exports, Korean automakers had to emphasize their price competitiveness. However, they are now competing on the basis of quality rather than price. Korean automakers are striving to join the ranks of the world’s premier brand car makers. Trends of Korea’s Export Price per Car 1998: $6,355 → 2000: $7,386 → Jan.-Nov., 2004: $9,935 → End of 2004: $10,000 Strong sales of SUVs and other high-value added models in overseas markets have contributed to the increase in the nation’s average export price per car. International Recognition of Quality in 2004 Hyundai’s Sonata model received the 2004 Initial Quality Study (IQS) Award from J.D. Power (a leading U.S. automobile quality surveyor) Kia’s Sorento model received the Best SUV Value Award from the Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) |
