Posted Image FM Reiterates Seoul's Commitment to Nuclear-free Peninsula 2005-02-14 10:30:34 Updated. Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon says that South Korea will stick to its principle of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. Ban made the remarks during an interview on CNN on Sunday when asked if South Korea would go nuclear if North Korea was found to have nuclear weapons. Ban said Seoul remains committed to the joint declaration for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula adopted by South and North Korea in 1992. Ban said that Pyongyang is believed to have one or two nuclear weapons, quickly adding that it is too early to project whether the Stalinist state would actually use nuclear arms. He stressed that intelligence on the North's nuclear capability is still under close analysis, underlining the need to thoroughly assess the matter. Ban also expressed confidence that the United States could adequately defend the South while simultaneously prosecuting the insurgency in Iraq, saying that Washington and Seoul, through close combined defense capabilities, would be able to deal with any threats.#AMR# //Seoul comment: I dunno guys. This could get really ugly, really quickly... |
