My Mother

Part 1 - A Family’s Affairs

Life always seems perfect for young children. They run here and there, bright smiles on their faces that light up the darkest of nights. It’s like nothing bleak or horrible can ever touch them. They’re too pure and full of joy to let anything bother them.

That’s what Ahn Yoomi thought as she watched her little brother racing through the yard toward her, his arms wide open. She picked him up as he jumped into her tight embrace, laughing all the while. Stroking his soft black hair, she thanked God that she had such a wonderful sibling.

“Yoomi, I want down!” he demanded, kicking his legs in protest to her loving hug.

“Oh, fine, Seung Ho! You just don’t love me, do you?” She let him drop to his feet and folded her arms, pretending to be very upset.

He tugged on her shirt and said, “No, big sister! I love you! I just wanna play! Do you wanna play with me? Let’s go play! Come on, Yoomi!”

She couldn’t hide her smile as she followed him through the green fields of their back yard. This was her paradise. Nothing could come between her and this happiness as long as Seung Ho was there.

Their mother watched her children scamper about in the back yard and smiled. It was her dream as a mother to have her children love each other so much. The only thing that could make the moment perfect was…

Ahn Jung Ho stepped through the front door and took off his shoes. “Hui? Where are you?”

“In the den!” she called back, never taking her eyes from the children.

Her husband wrapped his arms around her and whispered sweet-nothings in her ear as he, too, watched the two outside playing.

Life was perfect. There was nothing that could tear the family apart. Nothing whatsoever.

---

Seung Ho waited by the window as he did every weekday afternoon, waiting for his father’s car to come into view. It seemed like such a long time that he’d been sitting there, but he never moved. Night soon fell, and his mother called him away from his perch to the table. Reluctantly, he obeyed and sat across from his big sister. “Momma, where’s Daddy?” he asked innocently.

Her brows twitched slightly at the question, and her voice seemed slightly strained as she answered, “I don’t know. I think he is probably working late.”

“But he never worked late before.”

“I know, sweetie, but sometimes things take a long time to do.” She placed his bowl of rice in front of him and smiled weakly, trying her best to mask her fear.

“Mom, I’m sure he’ll be coming home soon,” Yoomi said to encourage her mother, though she felt very scared that something had happened.

“Yes,” she nodded, handing her daughter her bowl of rice. “He probably just hasn’t gotten a chance to call. They’re probably working him to the bone, the poor dear. I’m sure he’ll be home any minute.”

But Ahn Jung Ho did not come home for dinner, nor was he home to put Seung Ho to bed.

“No, I want Daddy!” he yelled at his mother, kicking his covers off. “I want Daddy!”

“Seung Ho, your father isn’t home! He can’t come!”

“Where’s Daddy? I want Daddy!”

Hui sighed heavily and rubbed her brow. “Seung Ho, please be a good boy for Mommy and go to sleep. If you do, I’ll take you to get ice cream tomorrow!”

He stared at his mother and scrunched his face with worry. “What’s wrong, Momma? What happened? Something’s happened to Daddy, hasn’t it?”

“Don’t say that!” she spat, smacking his hand. “Never speak that way of anyone! You’re father’s just working late! Now get to bed!”

Staring fearfully at his mother, he crawled under the covers and waited for her to leave. As she closed the door, he burst into tears. It was a long time before he cried himself to sleep.

Yoomi sat in her room, tossing a stuffed Mashi Maro in the air as she waited for her father. She knew that he wasn’t working late. The company he worked for would’ve sent him home rather than pay overtime. At least, that’s what she heard her parents say when they were discussing how to get more money for school. Something was definitely going on, and she was going to find out what.

Around 11 PM, headlights flooded her room, and she dashed to her door and pressed her ear against it. The sound of the front door opening and closing was different than normal, like the person entering didn’t want to be caught. Suddenly, she heard her mother ask sternly, “Where have you been? Why didn’t you call, Jung Ho? Do you know how worried I was?”

He replied in a very annoyed tone, “Hui, please leave me alone. I’m tired, and I want to go to bed.”

“Jung Ho! What’s that on your collar?”

“Nothing. Leave me alone. I’m going to bed.”

“Let me see!”

“I told you it’s nothing! Now, shut up and leave me alone! I need rest!”

Stomping soon followed the argument, as did crying. Yoomi crawled into her bed, her stomach feeling funny. “What happened to them…?”

---

That night was repeated the next day, except Hui knew from where her husband had come. “You’re with another woman, Jung Ho! You’re a married man! Why are you doing this to me? To your children?”

“Have you been snooping in my business?” he yelled back. Something crashed against the floor as he continued, “It’s none of your business what I do!”

“It is if it involves you having an affair!”

“Maybe because you can’t fulfill my needs! You’re such a nag! Look! Even now, you can’t leave me alone when I tell you!”

“Jung Ho! You should’ve talked about this, not found another woman!” Sobs escaped her throat while her pitch climbed as though she were trying to hide her tears.

“Hui, stop it! I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”

“Neither do I! I’m filing for divorce tomorrow!”

A short silence hung in the air for a few moments before Yoomi’s father yelled, “WHAT?! Divorce? Hui, think about this!”

“I will not share a husband with some two-dollar! YOU leave ME alone! I’ll see you in court!” Heavy footsteps made their way down the hall, but stopped momentarily. “You can either go sleep at your girlfriend’s or on the couch. Just don’t come into my room, you b*stard!”

Yoomi crawled into her bed and stared at the stars twinkling happily outside her window. At least Seung Ho didn’t know. Of course, he’d know soon enough. “Why, Dad?” was all she could ask as tears streamed down her face.

Part 2 - Why, Momma?

Seung Ho picked flowers outside, trying to make a large bouquet for his sad mother. She just didn’t smile like she used to; so he was going to make her happy again. So far, he held eight flowers in his hand. “Ten! Ten is a big number! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten! It’s as high as I can count! It’s a big number!” Picking two more, he admired his collection of small flowery weeds and nodded approvingly. “This’ll make Momma happy!” He ran into the house, kicked off his shoes, and found his mother lying on the couch in the den. “Momma, look what I got you! Look what I got you!”

She slowly picked her head up and saw the little white flowers in his hand. “Thank you, Seung Ho. They’re beautiful.” A small smile stretched across her face as she went into the kitchen to put the weeds in a glass of water.

“Did they make you happier, Momma?”

“Yes, thank you, Seung Ho. You’re such a beautiful boy!”

“Am not! I’m HANDSOME! Only girls are beautiful! Like Momma!”

She giggled and patted his head. “Yes, I suppose you’re right. You are very handsome, Seung Ho.”

“I love you, Momma!”

“I love you, too, baby.”

Convinced his work was done, he ran back outside to play. Hui watched her little bit of sunshine frolic through the grassy yard as a tear dripped from her eye. How long would it take for him to forget her? Would he cry for her at night as he cried for his father when he didn’t come home? Would he still love her or think she left him of her own free will? “Seung Ho, I will always love you,” she whispered, wiping her tear’s trace from her soft cheek. After another glance at her son, she went to find Yoomi to explain where they would be going the next morning and why. Yoomi was only nine, but she understood many things for such a young child. Perhaps she could explain everything to her three-year-old brother in a way that Hui never could.

---

“Seung Ho!” Yoomi called with a very tired voice. “Seung Ho, come here! I have something to tell you!”

He came running to her and smiled brightly. “What is it?” Looking into her face, his grin fell. “What’s wrong, big sister? Your eyes are all red! You’ve been crying, haven’t you? Did something happen?”

Looking into his innocent eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to tell him the news that would bring his world crashing down around him. It would be best if he found out tomorrow. At least he would be happy until then. “Nothing’s wrong, little brother. I just stubbed my toe, and it hurt; so I cried.”

“Oh. Well, you had something to tell me! What was it?”

“Just that I love you a lot, Seung Ho, and so does Momma.” She bent down and hugged him, ignoring his rather strong protests.

“EW! Stop! I’m getting cooties! Girly cooties! Ew!”

“Seung Ho, just let me hug you,” she pleaded in her very tired voice.

“…Okay, Yoomi. I love you, too.” His tiny arms wrapped around her neck tightly as though he knew something were wrong. After she let him go, he went to find his mother. He wanted her to hold him, because he had a really bad feeling that something terrible was going to happen. His mother’s embrace could always make any bad feeling go away.

---

Yoomi placed the last of her clothes in her suitcase and sighed heavily, not wanting to believe what was happening. “Why, Dad? And why you? Mom didn’t do this. I want Mom.”

Meanwhile, Seung Ho was packing for a trip, and he was very excited. “Momma, I wanna take this!” he yelled, pulling out his favorite stuffed monkey.

“Alright, Seung Ho. You can bring anything you want. You’re going to be gone for a long, long time.”

“Aren’t you coming, too?” he asked, fear making his voice quaver.

She sighed and asked, “Do you want to get some ice cream on the way there?”

“Aren’t you coming, too?” he repeated, putting his monkey into the suitcase very carefully.

“I have a present for you, Seung Ho! Do you want to see what it is?”

“It’s not my birthday, though.”

“I got it for you because I love you!”

“Oh, I’ll be right back!” he yelled, darting out the room. A few minutes later, he came back with dirt smudged on his knees, face, and hands. “Here, Momma. I picked these for you because I love you, too!”

Normally, she’d be upset that he’d picked her flowers from the garden. Today, though, it just made her want to cry. “Thank you, Seung Ho! They’re beautiful! I’ll put them in water when we’re done packing. But first, I need to clean you up!”

“Okay, Momma.”

A few minutes later, he was clean and had his things packed. “I’m ready!” he said proudly, his chest sticking out. “Where’s your stuff, Momma?”

“It’s in the car!” she lied, a fake smile on her face.

He frowned slightly and looked to his sister, who also had a fake smile. “What’s wrong, everyone?” he asked.

“Nothing! Why?” Yoomi said, grabbing his hand. “Aren’t you happy we’re going to…”

“Camp!” Hui finished, putting her children’s things in the trunk.

“Yeah, camp!” Yoomi agreed. “Now, get in the car! I’m going to sit in the back with you, alright?”

“Okay, Yoomi.”

It was a long, quiet drive. Finally, Seung Ho broke the silence by asking, “Where’s my present, Momma?”

“Oh, right here!” she said brightly, reaching into her purse and pulling out two small boxes. She passed them to the back seat and told them, “I love you!”

“I love you, too, Momma!” they replied, opening their presents. Yoomi received a golden necklace with a heart shaped locket, and Seung Ho got a necklace with a delicate cross on it.

“Thanks, Mom! It’s beautiful!” Yoomi shouted, fastening the necklace around her neck.

“Aww, I got a girly present!” Seung Ho complained.

“No, it’s not!” Hui said. “It’s to remind you of something. I want you to keep God first in your life. Everything will turn out okay if you keep Him first, understand?”

“Yeah, Momma. Thank you!” Yoomi put the necklace on her brother and gazed at the window as they parked at a café. “I thought we were going to camp!” the little boy complained.

“Well, we’re going in here, and your dad’s going to take you!” his mother said as brightly as she could muster.

They walked into the café, Hui carrying Seung Ho’s luggage, Yoomi toting her own. Their father stood by the counter with a young woman, a broad smile on his face. “Seung Ho! Yoomi!” he called, waving.

“Hey, Dad,” Yoomi muttered, wishing more than ever to run away with her real mother.

“Daddy!” Seung Ho yelled. “When are we going to camp?”

“Camp?” he repeated, looking at Hui questioningly.

Hui shook her head and closed her eyes, wanting to hold her tears back just a little longer.

“Is this your son, Seung Ho?” the young woman asked. “Oh, he’s so cute!”

Feeling a slight twinge of jealousy, Hui leaned down and handed her son his luggage. “Seung Ho, be a good boy and remember to wash your face, okay?”

“Momma? Momma, what’s wrong?” he asked, watching the tears stream down her face.

She patted his head, squeezed Yoomi’s shoulder, and started walking to the door.

“Momma!” Seung Ho yelled, dropping his suitcase. “Momma! Momma, where are you going? Momma, don’t leave! I’m sorry I got the flowers from your garden! I’m sorry I called the cross girly! Momma, I’m sorry! Don’t leave!”

Hui wanted so badly to turn around and hug him. She wanted to tell him it wasn’t his fault, but she knew if she turned around, she’d never be able to leave him. He continued to shout as the café door shut behind her.

“MOMMA!” he shrieked, running forward.

Jung Ho grabbed his son by the shoulder and commanded sternly, “No! Stop, Seung Ho! You’re mother’s gone! This is your new mother.”

“My…new momma?” he asked, looking at the young woman beside his father. “You’re not Momma! Momma’s outside! I want Momma!”

“Seung Ho!” Yoomi yelled, gathering her brother in her arms. “Seung Ho, Mom can’t be with us anymore. We have to live with Dad and our new mom, okay? Don’t be sad. Mom loves you very much. She just can’t be with us.”

“No! If Momma loved me, she wouldn’t leave!” he screamed, crying into his sister’s shoulder. “Momma doesn’t love me!”

“Yes, she does, stupid!” Yoomi yelled, tears flowing down her face and onto his head. “One day, you’ll understand. Just remember what she said, okay? Keep God first in your life, and everything will turn out okay.”

“Will God bring Momma back?” he whispered, grabbing a handful of his sister’s shirt.

“…One day, maybe. Not now, but maybe one day,” she told him, rocking him gently. “But for now, you have me and Dad. And we have this new woman here to keep us happy, right? Seung Ho, it’ll be okay. It’s going to be hard, but it’ll be okay. I promise.”

“You won’t leave me, will you?”

“No, Seung Ho. I promise.”

They new family climbed into Jung Ho’s expensive car and drove to the woman’s home. Seung Ho fell asleep in his sister’s arms, believing that one day, he’d see his mother again. After all, she still loved him, right?

Wow.
I normally stay away from the fic area. That was super powerful. I hope you didn't write that from personal experience. (Replies NOT required!)
Very well done, Kim! Please consider writing, as a career.

Wow, I second that, Kim. I'm literally tearing up right now. You did an awesome job. I, too, normally stray away from reading other fictions because they often cloud my own ideas, but I'm glad I read. This was very touching, tho, not gratifying. I sure wish there'd been a happy ending, when I think of Seung Ho today, maybe I'll just tell myself, there was one :)

Thank you soooo much! TT_TT You have NO idea how much your comments mean, as I've been told more than once, "...Maybe you should give up writing. It's not really your forte." >_>
