Part 1 - Prologue

The lush green leaves outside rustled in the wind, unnoticed by the occupants inside the hotel. Mr. Jones sat on his hotel bed, his head in his hands, not caring about the beautiful day there in California. All he wanted to do was get home to his wife and baby girl. He had flown to San Francisco earlier that month on business. He met with a man that was absolutely insane. After the deal had been completed, Mr. Jones found himself with little money or chance to get home. There wasn’t enough money for a plane ticket or gas to drive all the way back to Texas. Not knowing what else to do, he decided to go see the crazy business man he had just closed a deal with.

Mr. Jones knocked lightly on the door to a very fine condo. Shuffling feet and a little boy’s voice yelling, “I get it! I get it!” and a woman’s voice shouting, “Seung Ho! Ani! Ani!” managed their way through the oak door and into his ears. He smiled as the door opened to a beautiful Asian woman and a little Asian boy who couldn’t have been more than ten. “Yes, sir?” she asked, sounding a little breathless.

Mr. Jones jumped slightly, being pulled away from thoughts of his little girl being ten in nine years. “Uh, yes, is Mr. Ahn home?”

“Mr. Ahn? Yes, yes! Come in! Come in!” Standing back, she waved him in, but as soon as he had stepped through the threshold, her arm slammed into his chest. “Please remove your shoes, sir.” He looked down and saw large leather loafers, a pair of small sneakers, and some white sandals. Apologizing quickly, he slide off his own loafers and made his way to the couch. Mrs. Ahn bowed to him and muttered, “I will get him,” and left the room through the adjoined kitchen.

“Sung ham ee uh duh geh dwee sheep nee gah?” Again, Mr. Jones jumped slightly at suddenly being addressed. He looked down at the little boy who peered back at him expectantly. Apparently, he was just learning English.

“Come again?” he asked slowly, hoping he could rephrase his question.

The boy said nothing for a minute. Screwing up his face like he was in deep thought, he started to rock back and forth on the balls of his feet. Finally, he pointed at Mr. Jones and said, “Noo goo eh yo? Noo goo eh yo?”

The business man could only gaze at him with perplexity. He had decided, though, that this little boy wanted his name. Pointing to himself, he slowly said, “Mr. Jones.”

“Seung Ho!” replied the boy excitedly, thrusting his finger into his own chest. “Ah-”

But before he could continue the conversation, Mr. and Mrs. Ahn came back into the living room. She shouted something at Seung Ho and grabbed him by the arm, dragging him off to what Mr. Jones had assumed was his room.

“Ah, Mr. Jones!” said the round Asian man dressed in a fine suit. “I thought we had closed that deal! Is there something wrong?” He patted his stomach and smiled brightly.

“Uh, not with the deal, no!” stammered Mr. Jones, getting to his feet. “I, uh, I came to, er, ask you a favor.”

“Ask me a favor?” repeated Mr. Ahn like he hadn’t heard properly, his smile fading. After a few moments of consideration, he replied, “Well, what is it? Anything for a business partner as good as you!” His smile came back, brighter than ever.

Mr. Jones cleared his throat nervously and said, “Well, sir, you see, I, uh…”

“Oh, out with it! Out with it!”

“Yes, sir. Sorry sir. You see, I haven’t enough money to get home, and I was wondering if you could lend me the money for a plane ticket to Texas. I’d be most grateful if you could, but I’ll understand if you-”

Mr. Jones was suddenly cut off by Mr. Ahn’s laughing. Was he insulting Mr. Jones? Mr. Ahn waved his hand and said between chuckles, “Of course I’ll lend you the money! I’m sure you’d do the same for me if I were stuck in Texas, right? But, of course, we’ll need to draw up a contract so that you will have to pay me back. Just to be on the safe side, you see.”

Perhaps Mr. Jones would not have agreed if he had seen the insane twinkle in Mr. Ahn’s eyes. Perhaps he would have called a lawyer when he saw there was far too much fine print to read. Perhaps he would have denied the help if he knew Mr. Ahn wanted him to fly first class, something Mr. Jones couldn’t afford to pay back at the time. For whatever reason, he accepted, and unknowingly changed the future of his and Mr. Ahn’s family forever.

-

Two years later, Mr. Jones had forgotten about his contract with Mr. Ahn. At the time, he didn’t have the money to pay him back, so he kept putting it off, saying it was best not to worry over things you can’t control. His only concern was for his three-year-old daughter, Jessica. He wanted her to have the best of everything, even though he could only afford some of it. Most people would think a business man would get more money, but truth be told, he hadn’t worked for a year and a half. His wife had been earning their money as a registered nurse, though the hospital she worked for paid less than most. He tried to convince his wife to move to a better hospital, but she wouldn’t. She always replied, “They need me at this one!”

Obviously, it was quite a shock when the phone rang at 12:00 one afternoon and his wife called to him, “Honey, there’s a Mr. Ahn on the phone for you!” Mr. Jones nearly spit out his coffee and turned to his wife. She held out the phone to him and shrugged.

“Hello?” asked Mr. Jones.

“Hello? Hello? Mr. Jones?”

“Yes, this is he. Can I help you?”

“Yes, yes you can! Remember that contract we had drawn up for you to pay me back?”

Mr. Jones felt his heart sink as he pulled nervously at his collar. “Yes, yes, I do.”

“Well, you’re late, Mr. Jones!”

“I’m sorry, I’ve been out of work, but we’re trying to get the money together. How much do I owe you now?”

“Your first born.”

Mr. Jones chuckled and replied, “That much, eh? Give me the figures, and I’ll see what I can do.”

“No, Mr. Jones. You misunderstood me. In the contract it states that if you could not or did not pay me back after 18 months, you forfeit your daughter.”

“What the-”

“Now, I’m not talking about custody, Mr. Jones. Merely that your daughter will be married to my son. You see, he hasn’t been too popular with the kids at school since he doesn’t speak English, so I had to make sure he’d get married. I wouldn’t have done this if we were planning on going back to Korea, but we’re not, so there ya go!” Mr. Ahn’s laughing filled Mr. Jones’s ears as he listened with disbelief.

“…Wha… My… Your?”

“Yep!”

Mr. Jones shook his head, trying to remember the contract. He couldn’t believe Mr. Ahn was this insane. He knew the guy was a little off, but not this much! “But, I don’t remember-”

“All in the fine print, my boy! All in the fine print! And, you see, if you don’t comply, I will take legal action. It also says in the fine print that if you refuse, I can take your daughter into my custody. It’s up to you, dear man.”

It was hot. Very hot. Mr. Jones unbuttoned his collar, ran a hand through his hair, and tried to remain calm, but his rage was boiling. “Mr. Ahn, I…”

“Good bye! Have a nice day! I’m sure you will comply!”

“Mr. Ahn!” Mr. Jones pleaded, but all he got in return was a dial tone.

“What was that?” Mrs. Jones asked with a worried tone.

Running a hand through his now messy hair, Mr. Jones told Mrs. Jones to sit down and explained what had happened. She nearly fainted, but caught herself on the table. “WHAT THE H*LL DO YOU MEAN MY LITTLE GIRL IS GOING TO BE MARRIED TO SOME BOY SHE’S NEVER MET!”

Well, thought Mr. Jones, she’s taking this better than I thought!

Some time passed before Mr. and Mrs. Jones grew to accept this twist of fate, though they both did it through gritted teeth.

Part 2 - The Wedding Date

Jessica Jones was almost a normal girl at her school. She was an average student, an average athlete, but she didn’t look average. She had beautiful brown hair that fell to her shoulder blades that she never styled, hoping to divert the attention of boys, bright green eyes that could be seen from a mile away, and fair skin that seemed to refuse to tan too much. It seemed, however, that the boys still liked her; so she took on the personality of a cold girl that would probably grow up to be an old maid. It wasn’t that she wasn’t interested in them, but she couldn’t get involved, not just yet. She was still pledged to marry some Korean guy, and she couldn’t bring herself to be unfaithful, even if neither of them wanted to be in the “relationship.”

It might have been easier to just tell everyone that she was engaged, but she didn’t want everyone to know. Only a select few actually knew of her arranged marriage, and they were either very angered or very excited. The angry ones would often shout, “How could your parents let that happen? That’s so stupid! You need to go find love on your own!” while the excited ones shouted, “Oh my gosh! You mean he’s FAMOUS? Oh, over in Korea… BUT THAT’S STILL COOL! Wow!” The excited ones almost always came in with a print out of his picture or a news article about him or an interview he had taken part in. It really got annoying after a while, especially when they asked, “Can you translate what he’s saying?” No matter how many times she explained that she didn’t know Korean, but he knew English, they didn’t seem to quite get it.

The attention that they always seemed to bring with their news articles and pictures didn’t help Jessica to like the “updates” anymore. People would glance at the print outs and ask about the Asian man, and the owner of the piece of paper would normally say something like, “Oh, that’s some guy that Jessica’s a fan of!” This, of course, would bring unwanted questions about his work and random information about his life since the girls looking at his picture thought he was so cute with his blond spiked hair…or red…or black…or brown. It also seemed that his large ears that made him resemble a monkey were a big turn on for these girls. She would normally get angry half way through the questions, as every time she thought of him, she, of course, remembered the engagement, and would immediately feel sick.

He wasn’t a bad person, though. At least, the general impression he left on her said he wasn’t a bad person. It was strange how she knew him, though. He had called her one day when she was seven and said, “Hey, I’m Tony. You probably know me as Seung Ho, though. We’re supposed to get married. Thought I’d call and let you know I’m famous now. You should check out our CD. I’ll try to send it to you. Gotta go.” He didn’t sound too excited in the message that was left in the middle of the night, and now she knew why. He had just turned seventeen, and he was supposed to marry some seven year old over in Texas. It didn’t seem to matter much, though. They were both working hard to end the engagement. Tony would talk in interviews about past relationships, girls he liked, his first kiss, and things of that nature. Jessica would state constantly how she never wanted to marry and wanted nothing to do with men. Of course, once the engagement was broken, she was going to date and hopefully get married.

It wasn’t that they didn’t like each other. They enjoyed writing and e-mailing letters, but they didn’t love each other. How could they? Jessica was only fourteen, about to be fifteen, and Tony was twenty-four. In her opinion, that was just sick. Of course, he would constantly say, “I feel like some kind of child molester or something… being engaged to someone nine years younger than I am…”

It was painfully obvious, though, that no matter how much Jessica played like she hated boys and how unfaithful to the engagement Tony was, his father would not budge. Jessica let Tony know after her first day of high school via e-mail that she had given up trying. His father was nuts, and he’d never drop the engagement. Tony said he agreed, but he wouldn’t stop trying until the wedding day.

It was soon after this short conversation that she received a phone call from Tony early one October morning. The annoying ringing woke her up and automatically put her in a bad mood, but she was polite as she answered, “Hello?”

“Jessica?” asked a man with a strange accent.

“Yeah, who’s this?”

“Tony.”

“Dang it, Tony! What are you doing calling me at three in the bloody morning?” she growled back, not quite registering that she was finally having her first phone conversation with him.

“Sorry, but Father set the date.”

“What?”

There was silence on the other end for a moment before Tony replied, “Yeah… December sixteenth. THIS December. I’ll be flown out to Texas, we’ll get married, and you have to come back with me to Korea.”

This time, the silence was on her end. Then, it was like a rocket had gone off. “WHAT THE h*ll DO YOU MEAN GO BACK WITH YOU TO KOREA? I HAVE SCHOOL! I HAVE FRIENDS HERE! I CAN’T GO TO ANOTHER COUNTRY! I DON’T EVEN KNOW THE LANGUAGE!”

Tony quickly said, “I can’t leave my work! We have a concert in January! Listen, it’ll only be for a little while. Then, you can move back to America and come visit me in the summer. And don’t lie to me. I’ve taught you quite a bit of Korean! You can get by on the street.” Jessica snorted at this. She had forgotten everything he “taught” her right after she closed out the e-mail or put the letter away. “Anyway, you’ll have a private tutor for a while, then, after she determines you’ve mastered Korean, they’ll put you in a school so that you can still socialize, or whatever.”

She began to tremble uncontrollably. “Tony, I hate you! I hate your father! I can’t believe you’re making me do this! I HATE YOU!” Jessica pressed the “talk” button and slammed the phone down into the charger. “I HATE YOU!” she screamed one more time before the lights clicked on. She looked up at her father and mother who were staring at her with a mixture of worry and fear.

“What’s wrong, honey?” her mother asked gently, gliding forward while brushing her blonde hair from her eyes.

Jessica fell to the floor and started crying. Between gasps of air, she explained the phone conversation to her parents.

“WHAT?” her father bellowed. “YOU’LL ONLY BE FIFTEEN! MARRIED TO A TWENTY FOUR YEAR OLD!!”

Jessica’s mother joined her in crying and said, “There’s not much we can do about it, though… If we refuse, we’ll lose her forever, and she’ll have to go to Korea and stay! Oh, I wish I could kill his father!”

Jessica could only sit in the kitchen floor and cry uncontrollably. She only had about three months left to be a carefree fifteen-year-old…and a virgin, at that. That one thought sent her into hysterics. It was a long time before she was able to go back to bed. By that time, though, she was supposed to be getting ready for school. Her parents, however, decided to let her skip school for these special circumstances.

-

word to describe it. Ji Hae was sitting in front of Jessica the whole time, but they hardly spoke. That day, though, Ji Hae must have been bored, because she pulled out a large photo book and slammed it on Jessica’s desk. Jessica gazed at it and gasped. In front of her was an old picture of Hee Jun.

“Hey, don’t you think he’s cute? His name is-”

“Hee Jun.”

“How’d you know?” Ji Hae asked with shock. “No one around here knows about-”

“H.O.T. They broke up, though. Hee Jun’s going solo, along with Kang Ta, and the others are now in JTL.”

“Wow!” exclaimed the Korean girl. “You must be a big fan.”

“…Eh, not exactly. Sure, I’m a fan, I guess… I have their CD’s and all…” She sighed and folded her arms as Ji Hae flipped through the pages and stopped on a boy with large ears that made her think “monkey.” “Eh, I’d rather not look at Tony’s picture.”

“Why, you don’t think he’s cute?”

Jessica turned red and looked down. “Eh, yeah, I think he’s cute, but I don’t like him too much…”

“Why not?”

“…” Jessica didn’t want a fan of H.O.T. to know anything about her engagement.

“You know what I heard? I heard he’s marrying a girl from Texas! Right here in Texas! Supposedly, it’ll be in December! They said it was an arranged marriage. I don’t believe it. I think it’s just a nasty rumor.”

“It’s true…” Jessica muttered.

“Oh, yeah? How do you know?”

“Because I’m the one he’s marrying…”

Ji Hae sat still for a long time, gazing at Jessica with her mouth wide open. Then, she managed to mutter, “Do you know Hee Jun?”

“Yeah, kinda. I’ve written everyone in H.O.T once or…”

“OH MY GOD! CAN YOU ARRANGE FOR ME TO MEET HEE JUN? IS HE COMING TO THE WEDDING? OH MY GOD!”

Jessica’s eyes were like dinner plates as she stared at Ji Hae. This is exactly what she was trying to avoid. “It’s…I can’t…He doesn’t…No.”

Ji Hae glared at Jessica and turned around. “You know, I bet Tony doesn’t even like you.”

It felt like a sack of potatoes hit her in the stomach. Not like her? They liked each other just fine. They just didn’t want to be married. Why would he not like her? He’d better like her if they were going to be together for the rest of their lives! It’s not like she could get a divorce since they were getting married in a Catholic church. It’d be way too much paperwork.

“He…likes me…” she muttered weakly after a few moments had passed. He heart sank to her knees as the words came out of her mouth. It was like she didn’t believe what she was saying. Of course, why should she? She had just told him nearly a month ago that she hated him. He probably hated her, now, too.

-

December came quickly…quicker than she had ever seen it come. She couldn’t believe it. In a week, she’d be married to someone she had never met in person, but knew was famous. She’d be in Korea, trying to learn a new language. She knew a little, but definitely not enough to go to school, or even carry on a very basic conversation. It felt like a cold rock the size of her head had settled in her stomach as she thought about that which she really feared: being pregnant at sixteen.

It was Sunday. That Saturday, she’d be in her wedding dress. Her parents had already signed the paperwork saying it was okay for her to be married so young. It was happening so fast, she thought her head was spinning. Hoping against hope this week would drag on, she headed into the kitchen just as the phone rang. She picked it up and went to the refrigerator.

“Hello?”

“Hello? Jessica?” asked a man with a cute accent.

“Yeah, who’s this?” she replied, though she already knew.

“Tony.”

“Tony? Wha… Why are you calling? Did he call it off?”

“Unfortunately, no. I’m calling to tell you I’m here. I’m staying in the Motel 6. Horrible place, but it was the first one I saw. I’ll be here until after the wedding. After the reception, we’re leaving, okay?”

“OF COURSE IT’S NOT OKAY!” she wanted to scream, but she said, “Yeah, okay… Wanna, uh, get together before the wedding. It’d be horrible to see you in person for the first time on the ‘big day’…”

“Yeah, okay. Wednesday after school?”

“Sure. You pick me up?”

“Yeah, I’ll just have to look up a map to your house.”

“Okay… See you then…” Jessica hung up, feeling guilty. She was excited about meeting him. After all this time trying to get un-engaged, she was excited about meeting him. Wondering if this was just because he was famous, she put the phone in the charger and started to fix herself some instant ramen, figuring she’d better get used to Korean food.

Part 3 - The Wedding

Her hopes came true. The days did seem to drag; that is, until Wednesday. He had come to her house, taken her to eat at McDonald’s, (“I’ve been wanting to eat here ever since I moved back to Korea! It’s just not the same over there.”) and taken her bowling. She loved to bowl, but she did poorly this time. She was so worried about him liking her enough to at least hang out with her that she dropped her ball three times walking to the lane, gotten ten gutter balls in one game, and actually threw the ball into the next lane, which, luckily, no one was using. Tony, instead of being embarrassed like Jessica was, found this all very amusing. “Of course,” he said, “I don’t mind at all, because I’m winning.”

“Well, duh!” she said to herself. “He wouldn’t be embarrassed. He’s used to much worse being famous and all…”

Unlike Jessica, who was too nervous to speak, Tony found this to be a great opportunity to talk. “So, what kind of music do you like?”

Very original…, she thought, smirking slightly. “Mostly pop and hip-hop. Rock and roll is good, too. I like Christina Agulara and people like that. But, K-Pop is good, too! I really like your CD’s! They’re awesome!”

Laughing, he replied, “No need to flatter me.”

“Well, I was being honest… I think it’s great that you can sing and dance!”

“It’s your turn, by the way,” he said, pointing to the monitor hanging above them. “I’ve been waiting on you to go for a while, now…”

Blushing furiously, she stood and went to retrieve her ball. “Uh, yeah… Sorry. Well, uh… I… I… I like your hair?”

He ran a hand through his blond spikes absentmindedly as he nodded a thank you and watched her approach the lane. She’s not so bad, he thought, scratching his chin. I’m sure she’ll be much more talkative after we get to know each other. Man, I should’ve made an effort to get to know her before incase I couldn’t break off the engagement… He was pulled from his thoughts suddenly as he laughed his hardest all night. Jessica had run forward to throw the ball, but managed to make it fly backwards into the game room.

-

The rest of the week flew by like it was only an hour. She couldn’t believe how quickly she was in her rather plain wedding dress, waiting for the music to start. It wasn’t a big wedding. There weren’t a lot of people there, as she didn’t want a lot of people knowing she was getting married at fifteen, though she was sure they’d find out, if they hadn’t already. After all, her maid of honor, Christy, was her best friend, but was also the biggest gossip Jessica had ever met.

The wedding was all a blur to her except for the rings and the kiss. She remembered distinctly how cold the metal was against her finger, and how much larger his ring was than hers. She also remembered the lurch her stomach gave when the minister said, “You may now kiss the bride.” No! she thought. We don’t want to kiss! We don’t want to! Too late, though. He had turned her to him and gave her a light kiss. As he pulled away, she noticed he looked none too happy. In all actuality, he looked kind of sick. Of course, she imagined she did, too, after kissing some guy she just met who was nine years her senior.

The reception sucked in Jessica’s opinion. She ate a little, talked a little, danced with Tony and her father a little, and opened a few presents. She got a lot of Tupperware and things of that nature, but nothing seemed to make her smile. She wondered why they gave her things like this, as she was sure Tony had plenty of kitchen accessories at his house in Korea.

The night soon came to an end, though. Before she knew it, she and Tony were in a rental car, driving to the airport. Her heart raced as she boarded the plane, having left her luggage to be put with everyone else’s below them. Tony sat down beside her and sighed. “Well, we might as well grin and bear it. It’s too hard to get a divorce in a Catholic church. Dad made sure of that. …Man, I feel like some pervert!”

Jessica chuckled nervously and peered out the window. How many times was she going to fly a plane, going back and forth from Korea? “So, when I graduate, do I have to move to Korea permanently?”

“Yeah, I guess. Well, you can still visit here, but we’re going to live in Korea. I know, you don’t like it, but I have a job there, you know? I can’t leave JTL.” He placed his hand on hers and patted it lightly. “I’m sorry, I really am, but…” Shaking his head, he removed his hand and leaned his chair back, getting ready to go to sleep.

Jessica sighed heavily and leaned hers back as well. It didn’t go very far, and she was uncomfortable, but she managed to go to sleep, anyway, but not before hearing the women behind her saying, “Oooh! He’s a cutie! I wonder what he’s doing with that little white girl? You don’t think he’s one of those perverts that…?”

Part 4 - The Wedding Night

Jessica woke up a few hours later and gazed sleepily out the window on her right. She could see what she assumed to be Korea beneath her, and her heart sank again. The realization of what was happening hit her like a speeding train, and she only wanted to lock herself in a room and cry. This was too much. She was fifteen. She shouldn’t be married! It was so stupid! So so stupid! She hated the man sitting beside her for going along with the idea, even though she knew he had tried to end the engagement, but she hated his father even more for tricking her father. And another thing, while she was on this hating spree, she hated her father for not getting a lawyer to look at the paper work or even reading all the fine print. Why did he have to be so stupid? Why was the whole world stupid?

Shortly after she had woken up, she heard Tony shifting. She turned to look at him and watched as he slowly blinked his eyes and gazed lazily around. He looked at one of the flight attendant and asked, “How much longer until we land?”

She gazed at her watch like she was being personally offended and said, “About thirty minutes.”

He thanked her and ran a hand through his hair. “They’ve never been that rude to me before…”

“It’s probably because you’re sitting here with a fifteen year old, both of us wearing wedding rings…” she muttered, the distaste obvious in her voice.

“What was that?” he asked.

“Nothing…”

He sighed and ran a hand through his short, spiky hair. He really didn’t want to marry her. She was a kid to him. She was fun to talk to, sure, but there was nothing wrong with talking to a young girl. Marrying her, however, was a different story. He didn’t know what he was going to do. He definitely didn’t want to do anything with her, not even kiss her. His stomach nearly turned inside out at the very idea of it. Shrugging slightly, he thought that maybe when she turned twenty or so, they could live like a real married couple, but for now, they’d be like friends, trying to get used to each other.

Suddenly, a thought struck him. “What are Woo Hyuk and Jae Won going to think?” he wondered aloud. Sure, they already knew, but they were certain he’d find some way to call off the whole wedding, but that wasn’t really want was bothering him. He’d stay at their house or they at his all the time. What was he going to do with a fifteen-year-old girl there? A little girl in a house with three men wasn’t exactly good for publicity. Of course, being married to her wasn’t good, either, but better than having her stay in a house with him and his friends…

“What are you worried about?” Jessica asked slightly annoyed. “I’m more worried about what the kids at school are going to think of me than your two friends. Besides, they know about this…”

“Yes, but they’ve never seen you…”

“ARE YOU SAYING I’M UGLY?” she shouted.

“No! Not at all! I’m saying that they thought I could get out of it, even if I had to go to America a week before the wedding to do so! They weren’t really expecting me to come back with you! Plus, you know, this isn’t exactly something that can easily be imagined! The realization of it wouldn’t have hit them yet, you know!” He knew his words poorly explained the situation, but English wasn’t exactly his best subject in school, though he was better in it than others…

She folded her arms and sighed. “Whatever… I just hope this year passes quickly so that I can go home!”

His eyebrows furrowed as he looked at her pout. Her poor attitude was really beginning to piss him off. He wasn’t exactly happy about it, but he wasn’t pouting like a baby! She didn’t have to keep saying how she hated him, hated Korea, or hated everything that was going on! She could at least try to bear it like he was! Then, it struck him. She was a baby. She wasn’t an adult. Adults in this situation wouldn’t be handling it much better than she was…

“I’m sorry… If I could, I’d change it so that this didn’t have to happen…” he said, glancing at his watch as the “Please fasten your seatbelts” message came on.

-

They had landed in Japan and flown to Korea in silence. Their cab took them to Tony’s house, and they went inside and unpacked their things. Jessica really liked the smell of the place. She couldn’t quite identify it except by “Tony’s smell.” It was just good, but this didn’t really help her to like her situation.

After she had put her clothes into the closet and chest of drawers where Tony had indicated, she walked around the place to get a good look at it. Nice kitchen; dining room was pretty; both bathrooms were big enough; spare bedroom was okay; living room had enough stuff to keep her occupied like a huge TV and tons of DVDs; master bedroom was beautiful; but the room she liked the most was what she had from then on referred to as the music room. There was a keyboard, a guitar, a big CD player, and tons of CDs stacked all over the place. She was in there for three hours before Tony managed to lure her out with food.

Night came almost too quickly, and at around eight, Jessica began to cry. Tony came into the music room and placed a hand on her shoulder, asking, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nighttime!”

“…Yes, it is…” he replied, a little confused.

“It’s our wedding night!” she gasped, hiding her face.

He looked at her perplexedly for a moment; then let out a soft, “Oh…”

Bawling into her cupped hands she shouted, “I’m not ready for this! I can’t do this! I’m only fifteen! I know I’m from America where it seems all the girls my age are all doing it, but I can do it! I’m one of the good fifteen-year-olds!”

Tony smiled and held back his laughter. “It’s okay,” he finally managed to say. “I was trying to figure out how to tell you I didn’t want to.”

Her sobs stopped immediately as she gazed up at him through her red, puffy eyes. “Really?”

“Yeah. Why don’t you stay in the guest room while you’re here, okay? Oddly enough, I don’t think either of us will be up to a ‘wedding night’ any time soon.” Brushing her hair away from her face, he smiled and walked away, saying, “I’m getting a shower. See you in the morning.”

She muttered an okay, but wasn’t sure he could hear her. Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all…

Part 5 - School

It had been two months, and the two hadn’t so much as held hands the whole time. Of course, even if they wanted to, they wouldn’t have the time. Tony had an exhausting schedule that he could barely keep up with, and Jessica’s tutor was there everyday, hitting her on the head with her stick and shouting Korean words at her. She was amazed she learned anything at all with all the stress she was going through, mostly from her tutor. By May, though, Jessica had learned enough to go to school, but she wasn’t allowed in regular classes, as she wasn’t fluent, or semi-fluent at that. She had three classmates, each of them having a parent in the military that was stationed here in Korea. The lessons were taught in half Korean, half English, and they spent an hour and a half a day after everyone else had left learning more Korean. It was hard, but the hardest thing was getting used to being called “Jessica Ahn.” On her one day off from school, her tutor was back in her face, shouting more Korean at her. She couldn’t believe how strenuous school was here, and would be glad to go back to America and slack off. Of course, compared to this, being a model student in any American school would be slacking off in her opinion.

Tony had done three television appearances in which, of course, JTL had to perform, in the meantime, a concert, and came out with a solo album. The concert, though, took a lot out of him. While he was dancing, his knee began to really bother him, but he managed to mask the pain and keep going. At the end, though, he had to get Woo Hyuk to help him home. They had decided not to do any concerts since.

He was really sick of coming home after working at the studio, though. For five months, every time he set foot through the door, he heard that old bat of a tutor yelling at Jessica, Jessica yelping as the stick smacked her, and Jessica meekly giving answers to the questions, a good third of them being wrong. It wasn’t uncommon for the tutor to ask, “Do you want something to drink?” and for Jessica to answer, “Yes, I am very tired.”

It got a little better after she started school, though. She didn’t come home until near dark, and on Sundays, the tutor was back, yelling her head off. He was thankful it was only once a week now instead of every bloody day. He hated that tutor so much that if Jessica didn’t hurry up and learn Korean, he’d kill the old bat and burry her in the back yard.

At first, though, he didn’t want Jessica to go to school because of the media attention they had gotten when everyone discovered he was married. It was alright, though. She wasn’t amongst the Korean teenagers, just some American kids or half Korean kids that didn’t speak Korean very well. After all, he did have fans her age, and as he knew all to well, fans were crazy, though there weren’t as many of them as there were before. The media had found out a few months before that he had married a teenager, and album sales dropped to a new low. After much explaining, a few good interviews, some good publicity (like donating to charity), and some time, sales picked back up.

Tony almost didn’t mind being married, now, though. In fact, he felt like he was a big brother more than being married. His “little sister” was at school, being tutored, and slept in her own bedroom. Sure, it wasn’t anything like being married, but he figured marriage wasn’t that bad. His main problem with the entire situation was that he couldn’t date or fall in love with anyone else. He was stuck with his “little sister” for a long time, at least until she could stop being a dong seng (one of her new vocabulary words) and be a wife.

Jessica’s feelings toward Tony were mutual for a period of time, but quickly dwindled one day late in May. It was Wednesday, and she was tired. Her brain was exhausted, her body was exhausted, and she didn’t think she could take one more “Korean Session” at school. Of course, it was better than Ms. Kim, the tutor, but anything was better than that.

It was 3:40 PM, and she was enjoying her ten minute break between the end of school and her language session. She had gone to the bathroom, gotten some water, and was looking around the place, getting a good feel of it before she was admitted to be in regular classes. As she walked down the hall, she noticed a group of Korean girls conversing loudly, heading her way. She stepped to the side to let them pass, but as they saw her, silence fell over the group. They gazed at her for a moment, and one shouted something in Korean. All Jessica could translate of it was, “Tony’s,” which wasn’t translating at all.

Suddenly, she found herself in the middle of the group, being pulled on from every side. She could hear her uniform jacket ripping, feel her skirt and shirt being pulled on, and saw paper and pencil being thrust at her. The harder she tried to get away, the tighter the mob became. It seemed like more and more girls were joining the gang with each squeal of excitement. After a few moments, though, she stopped hearing as many squeals. Instead, the air was filled with shouts of anger. Hands with long nails reached out viciously to her, scratching at her face, neck, and clothes. Hard shoes kept finding their way to her legs, sometimes her knees, which hurt the worst. Screaming in pain, she tried to get a teacher to come, but someone behind her covered her mouth. After a few more moments of torture, the noise died down and the group began to part. Jessica saw her teacher coming to her and noticed the look of horror on her face before she collapsed, the stress of everything finally taking its toll.

-

Tony came home a little late that night. He was at his studio, listening to a new group hoping to become gasoos. He had to teach them a dance and see if they could do it, record them singing, and get their contact information in case he decided to produce them. They had come in an hour before he was supposed to leave, but he offered to stay late anyway and let them try out. He was working hard the whole day and told those in the main office to hold all calls since he’d be too busy to take care of much.

He dropped his bag and took off his shoes, completely exhausted. Gazing at the clock, which glowed a red 9:46, he sighed and rubbed his neck. Surely Jessica was home by now, and hopefully she had gotten something for herself to eat. He came into the living room and saw that not even the DVD player was on. In the kitchen, not a dish had been disturbed. Now, he was getting a little worried. He walked quickly into the music room and didn’t see her, nor was the CD player on. No one was in the bathroom nor the guest room. He was on the verge of panicking when he heard soft sobs coming from across the hall. He darted into his room and there on the bed was Jessica, her face in her hands, her legs under her. “Jessica,” he asked tenderly, “what’s wrong? Did something happen at school?”

“Fey affaf me…” she muttered between sobs.

“What?” he asked, removing her hands and trying to get her to look at him.

“…They attacked me…”

“WHAT? Who attacked you? Who? How? Where?”

“At school, some of the girls saw me and grabbed me. A lot seemed like they wanted signatures, but then some girls started yelling and scratching at me…”

Tony stood completely dumbfounded. He had thought since she was in a special class and got out later, he wouldn’t have to worry about this. He bent down and forced her to look at him and was horrorstruck. Her face was covered in bandages, but he could still see some red marks on her forehead, cheeks, nose, lips, and chin. Her legs were bruised badly, and her hands were bandaged completely. “Did they hurt you anywhere else?” he asked, not sure if he wanted the answer.

She nodded and pulled down the collar of her shirt, revealing more bandaging and exposed scrapes. “The doctors say it wasn’t deep enough to cause scars, though… He said it should heal just fine… I’ll look better in about a month…”

He shook his head as he stared into her puffy green eyes. How could this have happened? he wondered. Why would they allow this? Before he could even begin to answer his questions, Jessica flung herself on him and started crying again. Not knowing what else to do, he wrapped his arms around her and patted her head. “You poor girl…” he whispered, stroking her brown hair.

They stayed like that until she had finally cried herself to sleep, and he took her to her room and laid her down on her bed. Brushing her hair out of her face, he knelt down and kissed her forehead. “Goodnight,” he whispered, though he knew she couldn’t hear him.

Part 6 - Break Down

It was the end of the school year. She had swapped schools and became nearly fluent in Korean, which was quite an accomplishment. During that year, she had briefly met Woo Hyuk and Jae Won after school one day, but didn’t get much opportunity to talk to them, as she was constantly studying, doing homework, and being taught more Korean. The two of them thought she didn’t know much Korean, and she liked to encourage this, as she thought they might say something important one day.

The day came when she was going to go home and enjoy slacking off for her sophomore year. Tony took her to the airport and waved goodbye to her as she boarded the plane. As she stared out the window at him, he said something that greatly surprised her, or, that is, she read his lips. “I’ll miss you,” he said. “I’ll call you.”

Her heart jumped and felt as though it were going to flutter away, it was beating so fast. Before she knew what she was doing, she had replied, “I’ll miss you, too.” She didn’t have time to say anything else, as the plane started taking off. She watched him until he was out of sight and sighed. What was happening to her? Didn’t she hate this guy just a few months ago?

-

Sophomore year was exactly as she thought it would be: a breeze. Vacations were long, weekends were bliss, and she hardly had to study, as she was quite used to having to absorb information at a phenomenal rate compared to what her teachers now expected of her. Of course, Ji Hae had become her “new best friend,” but she didn’t really mind. Ji Hae was pretty cool, actually. She was a little obsessed with Hee Jun, but it was very fun to talk about random K-Pop bands in Korean as people looked at them strangely.

Jessica and Tony had been e-mailing back and forth for months before he finally called her. He sounded very tired, but she understood. He was calling in the middle of his night, hoping to talk to her after she had gotten home from school. They talked for three hours before he finally had to go. He said he was about to fall over and didn’t want her to hear him snoring on the phone.

Of course, as usual, about every other week, her friends came in with news articles and rumors about Tony. They had several message boards marked under their favorites that they constantly checked. Every now and then, they’d bring print outs of posts made on there. Most of them were either, “OMG~!!!oneone!!11! He iz soooo fione!!11!!!!!!!11 I wish I wuz married to him instead uv that other lil gurl~!!11!1!” or “EW~!! How could u like him? He lookz like a monky!” She didn’t care what they said, though. None of them really knew him, so their words were empty to her.

Summer vacation came quickly, and she was actually looking forward to going back to Korea for the summer. The best part of it, though, was that she had plenty of money to fly there and back any time she wanted and could go on shopping sprees, as she and Tony had to share his money since they were married. She smiled at this thought. If there was one good thing coming out of this marriage, it was the money.

Two weeks were left until she was going to travel back to Korea. She was so excited that she could barely concentrate in class as they reviewed for their exams. However, two days later, something had popped her balloon of happiness. Ji Hae came in with a news report in Korean, and Jessica read over it. She gasped at the picture and fought back the rage and tears that were building up inside her. It read:

“<Tony Ahn, married over a year ago to a fifteen-year-old from America due to an arranged marriage, was seen at the Seoul airport kissing the well-known Hyori. When approached by reporters, Tony waved them away and merely stated, ‘No comment.’ Hyori, however, had plenty to say.

‘He’s been wanting to end this relationship with his so-called wife since it started,’ she told our correspondent. ‘He’s finally decided to come public with his decision to annul this joke marriage. We’ll be able to finally start dating after this mess is settled.’

With Tony denying to speak to reporters on the subject, we’ve no choice but to believe Hyori. Mrs. Jessica Ahn is due to return to South Korea in twelve days, and should be able to further answer questions lingering on the public’s mind about the breakup.>”

Jessica covered her mouth as she peered at the paper and looked at the picture corresponding with the report. There he was, her husband, kissing Hyori on the cheek. She had always thought Hyori a, well, not very morally sound person, but she never thought her a home wrecker. Of course, most of her anger was directed at Tony for keeping this from her. He should have said something over the last year instead of just let her find out by news report!

-

She was in the plane coming from Japan. Her anger had only been fed by Tony seeming to be all too innocent. He never mentioned the report, nor anything about an annulment. He merely said that he couldn’t wait for her to get back, as it was a little lonely without her there. Of course, he had been staying at Woo Hyuk’s and Jae Won’s mostly, but he said he still missed her.

What a fat lie that was! she thought. Does he take me for a fool? Surely he knows I’d have found out some way! As she got off the plane and entered the main building, she saw Tony waiting for her, a couple of guards at his side. He and the guards carried her luggage to the taxi and they drove to his house. She was silent the entire trip.

He was a little worried about her. She hadn’t even said hello to him when she met him at the airport. He had taken special care to make sure he got her out before the media got there, which was easy as he purposely told them the wrong flight which landed two hours after hers.

Taking her luggage into the house and dismissing the guards, he looked to her and asked, “Why so quiet?”

She really didn’t feel like explaining, so she just answered, “Nothing.” If he was too stupid to figure it out, she wasn’t going to explain it to him.

He had to endure the silent treatment for three days before he finally cracked. He had come home from work and said, “Hi, Jessica. How was your day?”

“Hmm…” was her oh-so-enthusiastic response.

“Are you going to answer me?”

“Hmm…”

“D*MN IT! WHY THE H*LL AREN’T YOU ANSWERING ME?” he shouted, throwing his bag down, fed up with her childish game.

She gazed at him in shock for a moment before she regained her composure and folded her arms. “If you can’t figure it out, why should I tell you?”

His face turned red as he started to tremble. Jessica knew he was about to explode, not that he already hadn’t, and took off down the hallway. He followed closely behind shouting, “DON’T RUN FROM ME!”

She ran into the first room she came to, his bedroom. Slamming the door mere seconds before he could reach her, she attempted to lock it, but he forced the door open before she could. She reached up to slap him, but he grabbed her wrist in midair. She tried it with the other hand, but he stopped her again. Unable to use her arms, she began to kick at him; so he forced her on the bed and held her legs down with his shins. “NOW!” he bellowed, “ANSWER ME!”

“WHAT?” she shouted back.

“WHY THE H*LL HAVEN’T YOU BEEN TALKING TO ME?” His words trembled with anger. He had had enough of her treating him like a boyfriend that forgot their two week anniversary.

There was silence for a few moments before he yelled for an answer again. She replied, “Because I know about you and Hyori!”

The anger in his face immediately melted away as be became dumbfounded. She continued, “I saw the article that said you were planning to get an annulment and go get with her! I saw you kissing!”

He lowered his head, avoiding her eyes, and replied slowly, “She was in France for a month. Over there, they kiss each other on the cheek to greet each other, or at least I think they do. So, to welcome her back, I gave her a friendly peck on the cheek, and she and the media spun it into something that was so far from the truth. I didn’t mean to…”

“LIAR!” she shouted. “OF COURSE YOU WANT TO GET WITH HER! SHE’S OLDER AND PRETTIER AND SHE’S EVEN KOREAN!”

Losing his temper again, he shouted back, “WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? YOU DON’T EVEN LIKE ME!”

Tears came bursting out of Jessica’s eyes as she stared at him. A sharp pain shot through her heart when she heard him accuse her of something she had been trying to convince herself of all year. Then, words came flooding from her mouth before she could stop them. “I didn’t want to lose you, Tony…”

He gazed at her, unable to understand the broken thoughts running through his mind. “You… didn’t want to… lose… me?”

Jessica sobbed and gazed into his eyes, not sure of what she had done, but knew she spoke the truth. The thought of losing him now made her want to do exactly as she was now: cry.

Tony’s face had automatically it seemed lowered to Jessica’s until their noses nearly touched. Maybe she isn’t so childish after all, he thought as he gently covered her soft lips with his.

Part 7 - Jae Won and Woo Hyuk's visit

Jessica woke early the next morning. She muttered a few complaints as the sunlight glared through the window and into her squinting eyes. Gazing at the alarm clock, she scratched her head and yawned widely. It was only eight in the morning, and she smiled, realizing that there was no tutor or school facing her later that day. As softly as she could, she rose out of bed and turned to look at the other occupant. Tony was fast asleep, still fully dressed. Her face burned as she stared at him. She couldn’t believe it. They kissed! He had given her her first real kiss!

She went into the kitchen and looked around for something to cook, the events of last night playing though her head over and over. As she pulled out the eggs, she thought about the kiss and smiled uncontrollably. Mixing a couple of the eggs in a bowl to be scrambled, she recalled him wrapping his strong arms around her and holding her as he apologized for yelling at her. Pouring the yellow goo into a skillet, she remembered falling asleep in his arms as he hummed the tune of one of his songs.

As she finished cooking breakfast, she heard Tony wander out of his room and turn on the shower. Her heart jumped as she heard the bathroom door click open a few minutes later and concentrated heavily on buttering her biscuits, her face burning again.

Tony emerged from the hallway, hair still wet and towel draped around his shoulders. A small smile crept up his face as he took his plate from the counter and sat down across from Jessica, who seemed rather determined not to look at him. Her innocent reaction nearly made him laugh, but he managed to control the urge to chuckle.

He almost couldn’t believe what had happened the night before. He had kissed her! She was only sixteen and he twenty-six, but he still kissed her. He couldn’t stop himself, though. There was something about her large, puffy eyes that gazed at him almost pleadingly, as though begging him to never leave… begging him to protect her always… It was almost exactly how he hoped his wife would look at him before he was married to Jessica.

His smile faded as these thoughts came to him. It wasn’t that he was unhappy. On the contrary, he was wondering what to do now to keep her happy. What did she expect? What did she want him to do? This would be easier if he were in a normal marriage instead of trying to let a sixteen-year-old grow up. He ran his hand through his wet hair, beginning to become frustrated with himself for putting himself into this position with no clue what to do next.

Jessica glanced up, her face still pointed at her plate, the contents of which she’d barely touched. He looked aggravated, or completely lost. She wasn’t sure which. “Tony…? Are you okay?”

He jerked his head up at the sound of her voice and smiled, nearly laughing as she blushed. “Yeah, I’m fine. I was just thinking…”

“About what?” she asked, looking back down at her plate and hoping her face wasn’t red again.

“Ah… Just wondering… Nothing, really.” Throwing a glance to the clock over the stove, he stood and bowed. “Great meal. Thank you! I need to go get ready for work.” With that, he turned on his heal and exited the kitchen.

Jessica smiled and stood to remove their plates from the table. It’s not so bad… Being married to him…, she thought as she scraped the scraps into the garbage disposal and put the dishes in the dishwasher.

A few minutes later, Tony came out of his bedroom fully dressed with his orange shades propped on top of his spiky hair. “I’m off!”

She ran forward and bowed. “Goodbye! Have a good day!” she said brightly.

“’Bye. See you when I get home.” Casting a nervous glance at his watch, Tony smiled and gave Jessica a quick kiss. “Have fun in the music room!” And with that, he was out the door.

-

Work was a little boring today for Tony Ahn. There weren’t many groups trying out that day, and most everything that needed to be done was being taken care of by secretaries and other paper pushers. It seemed that he wasn’t the only one experiencing a slow work day. Jae Won stopped by, soon followed by Woo Hyuk. Tony decided to take his lunch break a little early and led the way down to the recreation room.

“<So, what brings you two down here?>” Tony asked, pushing the button for Mountain Dew on the Pepsi machine.

“<Ah, nothing to do at the office, so we decided to see what you were up to,>” Woo Hyuk responded, leaning his chair back with his arm over the back. He always seemed so cool and carefree.

“<Doesn’t look like you’re doing much, either,>” Jae Won added, sitting down and placing his elbows on the table to rest his chin on his laced fingers.

“<Nah, nothing really. I might even go home early today,>” Tony laughed. “<I wouldn’t mind leaving early…>”

Jae Won and Woo Hyuk exchanged glances and started laughing. “<Why?>” Woo Hyuk asked between chuckles. “<So you can let the babysitter go on her date after all?>”

Tony flushed and retorted, “<For your information, she is NOT that young! She’s quite mature for her age!>”

Jae Won and Woo Hyuk exchanged glances again, except they were nervous this time. “<Eh, Tony,>” Jae Won asked, “<you haven’t, eh, you know… with her, have you?>”

Tony raised his eyebrow in confusion for a moment before he realized what he was being asked. “<What? Of course not! That would be… No! I couldn’t… I can’t believe you even… No!>”

Woo Hyuk laughed again and replied, “<Well, at least we know our friend isn’t a child molester! I told you, Jae Won! I bet they haven’t even held hands yet! Tony’s a good man!>”

Jae Won raised an eyebrow and leaned forward, brushing his wavy hair from his eyes and running a finger over his plump lips as though thinking deeply about his next words. “<I somehow doubt that, Woo Hyuk. Tony, what HAVE you done with the girl?>”

Tony flushed again and looked down. “<Only, you know… Kissed a little…>”

“<D*mn it! Here…>” Woo Hyuk muttered, passing Jae Won a few hundred won. “<So much for thinking you had any morals!>”

“<What do you mean? She’s my wife!>”

“<She’s still sixteen, man!>” Woo Hyuk said with exasperation.

Tony stared at his green soda can rather determinedly, his stomach suddenly feeling like it was slowly turning inside out. Was he wrong to show any affection to Jessica? They were married, after all. But, Woo Hyuk was right… She was still sixteen…

“<So, when do we get to talk to Mrs. Ahn?>” Jae Won asked, getting up to get himself a drink.

“<Huh?>” Tony asked, being pulled suddenly from his thoughts. “<Uh, haven’t you already met her?>”

“<Well, yeah,>” replied Woo Hyuk before Jae Won could answer. “<But we didn’t really get to talk to her. Not that we can really talk to her anyway, since she doesn’t know Korean. But you can be our little translator. Man, that tutor was tough, yah?>”

Jae Won nodded and said, “<I’ll be surprised if your wife doesn’t have permanent knots in her head from all that whacking. Of course, I can’t say it wasn’t funny.>” He made his voice higher as he attempted to imitate Ms. Kim and Jessica, “<‘Would you like milk with your tea?’ ‘Yes, I am Jessica!’>” The two other members of JTL laughed heartily as Tony stared at his green can, not sure if he should be angry or laugh, too.

“<Yah, that was good. So, when do we get to meet the baby that stole your heart, eh?>” Woo Hyuk asked sarcastically.

“<Huh? Oh, I guess you can come over today if you two can get away early enough. Uh, if you get there before I do, you can talk to her until I get there. Tell her to cook, too, if she hasn’t started already. And be prepared. You WILL be eating American dishes. She doesn’t know anything about cooking Korean foods. Well, she thinks she does since I can’t break her heart and say instant ramen isn’t really considered cooking Korean.>”

The three laughed and began to talk about plans for their next album.

-

Jessica had just put two hamburgers on to cook when she heard knocking at the front door. “<Yes? Who’s there?>” she asked nervously.

“<Yah, Jessica? Oh, you’re Korean has improved! It’s Woo Hyuk and Jae Won. You gonna let us in or make us stand outside all night?>” Laughing soon followed the rude question, which made Jessica a little angry.

“<Tony’s not home right now…>” she said as she opened the door and bowed them in. “<Are you joining us for dinner?>”

“<Yeah, Tony invited us over while we were at work,>” Jae Won replied, stepping into the living room. “<Sorry that we appeared on such short notice.>”

She smiled at him and suddenly felt much better. She always thought she’d like him much better than Woo Hyuk. “<It’s okay. I was just cooking some cheese burgers. Uh, I hope you don’t mind eating American. We’re having> apple pie <for dessert, too…>”

Both men smiled broadly at her as they replied in unison, “Ahpool pahee? <Really?>”

“<Uh, yeah!>” she said, a smile stretching across her face. “<I’ll be in the kitchen, then…>”

Once Jessica was clearly out of earshot, Woo Hyuk turned to Jae Won and asked, “<You know what she was talking about?>”

“<Not a clue.>” he answered simply.

-

Jessica beckoned the two men into the kitchen and served them their meal while she put Tony’s in the oven to keep warm. She was starting to worry a little, not because Tony wasn’t home yet, but because she didn’t like being alone with these two men. She hardly knew them, but had the feeling they didn’t like her too much.

“<Ah, this is very good!>” Jae Won commented, swallowing a rather small bite of his burger. “<I didn’t know kids could cook over in America.>”

Woo Hyuk laughed and added, “<Well, maybe she’s different because she’s married.>”

Jessica pretended that she didn’t understand anything but the complement and said, “<Thank you very much.>” So, is that why they’re rude? she wondered. Because I’m married to Tony and I’m too young for him?

“<Ah, it appears her Korean isn’t so good after all,>” Woo Hyuk said. “<I thought Tony said she was fluent now? Or close to it.>”

“<Maybe he only thinks she is? Or maybe she was before she left for nearly a year, and she forgot a lot?>” Jae Won suggested.

“<That’s very possible.>” Woo Hyuk nodded and appeared to be deep in thought. Scratching his chin, he said, “<Ah, I’ve forgotten almost all of my English from school, so I guess…>” He took another bite of his burger and stared into space with his face slightly tense like he was thinking.

“<Yah, when’s Tony coming home?>” Jae Won asked. “<I thought he said he’d be coming home early.>”

“<Hey, Jae Won…>” Woo Hyuk addressed him, “<How much Korean do you think she knows?>”

“<Uh, I’d guess about enough to carry on a basic conversation. Why?>”

Woo Hyuk raised his eyebrow and a mischievous smile stretched across his face. “<Jessica?>”

“<Yes?>” she replied, looking up from her half eaten dinner.

“<Does Tony ever- Hi, Tony!>” Woo Hyuk shouted as Tony walked into the dining room. “<How was your day? I thought you were getting off early!>”

“<Nah, some people wanting to try out came right before I was going to leave, so…>” He smiled at Jessica and asked, “Where’s my supper?”

“In the oven keeping warm,” she replied, smiling back. “And don’t touch that pie sitting in their, either, or I’ll hurt you!”

He laughed as he grabbed his plate and sat down at the table across from Jae Won. “<So, talked to her much?>” he asked, eating a French fry.

Woo Hyuk and Jae Won shook their heads. “<Not really,>” the older of the two, Woo Hyuk, said. “<She doesn’t appear to know very much Korean.>”

Tony looked at Jessica, and she smiled, mouthing, “Just go along with it!”

He raised an eyebrow and looked back to the others. “<Sorry, I didn’t realize she had forgotten so much. I’ve just been talking in English to her.>”

The conversation that followed was rather dull, according to Jessica. She wasn’t allowed to say anything, as she “didn’t know Korean that well.” They were only talking about work plans, anyway. Nothing interesting…

Part 8 - Do You Like Me?

After supper, they sat in the living room; Tony and Jessica on the couch, Jae Won in a chair, and Woo Hyuk on the love seat. Jessica listened intently to the current conversation, as they were discussing dating, and Jae Won and Woo Hyuk seemed to be trying to choose their words carefully. She was certain that they didn’t like her, now.

“<Ah, yeah, I remember my first date. The girl was, what, two years younger than me? I was okay with that, but any younger…>” Woo Hyuk said, looking at the wall. “<Of course, not everyone has the same feelings about ages.>”

Jae Won scratched his head and said, “<Umm… I don’t mind a younger girl, I just don’t want to be on different levels with her. Like, I wouldn’t want to be my age and date someone who just got to the dating age… Only because of the different expectations and maturity levels!>” he added quickly. “<Of course, as we got older, it’d get better. I mean, some married people are 15 years apart, right?>”

Tony’s jaw was set as he nodded, leaning forward to prop his elbows on his knees. Jessica just crossed her legs and gazed at whoever was speaking blankly. She was trying her best to seem like she was completely oblivious to what they were saying, but it was getting harder as the conversation progressed. Did they think they chose to get married so young? Did they think it was their choice to be married in the first place?

Woo Hyuk glanced to Tony, then to Jessica and asked her, “<Jessica, what do you think about being married so young to someone so much older than you are? I mean, Tony’s nearly ten years older, right?>”

Tony’s eyes grew larger and his body stiffer. His stomach lurched as he bit his bottom lip. Why was he so nervous? Gazing at Jessica from the corner of his eye, he waited for her response, not sure if he wanted to hear it.

Jessica sat in silence for a bit as she thought about her answer. What did she think of being married to Tony? Sure, she had said she hated it, but then she thought it wasn’t so bad. Of course, they didn’t live like they were married, but… Before she had come to an answer, Woo Hyuk asked, “<Did you understand me?>”

She nodded quickly and said, “<I think that being married right now is bad, because I’m so young and I’m not really ready to take on the married life, but… I… I like being with Tony. He’s a nice guy. I…I like Tony…>” Feeling her face burn, she turned her gaze to her feet, not wanting to see Tony’s reaction.

Tony, however, wasn’t reacting much at all. He looked rather blank, as he was in shock. She likes me? he thought. I kinda figured she did, but… I never heard her say it…

“<So, what do you think of being married to a young girl, Tony?>” Woo Hyuk asked, sounding a little sarcastic like he was getting ready to make a joke.

“<Huh? Oh, uh…>” Tony stammered, trying to get his thoughts together to form a decent sentence. “<Well, it’s like we’re not married. Just siblings, really, when you think about it… She has her room, I have mine… But I guess it’s okay.>” Right as the statements went from his confused brain out his mouth, he knew they were wrong. Okay? It was better than okay! It wasn’t great, as it was confusing as heck, but they weren’t like siblings anymore. It was now like they were dating or something. After all, he had kissed her twice now. Three times if he counted the wedding, but he didn’t consider that a real kiss, as he really didn’t want to even touch her at the time.

Jessica put her hand over her heart absentmindedly, feeling the quick beating. So, he doesn’t like me… she thought. He still sees me as nothing but his little sister… Pain seared her heart as tears stung in her eyes. Why was she upset? Isn’t this exactly what she had expected? Yes, she answered herself, but I thought after that kiss…

Tony looked at the others as his thoughts became a little more coherent and said, “<Wait, that’s not what I meant! I meant to say, uh…>”

Jessica jumped to her feet and said, “Stop it, Tony. You know you meant what you said, so just drop it.” Finding it harder and harder to hold back her tears, she left the room, heading for the bathroom. “<I’ll be right back!>” she shouted behind her, not wanting them to know something was wrong.

Tony, too jumped to his feet, but did not follow. He said under his breath to Woo Hyuk, “<You b*stard! How could you do that?>”

“<Do what?>” he replied, looking rather offended. “<All I did was ask a question! I was just curious!>” He sounded genuine, but Tony didn’t care if he was being truthful or not.

“<I know you were against this marriage from back when I told you about the engagement,>” Tony shouted. “<I was, too, but now we’re married, and I’m not getting divorced! So you can just accept it, because that’s my decision! I really don’t want you against it, though.>”

Jessica wiped her tears on some toilet paper and listened to Tony yell at his friends. She was taken aback by his willingness to defend their marriage. “I thought he didn’t want to be married to me…” she muttered, dabbing her eyes again.

“<Hey, man, stop yelling!>” Woo Hyuk shouted back. “<Can you really blame me for feeling this way? I mean, my friend is married to some kid! I was against the whole thing because 1. She’s too young and 2. This wasn’t your decision! But I was willing to accept the marriage, if you recall, as I didn’t object after you came back to Korea with her! I knew you weren’t even going to touch her until she was at least of age. Now, however, I don’t know what to think. It’s like you’re some kind of child molester or something, and it’s sick!>”

Tony began to shake as he retorted, “<I am NOT a child molester! I have you know I’ve never touched her in that way! I wasn’t aware that a peck on the lips was that bad if you were MARRIED! What do you want me to do? Just treat her like my little sister until she turns 18 then all of a sudden say, ‘Hey, Jessica, you’re an adult now. Let’s make love!’?>”

“<No, I didn’t say->”

“<So what do you want me to do, Woo Hyuk? Huh? How am I supposed to act in this marriage? I don’t really know what I’m doing here, okay? I’m just trying to do what I think is right! And I think that maybe, just maybe, we should like each other more than friends, but differently than siblings, since we’re eventually going to be like a real wedded couple! At least it wouldn’t feel like incest!>”

Woo Hyuk stared at Tony, his face growing angrier. “<Look, okay! Don’t take out your anger on me because you answered with, ‘We’re like siblings,’ a few minutes ago! She said she liked you, and I don’t know why you didn’t say it, too! In fact, I was expecting you to say it, and I was going to poke a little fun, that’s all!>”

Tony’s face suddenly fell from the mad look to a very shocked, slightly saddened look. “<I…I’m… I don’t…>”

Woo Hyuk also looked a little shocked as he replied, “<Ah, don’t say anything. I’m sorry. I should’ve been a little more supportive… I shouldn’t have been trying to give you a hard time about it… I’m sure you’re dealing with enough without me starting in on you, too…>”

Tony nodded and said, “<I shouldn’t have taken my anger out on you, though… Sorry… I… I’d better go check on Jessica… See if she’s doing okay, you know…>”

Jae Won stood and said, “<Umm, well, I’d like to still talk to her if she’s feeling okay… So, uh, we’ll be in the kitchen eating some more of this, what’s it called?> Ahpool bee?”

“Apple pie,” Tony corrected, a smile slowly making its way across his face. “<Apple Bee’s is a restaurant. Umm… Anyway, I’ll go see her, now…>” He turned and started heading down the hallway to the bathroom as Jae Won and Woo Hyuk went into the kitchen to raid the fridge for what was left of the night’s dessert.

Soft knocking on the door made Jessica jump as she tried to listen to the hushed conversation. She could only pick up bits of it, but got the general impression that they had apologized to each other and all was well. She quickly wiped her eyes and nose again and asked, “Yes?”

“Jessica? It’s me, Tony. I was seeing if you were okay. You didn’t get sucked down the toilet, did you?”

She laughed and replied, “No, no. I was just touching up, that’s all. I just wanna look my best for your company!” She rattled her basket of cosmetics a bit to make the story more convincing.

“Ah, okay,” he replied. “Well, we’ll be in the kitchen. Jae Won seemed to have really liked that pie. Umm.. Don’t take too long, alright? They seem really intent on getting to know you a little better.”

Jessica put her ear to the door and heard Tony leaving the hallway and sighed. As she gazed at her reflection, she bit her lip and wondered what she was going to do about her appearance. The nose could be fixed with some base and powder. Her red, swollen eyes, however, would take a few minutes of a decent story to explain away. She debated on little lies like jabbing herself in the eyes with her eyeliner, pretending she had contacts and that she had merely jabbed herself a couple of times trying to get them out to moisten them, and wanting to wash her face after dinner, and the soapy water getting in her eyes.

As she put on some powder to cover her red nose, she decided on the last choice. She put a little powder under her eyes to cover the tear marks and left the bathroom, running her story over and over in her head.

Upon entering the dining room, everyone turned to gaze at her. The moment they made eye contact, though, pity seemed to take over their falsely happy faces. Tony walked over to her and whispered, “What’s wrong?”

“Oh, me?” she laughed, “<Nothing’s wrong at all!>” she said in Korean, wanting Jae Won and Woo Hyuk to hear that she most certainly hadn’t been crying. “<I was washing my face since it felt a little dirty after supper, and the contacts got in my eyes! I mean, uh…>” She panicked a little, then said, “<Haha! I mix up my Korean all the time! The soapy water got in my eyes is what I meant!>” Ending her sentence with a fake laugh, she sat down and smiled, hoping no one suspected the truth.

However, the truth was so obvious that Tony couldn’t hide the concern from his face. He knew she hadn’t really had a problem mixing up words since she finished school last year, and contacts and soapy water were two completely different things; very hard to mix up. He threw a glance to Jae Won and Woo Hyuk, wondering if they picked up on it, too, but if they had, they were doing a good job of pretending otherwise.

“<Ah, I hate it when that happens!>” Woo Hyuk said, poking his pie with his fork. “<When I still lived with my mom, I did it all the time, and she’d go around saying, ‘Oh, why have you been crying, Hyukie? Is there something wrong?’>” He took a bite of his pie and smiled at Jessica, waiting for her to start a good conversation.

She felt like she was in the spotlight, and as such, she couldn’t think of a single interesting thing to say. “<Umm… So, have you ever been to America?>” She knew it was a dumb question, because she had known when they were in California.

“<Yeah, I didn’t really like it,>” Jae Won answered. “<California scared me some. Remember that girl asking Kang Ta to sleep with him? That really scared me!>”

Woo Hyuk and Tony laughed as Jae Won looked a little sick. Jessica wasn’t sure what to do, so she just chuckled a little. “<Well, it’s not the same everywhere. America’s a big place. California is much different than Texas, for instance. And the northeast is about as opposite as the southeast as you can get.>”

Jae Won nodded thoughtfully and seemed to be imagining what other parts of the U.S. were like.

The night carried on like that. They talked. They laughed, and eventually, they said goodbye and goodnight, leaving Tony and Jessica alone.

“Ah, that was a good supper. Thank you, Jessica,” Tony said as he followed her into the living room.

“Oh, uh, it was nothing!” she responded, blushing for what seemed to be the millionth time that night. “I’m just glad everyone liked it!”

She stopped to look at the clock and yawned. “Ah, it’s already ten thirty… We should get to bed! You have work in the morning!” Smiling, she turned to face him and held her arms out for a hug.

Tony smiled, too, and embraced her. Pulling away slightly, he looked into her large, green eyes, feeling his heart beating very fast against his ribcage. She looked so beautiful, staring up at him with her innocent eyes that looked so bright against her dark hair. Before he could stop himself, he had lowered his lips to hers, expecting to just give her a quick goodnight kiss, but he didn’t pull away. He started to squeeze her tightly, pulling her closer and closer until she was completely against him.

Jessica was shocked, to say the least. His lips were pressed firmly against hers, and she could feel his heart beating against her chest. She didn’t know how to react, but decided she liked it. Running her hands through his hair and settling them on the back of his head, she, too, pressed her lips firmly against his.

Tony pulled his hands away from her back and settled them on her waist and slowly moved them to her hips while forcing her to move backwards. He didn’t know what he was doing anymore. He just followed his instincts and the one thought in his head: “More!” Finally, he had her against the wall, but she didn’t seem to mind. In fact, it seemed that she rather liked this. Moving his hands up slightly, he gingerly placed his thumbs under her shirt and began to raise it.

It was then he stopped completely and stepped back, lifting his hands and running them down his chest like he was wiping some water off them. No! he shouted at himself. I can’t believe I did this! What was I thinking? She’s still sixteen! “I’m… I’m sorry!” he apologized, turning around. “I… I didn’t mean to…to…”

Jessica slowly came back to her senses as she stared at him retreating from her. “Huh? Tony, it’s okay… We were both… It’s not your fault…” Sighing, she folded her arms and looked at her feet. “We…should be more careful… Even if we are married…”

Tony turned to look at her and found it hard to find words. “It’s…It’s not that I don’t like you or anything… I just… I just don’t love you… You’re still so young and innocent. I…I just can’t bring myself to…to think about… You’re so pure; I don’t want to take that from you.”

Nodding, she walked to the entrance of the hallway and said, “I like you, but I don’t love you either. But… I think I’ll grow to love you.” She smiled slightly, avoiding his gaze, and went to her room. So, he does like me. He just doesn’t love me, yet…

-

Before she knew it, summer was drawing to a close. Jessica only had a week left with Tony, and for once, she wasn’t looking forward to going back to America. She wanted to stay in Korea to spend more time with her husband, but she did want to see her friends and family again. It doesn’t matter, she told herself. I’ll get to e-mail him at least. And I’ll even call him on the weekends. It’s not like I’m totally losing touch…

Tony’s feelings were quite the same. He, too, didn’t want her to leave. He enjoyed having her with him. The sight of her cooking breakfast when he woke up, her dancing in the music room to another random CD, and her bright, cheerful smile all made his heart jump. A smile would always stretch across his face when he saw her, and he was beginning to understand why. He had told Jessica he liked her right after Woo Hyuk and Jae Won left, but it wasn’t true. He had told her a lie to keep himself from doing what he had tried to do that same night. The truth was, he was beginning to love her, and this scared him more than anything. She was only sixteen, after all, so she was incapable of loving him, but his heart just wouldn’t listen. Please, just wait! he would often plead with himself. Wait until she’s at least of age! It’s just going to be painful to love her now when I can’t even tell her I do! Not until she’s ready… He knew it was futile to ask his heart to understand, but he tried nevertheless.

It was really hard to live with the secret when Jessica’s last day came. He continuously had to stop himself from confessing his love to her, each time biting his lip against the painful jab through his chest.

The pain only intensified as she boarded the plane and he stood outside to watch it take off. Again, she managed to get a window seat on his side, and she stared through the glass at him, waving her small hand. “Goodbye!” he read from her soft, pink lips. “I’ll miss you! I’m going to call!”

He waved back and nodded, saying, “I’ll miss you, too. See you next summer.” The urge to say, “I love you,” seemed almost too strong to control, but he just bit his lip again and waved. They smiled at each other as the plane began to roll down the runway. He didn’t leave until the flying vehicle was well out of site, and the longing to see her again began to build.

The end of my posting spree for the day...

Part 9 - Prom Date

Jessica was soon bored with school and her surroundings. Everything was a gray blur to her until October, when Christy, her maid of honor, suddenly brought something very important to her attention.

“Oh my gosh! Jessica! Look at this!” she shouted, imitating a Brooklyn accent.

“What is it? And why are you doing that?” Jessica asked, walking to her friend, who stood in front of one of the many notice boards in the hallway.

“Sorry, force of habit!” she apologized. “Anyway, look at that! They’ve announced when prom is! This’ll be our first prom, Jessica! Aren’t you excited?”

She raised an eyebrow and looked at the notice Christy was excitedly pointing to. It read:

“Prom will be held on May 21st starting at 6:00 PM and going to midnight. It will be at the college rec. center. Any volunteers to be on Prom Committee should see Mrs. Chambliss at break on Thursday.

- Principal Doughs”

Jessica smiled as an idea suddenly struck her. “Oh! I can invite Tony to come!”

Christy grinned as she said, “Yeah, we’ll get to meet the guy finally! You’d better not tell Ji Hae, though. She’ll go crazy!”

“Tell me what?” asked someone from behind.
“Yi! Oh, uh, Ji Hae! Hi!” Christy said, laughing nervously. “Oh, nothing. We were just talking about prom, that’s all.”

“And let me guess. Jessica’s bringing Tony, am I right?”

“Well, I’m going to ask him to come…” Jessica responded, looking down and feeling embarrassed.

Ji Hae laughed and said, “You very well should ask him to come! He is your husband, after all! I mean, going with another guy would be cheating, right? I wonder what he’ll wear? Well, anyway, I hope he comes. I wouldn’t mind meeting him! Heck, I could even bring my CD’s and ask him to sign them!” She laughed again and walked down the hallway, heading for her math class.

“Oh, man. I was sure she was going to ask you to ask Tony to ask Hee Jun to come down, too!”

Jessica scratched her neck as she thought about that statement from her blonde friend and wondered how she understood it. “Well, it wouldn’t matter if she did. It would be a joke. She knows I can’t get Hee Jun to do anything, even with Tony’s help. Not that I’ve tried, but… Oh, well… Let’s get to class. We’re probably already late as it is…”

-

Tony was putting the last of the dirty dishes in the dish washer when the phone rang. Wiping his hands on the towel that was draped over his shoulder, he walked into the living room and picked up the phone. “<Hello?>”

“Tony?”

“Yeah? Jessica?”

“Yeah! Guess what I found out this week!”

“What’s that?” he asked, unable to stop the smile but not really wanting to.

“Prom’s gonna be in May on the 21st! It’s my first prom… So I was wonder if…uh…maybe you could…you know…”

“Come with you?” Laughing, he sat down on the couch and stared at the blank TV, not really seeing it, but instead seeing Jessica’s embarrassed face.

“Uh, yeah… If you can. I know you’re really busy and all, so I haven’t got my hopes up or anything, but I thought I’d call and-”

“Sure, I’d love to come!”

“…Really?” she asked, sounding a little unconvinced.

“Yes! I know how important prom is. And I wouldn’t mind seeing you before the summer, anyway, even if it’s only two weeks before you’re due to come here.”

“Yeah, I wanna see you, too.” Her loud yawn made Tony laugh again, and she said, “Hey, don’t laugh! It’s, like, reeeeally early in the morning here! You should be glad I even called!”

“And I am!” he replied, hoping she’d take him seriously.

“Yeah, well… Yeah! Anyway… I gotta go… I have to sleep…” She yawned again as she told him goodnight and hung up.

“<…Prom…>” Tony told himself. “<Maybe that’ll be a good time to…>”

-

Their second anniversary was much better than their first. They didn’t even contact each other for the first one. Tony was busy with work, as usual during the Christmas season, and Jessica was studying for midterms. This one, though, Jessica received a cute bear that said, “Sa Rang Heh (I love you),” and a note that read, “Hello, Jessica. Thought you deserved something for the second year! Hope you enjoy it!” She had decided not to take the saying on the bear too seriously, as it was only a saying on a bear. As she walked back inside to check off December 16th from the calendar, she wondered if Tony had gotten her present: a cute pink bunny that held a basket of chocolates saying, “Don’t ‘cha just love me?” It was a feminine, but she figured he’d like it anyway since it had candy.

-

It took so long for May to come that Jessica couldn’t believe it when it finally did arrive. Everywhere in the school, there were banners and fliers advertising prom, and there were a few people that volunteered to walk around during break and lunch to get signatures for “The Prom Pledge to Not Drink Underage” and “The Prom Pledge to Stay Abstinent” and things like that.

It was the week before prom, and Tony would be there in three days, and, as usual, would be staying in a hotel somewhere in town. At break, Jessica was telling Ji Hae and Christy about how she wanted to just skip school for that week to go see him, but had to stay for exemptions when a tall, slender girl with long blonde hair walked up to the small group.

“Hey, girls,” said the tall student, pulling a clipboard and pen out of her back pack that hung at her hip. “Here, Christy, go ahead and sign.”

Christy took the clipboard, skimmed over it, and said, “I noticed you haven’t signed,” as she put her own signature on the paper. Passing it to Ji Hae, she looked at the girl in the eye and smiled.

“Of course not! I won’t be there! My family’s going out of town,” she explained, throwing her long hair back.

“What is it?” Jessica asked as Ji Hae also skimmed the list of names and put her own on it.

“It’s a pledge to stay abstinent on prom night,” explained the girl with an air of a math teacher explaining how to work a rather difficult problem. “Here,” she said, taking the clipboard from Ji Hae and handing it to Jessica. “Sign.”

“Okay,” said Jessica, reaching for the pledge. Just before she grabbed it, the girl lifted it quickly out of reach and put it back in her book bag.

“Ah, I forgot,” she said, sounding rather sarcastic. “You’re married. You won’t be needing to sign this, then.”

“Hey!” Jessica said, feeling her face burn. “I have you know I’m still a virgin and plan to stay that way for some time, okay?”

“Yeah, whatever helps you sleep at night,” laughed the girl before turning to find others to sign the pledge.

“Oh, just ignore her,” Christy said. “We know you haven’t done anything with Tony. And if you had, I’d kill him!” She threw punches in the air and smiled at Jessica, apparently thinking that this would cheer her up.

“Ah, thanks!” she said, putting on a false smile. “It doesn’t bother me, really. At least people don’t think I’m just sleeping around. I mean, I have every right to, you know, with Tony, but we don’t.” Laughing, she tried to find other things to talk about than prom, but failed miserably and ended up just listening to Ji Hae and Christy’s conversation about who was taking them.

-

Tony was rudely woken up early the next morning by a phone call. “<Hello?>” he muttered into the receiver, covering his eyes with his forearm as he lay on his back in the bed. The soft pink fur of his stuff bunny brushed against his arm, and he smiled as he pulled it close to him.

“Tony?” came the delayed response.

“<Yeah… Who’s this?>”

“Jessica!” said the girl, sounding rather annoyed.

“Oh, hi. Sorry about that. Just woke up. Man, it’s early…” he mumbled, looking at the alarm clock.

“Sorry… I didn’t mean to-”

“It’s alright. I don’t mind. What’s going on?”

He could hear a heavy sigh from the other end as Jessica said, “Well, it’s stupid, but I wanted to talk to you about it…”

“Well, it must not be stupid if you called me. What’s wrong?”

“Well…” Jessica told Tony about the snooty girl and her pledge, feeling dumber as each word fell from her mouth.

Tony laughed at scratched his head. “Wow, sounds harsh. And did your friend beat her up for that?”

“No… She offered to beat you up instead.”

“Well, that’s….thoughtful.” He closed his eyes and felt himself slowly falling back asleep. Opening them again, he said something he normally wouldn’t have, but as he was half asleep, his brain hadn’t quite matched the speed of his mouth. “So, why don’t we give you a reason to not have your signature on that paper?”

“…What?” Jessica asked, a little confused.

“That was the abstinence pledge, right?” Tony asked, not waiting for an answer. “Look, Jessica… I’ve loved you for a while now. I’ve been wanting to show you my love, but it never seemed like the right time… So, uh, what I’m trying to say is… Let’s give you a reason to have not signed that abstinence pledge.”

Jessica was in shock from what she was hearing. Was Tony asking what she thought he was asking? “Tony, I…”

“Yes?” he asked, still not caught up to what he asked of her.

“Um… Sure. Okay. I mean, we’re married, right?”

“Right!” He had no idea what he was agreeing to anymore.

“Well, I’ll let you go. You sound tired. G’night, Tony.”

“’Night. Love you,” he muttered.

“…Good night.”

He listened to her hang up and smiled as he placed his phone back in the cradle. Having no clue why he was happy, he fell back asleep, hoping to re-enter the dream about eating ice cream with Jessica in Paris while he flapped his pink bunny ears at her.

Part 10 - Pre-Prom

Tony had come to Texas a few days before, and Jessica had spent some of her after school time with him. The first day he came, she went to go see him. She went up to his hotel room, knocked on the door, and smiled as he let her in. “Hi, Tony!” she greeted him warmly. “Thought I’d come see you today! When’d you get in?”

“Noon-ish. So, what brings you here? I thought you couldn’t drive?” He smiled, too, leading her to a chair to have a seat with him.

“Oh, I’m seventeen, silly! I can drive! I’m borrowing my mom’s car, though. She won’t let me get one since I’m supposed to be moving to Korea in, like, another year.”

Laughing, he stared into her eyes and couldn’t keep the grin off his face. He had missed her so much…

Jessica noticed he couldn’t take his eyes off her, but only because she couldn’t take her eyes off him. She couldn’t believe that in three days, they’d be at her first prom, and then probably coming back to this hotel room… But that didn’t matter, now. She just wanted to be with him and not think about the future, only the current moment she was with him. “So, did you miss me?” she asked jokingly.

“More than you know! I’d sing, ‘Right Here Waiting for You’ to you since it describes perfectly how I feel, but that’s Kang Ta’s trademark English song.”

“Oh, you can still sing it if you want… I don’t mind…” Leaning forward, she placed her hands in the middle of the table and looked into his eyes expectantly. Her heart raced as he placed his hands on hers and began to sing to her.

(a/n: Sorry if this seems to be taken from the ficcie “Right Here Waiting…For You,” but it’s really not! I was listening to Kang Ta sing it, and it just fit so perfectly… >_< Sorry!)

The visit lasted much longer than she had anticipated. After the song, they sat on the bed, Jessica in Tony’s arms, and watched a little TV, though neither were really concentrating on the shows. Every now and then, Tony would gently kiss Jessica’s shoulder or hand or cheek or head… She would giggle and tell him to stop, though she didn’t want him to, and he would…for another few minutes. It was ten thirty when she got home, and her mother, of course, was upset and grounded her from seeing Tony until prom night. Jessica was angered, but didn’t fight her mom on the subject, as it was only three days away.

With all this time to herself, though, she began to think about her situation. She was still confused about how she felt. She didn’t like him. Her feelings were stronger than that. But she was to young to love, wasn’t she? She was only seventeen, after all. Of course, how old would she be before she could love him? Eighteen? That was only half a year away, so was it possible she loved him now?

And what about that Saturday night? She was even more confused about her feelings for that. She was scared, sure, and very nervous, but she didn’t want to stop it from happening. Had she wanted this all along? Why when she was first married did she not want to even kiss Tony, and now, two years later, was she planning on moving the relationship forward and actually acting like his wife? Why wasn’t she bothered by this? Maybe this meant she loved him. Or maybe this meant she was like the other girls at school and she just wanted to have “fun.”

Tony, too, used this time away from Jessica to contemplate the situation. He had concerns, but they definitely differed. He remembered his early morning conversation with Jessica, and wondered if he should say, “I was joking!” Of course, that might make her think he was joking about loving her, too, which he didn’t want. She didn’t seem to bothered by anything, and she had agreed to the “wedding night” on prom night, so he shouldn’t have had any guilt. But, of course, he had plenty to go around. He kept hearing Woo Hyuk in his head, saying, “Don’t touch her! She’s still so young! I can’t believe you’re even thinking about doing this!” Every time those words popped in his head, he felt sick.

He also had to wonder about her feelings. He recalled telling her he loved her, but she didn’t reply. Did she love him? Of course she didn’t. She was too young. So, how old would she have to be to love him? Twenty? If she didn’t love him, why did she agree to his crazy idea? Did she feel she had no choice? Was he pressuring her into it? He didn’t know what to think or do, so he decided to do nothing and just let things happen according to how Jessica wanted them. If she changed her mind, he’d just say okay. If she didn’t, he’d say okay with a smile.

-

Jessica studied herself in the mirror. Her hair was in sparkly curls, the front being held back from her face with diamond barrettes, her make-up looked good, as it normally did when it was done by a professional, and her long, nearly form-fitting blue dress complemented her figure nicely. She hoped that Tony would like it, and wondered when he was going to come get her.

Just as she sat down to wait, the doorbell rang. “Jessica, Tony’s here!” her mother called, sounding rather happy. Jessica sighed to calm her nerves and walked into the living room, smiling as she saw her husband.

He was dressed in a black suit with a white rose in the front jacket pocket. In his hand were a dozen white roses with a red on in the middle and a white corsage in a plastic box. Oh, wow! she thought. He looks GOOD! Man, if we weren’t married, I’d be afraid some girl at school would try to steal him from me! She couldn’t stop smiling as he walked forward and handed her the roses. “Hello, Jessica.” Her heart jumped at the sound of his deep voice. “You look beautiful.” Jessica didn’t get a chance to respond, as her mother interrupted the ceremonial exchange of compliments.

“Oh, let me see those!” her mother said, taking the roses. “I’ll go put them in some water. Now wait right here! I want some pictures!” She scuttled off to the kitchen, leaving Jessica and her husband by themselves.

“So,” Tony asked, “how are you feeling?”

“Nervous,” she answered truthfully.

“Yeah, I can imagine why… First proms normally make people nervous.” He wanted so badly to ask how she felt about their plans for later that night, but her mom came back, and he most certainly didn’t want her to know.

The short blonde woman pulled out a camera and beamed at the couple. “Okay, get together, now! I want a picture of Tony giving you the corsage! That’s it! Such a lovely picture! Oh, that was so nice! Okay, now, get together! Jessica, stop laughing! Smile for me! Oh, how lovely! Oooh! Just one more! Tony, you take your hand off of her! I do not CARE if it is only her waist, you will NOT be touching her tonight! There, that’s the last picture I need. Have fun! No curfew, unfortunately. Your father and I agreed that since you were married, you didn’t need one. Have fun!” She waved them out and watched them drive away from the house.

Tony sighed with relief as he headed for the college. “Man, your mom’s-”

“Eccentric?” Jessica finished.

“Well, yeah. Scary lady… I felt like I was back at my first photo shoot.”

Jessica giggled and said, “Ah, don’t mind her. She’s just excited, that’s all. Most moms are like that.”

Laughing, he replied in a high-pitched tone, “’You will NOT be touching her tonight!’ She’s very protective of you.”

She blushed and looked down at her knees. “Yeah… If only she knew, right?”

Tony coughed, scratched his head, and said, “Ah, how are you feeling about… uh… tonight. You know…”

“Oh, uh…” she stammered, being caught off guard. “Well, uh, nervous, mostly. ‘Cause, you know… Well, it’s not like…” She leaned over to him and brought her hand to her mouth and whispered, “It’s not like I’ve done it before!"

Laughing again, he patted her hand that still remained on her leg and said, “Neither have I, and I’m not all that nervous about it!”

She trembled at his touch and stared at him with shock. “You mean you’re a… a…?”

“A virgin?” he completed for her. “Yeah, what made you think I wasn’t?”

“Well,” she started, trying to say it in an intelligent way, “you’re famous, and so I figured that, well… Well, you know, you have fans that would, like, rape you if they had the chance, so you have plenty of willing girls all the time…”

He grinned and shook his head. “Just because I had the opportunity didn’t mean I was going to take it. I wanted my first time to be special. In other words, I was waiting for marriage, like the good boy that I am!” Chuckling, he continued, “And, anyway. I don’t see what you have to be worried about. Half the girls in your class have already done it, right? And I know they can’t be nearly as smart as you, so…”

She blushed again and replied, “Uh, yeah… I guess…”

They sat in silence for the rest of the trip to the prom, each lost in his or her own train of thought.

Part 11 - Prom Night / The Ending

Prom wasn’t as exciting as Jessica had hoped it would be, but she was glad Tony was there with her. She and her date seemed to be the unofficial center of attention, as everyone managed to find them and interrogate Tony. He didn’t mind at first, but quickly grew annoyed at the continuous questions, nearly all of them being the same: “Why didn’t you get divorced?”; “Are you planning on having kids?”; “Did you learn English for her?”; “So, like, is this normal for Koreans?”

Jessica, too, grew annoyed at the questions. She thought it quite rude for them to be bombarding them with meaningless queries like they were all interviewers for tabloids. Eventually, though, word apparently got around about the answers to the few more popular questions, or everyone had already managed to come see them, because fewer and fewer people were coming to interrogate as the night grew older.

Tony couldn’t help but to notice the strong smell of the punch when he went to get some for Jessica. Obviously, it had been spiked, and not by anyone experienced, as anyone with half a brain would be able to tell from a mile away. “Why do kids do that?” he wondered aloud as he walked back to his wife empty handed.

“Where’s the punch?” she asked, feeling incredibly parched.

“Spiked. Stupid kids…” He shoved his hands into his pockets and growled under his breath. “Don’t they realize they could get somebody killed like that?”

Jessica patted his arm and said, “Oh, I wouldn’t worry too much. They do that to the punch every year, and no one’s died yet. I was hoping we’d be getting some before they got it, though…” Beaming at him, she wrapped her arms around his and said, “Let’s just leave, okay? It’s kinda boring here, and I’m getting a little tired.”

He nodded and escorted her out to the front of the building and went to get the car. A couple of others were leaving, too, and apparently, from the empty spaces he passed on his way to the car, a few had already left. He wondered briefly if they left for the same destination…

-

They were on the back roads heading for the main road that would take them into town and to the hotel. The air was thick with silence, as neither really knew what to say. Finally, Tony cleared his throat and asked, “So, um, are you okay with what we’re doing?”

“Huh?” Jessica asked, being pulled from her thoughts. “Uh, yeah. I mean, we are married, so I guess it’s okay, right?”

“But,” he said, feeling a little annoyed at the lack of words coming to him, “there’s more to this than just being married. I mean, if that were the only thing we needed, we would’ve already done it, right?”

She nodded and looked out the half opened window. “The night air feels good. This dress is so hot…”

Laughing, he decided to take a leap and reach over to pat her thigh. “Jessica, if you’re not ready, you can say so, okay? I just want to make sure you’re okay with it.”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” she replied, trembling at his touch. After a couple of moments, she picked up his hand and held it, her heart racing.

Tony chanced a glance at her and smiled. That little show of acceptance towards him helped ease his mind and let him know that she really was okay with this, and that she at least liked him a lot. “Well, just so you know, I’m not in it just for the, you know. I want this because… I love you, Jessica.” He looked at her and smiled. “I just wanted you to know that.”

Her heart skipped a beat as she looked at him. It was becoming clear, now. She did love him, but she just couldn’t admit it to herself before because she was too busy questioning her age and teenaged hormones. Why else would she agree? If she just wanted a good time, she had plenty of opportunity before, but she wanted this now, because she loved him. Taking a deep breath, she looked up at his profile and smiled. This was it. This was the moment she would remember for the rest of her life: the moment she finally confessed her love to him.

Tony gazed at the road in front of him and saw a sharp curve coming. The direction it took was nearly completely hidden by trees. He slowed down a bit to take the curve safely and smiled, feeling like he was on top of the world. He could only imagine what he’d be feeling the next morning when he woke up to see his wife’s beautiful face next to his, knowing that she was truly his and he truly hers.

She sighed again and whispered, “Tony?”

“Yes?” he asked, looking at her, keeping sight of the road with his peripheral vision.

“Tony, I…” Before she could finish, something flashy caught her eye. Turning her gaze to the curve ahead, she screamed.

He looked up and, too, saw a sight worth screaming for. There was a pickup truck without its lights on whipping out around the curve on their side of the road and heading for them. Tony slammed his brakes and pulled into the other lane to avoid the crazy driver.

Jessica covered her face, afraid of what she might see if she looked up. The sound of metal crashing against metal rang out through the night, and she was tossed about from the impact. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. Her head slammed into the passenger’s side window, causing pieces of glass to fly outside, and hung outside the car. The truck kept coming, and she could hear Tony cursing in Korean. She opened her eyes and squinted against the wind that was beating against her face and saw the truck coming at her. She pulled her head in, but didn’t get her hair inside the vehicle in time. A strong tug pulled her back out and down. Sharp pain burst at her neck, and she blacked out.

The truck stopped, and so did Tony. Breathing heavily, he reached over and placed his hand on Jessica’s thigh. “Jessica, are you-” He stopped mid sentence as he ran his hand over her leg. It was wet. Wet with warm liquid. His first thought was blood, but his second was that she was so scared, she used the bathroom on herself. Hoping against hope that the second was correct, he reached down and turned on the inside light. “Jessica, don’t be embarrassed…” he said, turning to her. As soon as he did, he went into shock. What had once been his stomach was now a black hole, and it was doing its best to suck in his heart.

Jessica lay there, covered in blood, more spilling as he watched. Her head was half out the broken window, and her hair was pulled tight as though caught on something. Her neck, however, was half severed on the broken glass.

Tony turned away, not sure if he wanted to cry or scream. Stepping out of the car, he stomped over to the driver’s side of the truck and tore open the door. The driver was just sitting there, not looking bothered by what happened. In fact, he wore a smile on his stupid face. Tony reached up, grabbed the boy by the collar, and pulled him down to eye level. “WHAT THE H*LL WERE YOU DOING?!” he shouted, wanting to kill the filth that he held in the worst possible ways known to man.

“Huh? Buddy, waz the probl’m?” asked the boy, his blank, blood shot, grey eyes not seeming to focus on the man before him.

“WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? YOU JUST KILLED MY WIFE, @SSHOLE!” he yelled, shaking the boy.

The driver laughed. He actually laughed! “Ah… Wha’evah…”

Tony threw the boy against the truck and punched him in the gut as hard as he could. The drunk driver doubled over and fell to the ground. Spitting at him, Tony kicked him in the shin, hearing a satisfying crunch of bones being shattered. Hoping that he’d never be able to walk again, he said in a dangerously low voice, “You’d better be glad I’m letting you live, you piece of scum! If I ever see you again, I will kill you, you son of a b*tch!”

Turning around, he walked back to his rental car, crawled into the driver’s side, and lifted Jessica’s hand, placing it on his heart. He tried to speak to her, to tell him that his heart would only belong to her, that he’d never forget her, and that he wished he could have just heard her say, “I love you, too,” even if she were lying, but he couldn’t speak. Every time he tried, his throat closed, making him squeak. Unable to hold them back any longer, the tears began to flow down his face, and he trembled uncontrollably. He dialed 911 and whispered to them where they were, what had happened, and urged them to hurry. It took forever for the police man to get there, it seemed, and by then, Tony had cried all his tears for the night.

Part 12 - Afterword

The next two years were definitely different for Tony. It took him about two months before he was ready to work again. He managed to compose a song dedicated to Jessica about taking advantage of love while it was still there. Sales, of course, were booming, as everyone probably felt sorry for him. He didn’t care, though. Nothing seemed to matter much anymore. Sure, he kept up his appearances, but his heart was still gone.

They still did concerts and came out with albums, but Woo Hyuk and Jae Won noticed the difference. Tony didn’t seem to care anymore. He just did everything in a robotic manner, not really putting any emotion into his work. They didn’t say anything to him, though. They knew he was going through a lot of pain, and they didn't know what to do. They wanted him to know that they were there for him, but they didn't want to remind him of the accident and risk tearing open the slightly healed wound.

Tony, if he had known what they were thinking, would've thanked them. He relieved the crash everyday, wondering if he could've done something more to save her. While no one said anything about it aloud, though, it was easier to forget the accident and just remember her.

Those two years were probably more hectic, though, than any other time in his life. Amongst doing concerts, coming out with albums, and making appearances on random shows, he was campaigning everywhere that would let him against drunk driving. On the second anniversary of Jessica’s death, he decided to speak in Texas where the event happened and hoped to convince many people not to drink and drive.

It was a nice ceremony. There was the usual deal of the picture being hung on the wall and everyone putting candles under it. Tony was truly touched by how many people were there, and how many candles were placed under her picture. He nearly cried, but managed to hold back the tears to speak to the people gathered about his experience with a drunk driver. At the end, they gathered in the reception hall of the college and enjoyed some finger food and punch.

Tony conversed with many different people while he sipped on some punch to wet his dry throat. Among the people were the dean of the college, the principal of the high school Jessica had attended, and her grief-stricken parents. They all talked with him briefly about wonderful memories of Jessica and thanked him for having the courage to come and speak about what had happened. He was just glad no one blamed him for the accident, especially her parents. He hadn't seen them since the funeral, and they weren't to pleased to see him, to say the least. He did notice, however, that they were quick to leave, but that just left room for more people to come talk to him. With each person that came, Tony drank another cup of punch to avoid having nothing to do with his hands.

At the end of the reception, Tony was feeling strange. His vision was blurred, and he had the feeling he wasn’t walking exactly straight. A couple of people asked if he was alright, and he told them not to worry; he just needed rest. On his way out the door, a young man that used a walking stick stopped Tony and said, “Hey, thanks for coming to speak.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah,” Tony muttered, feeling rather dim at the moment as his thoughts stumbled sluggishly through his brain. There was something familiar about this guy.

“Oh, and, no hard feelings, alright?”

“About what?”

“Wasn’t that punch good? Had a certain extra kick to it, if I say so myself.” The man smiled, his grey eyes seeming to shine. “Good day.” With that, he left.

Tony shook his head and left the building, heading for his car. He only wanted to get to the hotel as soon as possible as he wasn’t feeling too well. Starting up the car, he waited for a moment to see if sitting down helped his head and blurred vision, which it didn’t, and backed out of the parking lot. Before he knew it, he was driving down the highway heading for the hotel at 80 miles per hour. Something in the back of his mind told him the speed limit was 60 miles per hour, but he didn’t listen to the nagging thought. He needed to rest now!

As he was driving, he decided to put in a CD. He reached down and pulled a CD from under the unused ash tray and started to put it in the CD player but dropped it. Bending down, he picked it up and put it in the CD player and smiled as music filled the car. He glanced up and saw another vehicle coming right at him. He slammed the break and swerved off the road to avoid a collision and stared dumbfounded as a tree sped toward him. He couldn’t dodge it, though, nor could he stop. The front end of the car collided with the trunk of the tree, sending Tony, who had forgotten to fasten his seat belt, forward. He felt the glass of the windshield break against his head and soon after felt nor saw anything.

He was finally able to be with Jessica again.

---------------

The End.

Kim honey!!
Sorry it took so long for me to reply to your fic! Hhaa
even though i've already read it on msn, i thought i'd reply to it anyway!
haha you sucker for sad endings you. . you wanted to see me and my sis cry right? right? haha aww!!
what i love about your fic is how its so fast-paced - but so interesting at the same time. i can tell from just like the short sentences that you have a brilliant imagination haha. i love the words you use - you're able to orchestrate them into constructive sentences.
i also like how you considered almost everything about the pros and cons of having a younger wife and all - example: the communication barrier, age barrier, stuff like that haha. its good to read about something that seems so realistc - rather than the common cleche type of storylines where everything is so perfect..girl is perfect for boy and all haha.

yeah, everyone probably reckons im being biased because you're my special friend haha, but im not. i'm just saying what i think. hehe. you're so brave to have your fic critqued, haha i'm not brave enough for that!
haha, hope to hear from you soon haha. LOL. and im sorry we havent been able to complete our play yet - haha !! -
