Teen arrested over Sasser virus

German authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of creating the "Sasser" computer virus, which infected thousands of computers worldwide, an official said.

The suspect, a high school student, was arrested on Friday said Frank Federau, a spokesman for the state criminal office in Hanover.

Police and prosecutors searched his parents' house in the northern town of Waffensen, Federau said. He did not release the man's identity, and said he did not immediately have details of how the suspect was tracked down.

German newsweekly Der Spiegel reported that the CIA and FBI also were involved in the hunt for the worm's creator.

The worm raced around the world over the past week, exploiting a flaw in Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Unlike most outbreaks, Sasser does not require users to activate it by clicking on an email attachment. Sasser is known as a network worm because it can automatically scan the internet for computers with the security flaw and send a copy of itself there.

On Monday, the worm hit public hospitals in Hong Kong and one-third of Taiwan's post office branches.

Twenty British Airways flights were each delayed about 10 minutes on Tuesday due to Sasser troubles at check-in desks, while British coast guard stations used pen and paper for charts normally generated by computer.

Home users were particularly hit hard, computer security experts say, because they generally lack the know-how to install patches and tend not to have the firewalls needed to keep Sasser from spreading to other computers via the internet.

Good.
Stupid jerk got caught.

For punishment, inject him with some new virus and let him try to figure out how to cure himself so he doesn't "shut down."

Well, because the virus got into some government computers around the world, I would suspect that he will spend some time in jail, Then Symantec will hire him, and he will make more money in one year, that you and I combined in a lifetime!

Yeah.
Check out Kevin Mitnick now.
He's been involoved with lots of security things for stuff on the net (don't know of any specifics myself).
One of the last things he did was trace some guy who was sending bomb threats in one city and they were able to get a hold of the guy and detain him.

Wow... That's kinda funny when you sit back and think about it. Only one Walmart.com computer in the entire US was working because of that virus, and it just so happened to be the one my dad was working! XD Yeah, my computer was hit as well... He should get punished severely for something that widespread.

I have to wonder why people do stuff like that?

You can be so open minded that your brain falls out.

'Cause my Jesus would never be accepted in my church. The blood and dirt on his feet might stain the carpet.
Finally, someone tells the truth.

Well, in view of the fact that it is some High School student, and not some disgruntled Micro$oft employee, maybe we should learn something from this! I use Mozilla, instead of IE, and Eudora, instead of Outlook, or Outlook Express, just to limit this sort of damage. I just saw that Apple had it FIRST virus, after TWENTY years. Maybe we are lemmings, following the wrong leader???
