Sasser net worm disruption grows
Many versions of Windows are at risk from Sasser
Disruption caused by a new internet virus known as Sasser is showing signs of worsening.

In two separate cases, companies in Taiwan and Finland reported the worm had disrupted their computers.

Sasser, unlike a virus which travels through e-mails and attachments, spreads directly from the internet.

It attacks recent versions of Microsoft's Windows causing the computer to shut down. Experts believe millions of computers may be infected.

Shut down

Taiwan's national post office said a third of its offices had been paralysed by the virus.

The company said it had started to receive complaints from around 10:00 (03:00 BST) that computers in its offices were shutting down and rebooting automatically.

The disruption left customers queuing in long lines at many of the company's offices, according to television reports.

Meanwhile, Finnish bancassurer Samp said it had temporarily closed all of its 130 branch offices as a precaution against Sasser.

In Moscow a computer security firm warned of a possible major epidemic.

Microsoft has acknowledged that the worm is spreading but played down the threat.

"It seems to me an exaggeration to say that millions of computers have been affected," said Bernard Ourghanlian, Microsoft's technical director in France.

Software

Microsoft has made available a software update to fix the flaw and offers a guide to those afflicted on its website page www.microsoft.com/security.

Sasser attacks recent versions of Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

The computer has to be rebooted several times but appears to suffer no lasting damage.

"Worst affected will be small and medium-sized businesses that don't have the resources to update their anti-virus software," said Mark Grady, principal consultant at IT consultants Intraliant.

"Large corporations have the time and money and will have updated their patches," Mr Grady said.

A Microsoft patch was released on 13 April and revised on 28 April.

Internet users have been warned that they are more likely to get the virus the more they surf the web.

The virus is picked up by clicking on any one of a number of sites.

The worm is the third major internet infection after Mydoom in January and Bagle in February but computer experts are saying that unlike previous ones it does not appear to damage the hard drive.

It's much worse than I expected. A local travel agency is getting TWO MILLION HITS PER HOUR, we got 1200 in the last 24 hours, here.

Do be careful.
And some of the viruses knock out other viruses.Sort of a competition between the hackers...

Here is the latest on it, from today, Tuesday. This is from www.news.myway.com (via Durdgereport.com)

By Bernhard Warner, European Internet Correspondent

LONDON (Reuters) - The rapidly evolving "Sasser" computer worm tore across the Internet Tuesday, hitting corporate and home computers and stoking fears worse may be to come.

First detected over the weekend, the worm has already infected, by some estimates, over one million PCs. Among its victims are banks, travel-booking systems, European Commission offices and Britain's 19 Coastguard stations.

"We've had to go back to plotting on paper charts rather than using the computer mapping system," said a UK Maritime and Coastguard spokeswoman.

Search and rescue operations however have not been affected since Sasser first attacked its computers Tuesday.

Unlike previous Internet worms, Sasser infects vulnerable PCs without any action by the user like opening attachments, allowing it to spread very quickly.

Home users would likely first notice an infection if their computer mysteriously rebooted or their Internet connection slowed dramatically.

Security experts were warning users to update their PCs with the latest Microsoft patches and to install a firewall to keep out future infections.

With businesses throughout parts of Europe returning from the long holiday weekend Tuesday, anti-virus technicians were expecting a new wave of infections.

"It's still going steady. It will be a big problem for a day or two, then it will linger on the Internet for weeks, and likely years," said Mikko Hypponen, Anti-Virus Research Director at Finnish data security firm F-Secure.

WHERE NEXT?

Security experts are analyzing the worm to determine where Sasser might hit next.

"We don't know yet, for example, if it attacks machines running on Windows XP Embedded, which runs ATM machines and cash registers. That would be disastrous for banks and retailers," said Raimund Genes, European president of security software firm Trend Micro.

In the space of three days, four variants have emerged, each capable of causing machines that run on Microsoft's Windows operating systems XP, NT and 2000 to reboot without warning and knocking out some computer reservation systems.

Victims include Goldman Sachs, Australia's Westpac Bank and Finnish financial company Sampo. It has also hit about 300,000 computers at Germany's Deutsche Post.

Staff were temporarily unable to issue cash over the counter as a result, German media reported, while a European Commission spokesman said Sasser hit 1,200 PCs Monday.

"We had big problems yesterday," the EC spokesman said.

Sasser attacks an exploit in Windows known as the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service, or LSASS, which had been targeted in a Microsoft security update released on April 13.

F-Secure's Hypponen said the emergence of a related e-mail virus Monday called Netsky.AC may hold clues to the authorship of Sasser. Netsky.AC carries an attachment purporting to fix Sasser infections.

Since spotting Netsky.AC, Hypponen and other security officials suspect Sasser was programmed by a group believed to be based in Russia calling itself the "Skynet anti-virus group."

The way that I read this, Angelo, is that simply being on line can spread the virus. It isn't necessarily AIM. And in fact, I suspect that AOL (owners of AIM) are probably extremely vigilent about ANYTHING spreadding through their service. They've already had a lot of bad publicity.
Here is my simple suggestion:
Update and run Norton Antivirus every day. Note that this program is not free. There are freewares that can help some, Stinger, Spybot, and Adaware are programs that I run here. But Norton is mandatory.
