HI Cina, This is a cultural thing. Most "Westerners" do not remove their shoes. To prevent (as much as possible) dirt from entering the house, they place mats in front of the door, that you are to wipe your shoes on. It is not intended out of rudeness, simply ignorance. What you might do, is to place a nicely done sign, on your front door, saying: Please remove your shoes, before entering. Thanks!" This is a cultural thing, and with the variety of mixed cultures here in the US, it isn't the ordinary thing to do. What you will probably find, is that most people will comply out of respect --though many will ask. Some will comply, but will display annoyance, and some will ignore the sign. In this case, expect that they didn't see it, and remind them. If they further resist, add, "Well, the sign's in English, Habla espanol??" Which is a sort of humorous way of saying "FU". (technically, it is Spanish, asking them if that is the language they speak.) //Seoul |

Aey DNAngel/Cina, Takin' off our shoes is an asian thing. Western ppl keep shoes on. Aniwaz, takin' off our shoes is like the unwritten asian law LoL. I'm so use to takin' off my shoe, but if ppl come to our house and are not asian (cuz asians take off shoes) my mom always tell them take off shoes before they could take another step in our house. LoL! :yayaya: |

well to tell you the truth.. Canada takes their shoes off too. no one walks around the house in shoes... if there is a need to do such we buy slippers for indoor use only. LOL~! so now you cant say "Westerners" dont take them off~! every home i have been in, in Canada.. you take your shoes off. no one wants shoe tracks all over their carpets. to take them off is common sence here. i guess its a U.S. thing. i see it on T.V all the time and it really irks me too. i cant stand the thought of somone wearing their shoes on my carpet. *shivers* |

hehe. . .aww! *pat pat* cina hehe. hrms. . i always take my shoes off when i enter someones house. it feels so disrespectful to walk in with your dirty shoes. but sometimes the tiles are like really dirty in the house, so they depending on who it is we're visiting, they tell us to wear our shoes in so we do. =) |

Umm no lol Ion even take my shoes off in my house. I'm familiar with that cultural courtesy tho. My brother's best friend is Laos, and he says he has to do that at his house. But I never knew it was about keepin the house clean. So, nope, not here. |

its definitely a cultural thing....i would expect to take off my shoes when entering a household of asian ethnicity, so as to respect their culture...but i would not assume it, if the household is in the US, i would ask, or observe first...i think |

Vic, you would definitely get the lead role on the comedy. I on the other hand, would get the lead role on the Horror one. lol I may not take my shoes off, but, when i visit some relatives of mine, not only i cannot take my shoes off, but i can't sit on their sofa either. If i ever did take my shoes off, they be like "Boy put them back!". lol |
