There is an old saying, "There has not a day when winds cease". It is not known who came up with it, but it is a perfect way to define this year's turbulence concerning the Gayo industry. There has been many events that occured this year which has gone into a dark tunnel of decreasing trends since last year.

From the shocking 30 years old gasoo nude release, the legal attacks to the online service markets, and the Lee Hyori syndrome that shook the whole mass media and Korean culture, there have been many incidents and scandals colouring the year 2003.

Numbers took a big role this year, and there is no better way to describe the journey of the Gayo industry this year than to use numbers.

+ 0: A year without any million sellers.

A 'million seller' is a symbol to represent a true top singer and the country's music industry structure. Until 2001, the Gayo industry produced million sellers each year. In 1999, Jo Sung Mo and HOT; in 2000, there were Jo Sung Mo, Seo Taiji, and god. In 2001, it was Kim Gun Mo's and god's turn to sold a million copies each. However, in 2002, not one artist was able to break the million mark. The dark shadows loomed into 2003, with the highest sale numbers were not even made it to 600,000 copies.

+ 3: "I will be back!" A salsa queen's return after 3 years.

Dance artist Baek Ji Young was not far from the top, when in late 2000 a video scandal involving her shocked the industry. She then announced her leave from the music industry. When she left, very few thought that she would return. However, after 3 years since Baek Ji Young's tearful press conference, she successfully made a dramatic comeback. In September, she returned with her song 'Smile', dancing and singing more passionately than she had 3 years ago, showing a dignified woman who did not yield to her shackles.

+ 4: 4 stars who defended their musical pride amidst depression.

Of all the albums released, there are 4 artists who has or is expected to sell over 400,000 copies of their albums until the end of 2003. Kim Gun Mo with his 8th album is forecasted to sell over 600,000 copies by the end of the year. Strong female soloist Lee Soo Young has also broken the 400,000 mark, being the top selling female artist of the year. The man who has frequently sold more than a million copies, Jo Sung Mo, has also sold over 400,000 copies. Wheesung, who released his 2nd album will certainly sell over 400,000 copies this year.

+ 7: The lucky number which shook the hearts of all the young girl in Asia, 'Se7en'.

Among all the many new artists this year, there is no one to surpass Se7en, real name Choi Dong Wook. With his R&B flavoured ballad, 'Come To Me', he was in the headlines and sold over 200,000 copies of his first album. He also earned over 1 uk won (approx. US$ 800,000) in various commercials, creating a 'top model' title to add onto his musical fame. In order to respond the demands from Asian music industry, Se7en released an album in Thailand, where within just one week it has been sold for over 100,000 copies.

+ 10: "I can seduce any man in 10 minutes", the Lee Hyori syndrome.

Originated from popular female group FinKL, Lee Hyori tried the path of being a soloist. She gained so much popularity that the title 'syndrome' was applied to her. In particular, her sexy image and her honest personality made her favourable to not only fans from the male gender, but also female fans. Her popularity was reflected upon portal site 'Daum', where this year's most popular search word 'Lee Hyori' was second to 'Lotto'.

+ 35: Jo Yong Pil, to him 35 years is only a number.

One of Korea's greatest musicians, Jo Yong Pil held a large concert on August 30 to celebrate his 35 years of music. Although the concert titled 'The History' went against the heavy rain, the highlight of the night is described "the best performance effect was his voice." Jo Yong Pil passionately sang that night in front of 80 thousand people.

+ 38: A dance queen's 38 day of disappearance.

A singer of 17 years, veteran artist Kim Wan Son created a stir after her sudden departure to the Philippines on July 6. Rumours were spreading that she was filming nude while she was overseas and her management company took legal action acting in strong repulsion. However when she returned on July 12, Kim Wan Son remained veiled and on the 24th got caught up in a scandal. On August 5, her management company brought out a contract termination testimony and on the 12th the rumours of the nude project became official. The favourable active artists of this year: Lee Hyori, Lee Soo Young, Lee Ki Chan, Sung Shi Kyung, Kangta, Shin Hyesung, and Lee Ji Hoon, all have something in common. They are all of the same age, born in 1979 and each have stylish appearances, special individuality and a strong fan background aiding them to have a strong influence on the music industry.
