solid07.net- July 12, 2003 Music Industry Fights Back -- riceball Posted Image Featuring a lineup that would rival that of the 2003 F* Concert a news conference was held at Seoul’s 63 Building protesting against illegal music sites on July 9. With the backing of more than 100 prominent gasoos including GOD, Shinhwa, Seven, UN, Lim Chang Jung, Koyote, Ock Ju Hyun, Boa, Moon Hee Jun, Jadu, Park Jin Young, Lee Soo Young, Cool, Jang Nara, Click-B, Cherry Filter, Lee Ki Chan, Yurisangja, Jewelry, NRG, Eugene, Kim Hyun Sung, Chakra and Fly to the Sky among others the music industry made it’s stance clear on Internet sites offering their music without their consent. Free digital music has been a hot topic of late not only in Korea but abroad as well with continuing questions and arguments about copyright and such. The motivating factor behind the gasoos angry stance this time is the continuing fall of record sales. According to early estimates 2003 will be the fifth straight year record sales will decline from the previous year. With the wake of record low sales record companies started an aggressive campaign that shut down most Korean mp3 sites beginning last year. However with sales still dwindling gasoos decided to target new sources at the July 9 press conference including streaming services. P2P and file exchange services were also sources of criticism. Fans especially were encouraged to avoid using illegal sites and even the Korean government was a target for not protecting their public interests. One particular site that has been getting a lot of heat lately is www.bugsmusic.co.kr which offers the largest database of Korean streaming music available on the Net. “What we want is for the music sites to offer their services with our permission,” said male gasoo Lee Seung Chul. Follow up news: Male group Shinhwa terminated their contract with GBM (Goban Media) and signed a new contract with Good Entertainment their management company. Good Entertainmend announced the signing on July 11. Terms of the new contract were not disclosed. Shinhwa broke terms with GBM after a promised amount of money wasn’t provided for. The GBM contract which was signed just last month called for 3.5 million in US dollars in return for 2 regular albums and 1 special album. According to the terms of the contract GBM was supposed to pay $1.5 million by June 30 before paying the rest after the 2nd regular album was released. However GBM only handed over $1 million which was borrowed from a personal investor. Shinhwa members instead decided to return the 1 million and cancel the contract. “Good Entertainment is a company made up by managers that have been with us since our SM days so we feel very comfortable working with them,” said member Kim Dong Wan. For this year however the group’s members will be doing activities separately. Shin Hye Sung is currently working on a project album to be released next month while Lee Minwoo will be releasing a solo album in the fall. Meanwhile both Kim Dong Wan and Jun Jin are expected to concentrate on acting in the second half of the year. Their 7th group album will be released early next year. More news: Rock group Cherry Filter will be leaving for Japan today July 11 to record their 3rd album. “We are planning to include a more intimate, enjoyable sound than the last album,” said female lead vocalist Jo Yoo Jin. The four member group are expected to stay in the island country until mid-August with the new album to be released later that month. Cherry Filter first made headlines last year with 2nd album title song “Sweet Little Kitty.” More follow up news: Finkl member Lee Hyori denied constant rumors that she got breast implants on the KBS show “Happy Together” when asked about it on July 10. She also said she didn’t have any surgery around her hip area. Hyori who’s working on a solo album has been practicing for her solo debut for 6 months now. Unlike fellow member Ock Ju Hyun Hyori will concentrate on dance tracks a la Boa’s “Valenti” and “No.1” The album’s release date in the meantime has been delayed from late July to early August. Concert news: JTL will stage their 1st major concert on August 13-15 in commemoration of their 2nd album release. Almost $500,000 will be invested on the event which will be held at Seoul’s Jamshil Stadium for 2 hours each of the 3 days. “Even though we have been busy preparing for the concert while finishing work on the new album we we’ll try our best to put on the best live show,” said member Tony An. Word has it that the server went down after about 100,000 people tried to buy tickets online when they were first made available on the Net on July 4. New album release: Lena Park who recently had to cancel her July Southeastearn Asia concert tour because of SARS instead released a live concert album in countries like Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong besides Korea. She will be performing “Ann” a new song from the 2 CD 26 track album until August before returning to New York City to attend Columbia University and work on her 5th album to be released early next year. Lena Park also released a separate package featuring a 2 hour concert DVD along with the album. Also a shorter 40 minute special DVD was released worth about US $3. Another charge: Taiwanese group Energy has been accused by Kpop fans again this time for plagiarizing Seven’s hit song “Come Back To Me.” Energy’s recently released “Some Year, Some Month, Some Day” was juged by Seven fans to be too similar to Seven’s song. It was also mentioned that Energy had been the same group who had copied Shinhwa and JTL before. However YG Entertainment revealed on July 11 that Energy were given permision to remix the song and use it as their own as they did to 1TYM’s “One Love” and “1TYM” before |
