| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

Dusk was already falling at the edges of the woods, Norwood and the local swamp covered in slowly thickening darkness. The trees around the wizard had begun to take on strange, twisted shapes made terrifying to the average Imythessian by their overactive imaginations. Drax, however, was far from scared. He was more curious than anything, in fact, as he led a small party deep into the heart of the nightmarish forest known as the Spiderhaunt Woods. Thick webs seemed to grow from the dark trunks of the trees and moss wasn't the only thing covering the ground as the searchers quietly moved through the gloom. Dragons were fabled creatures of impressive might and unbelievable magical power, but their intelligence was akin to that of many sentient races and therefore made them second only to the gods. Yet recently, tales of terrifying spider-like beings roaming these evil-flooded woods had reached the wizard's keen ears. They were not true spiders, so the tales said, but something far more sinister. Giant spiders and spiders' victims alike had been murdered by these foul things. This, then, was a quest for knowledge. Curious about the new creatures, which were said to move like silent dragons swooping down on their own kind, Drax had every intention of finding out as much about these creatures as possible. He had learned from a very frightened old woman who'd apparently only barely escaped with her life - at the cost of her son, she kept saying over and over - that others had spotted these things as well. Of course, the fact that she dissolved into horrible sobs every time the subject of her son came up meant that he'd spent an hour just getting that much out of her. Two hours had yielded him the name "arachna drake". That was the name given to them by another victim, a former soldier who could no longer defend Cascadia because he'd lost his leg when he chased an assassin into these woods. And so he had gotten together a party of some local adventurers. One was quite mad and it had taken quite a serious discussion to get him to stop trying to kill the man. There was an egg in it for him - Ogichi, he was called - if they could find an arachna drake's nest. Just one, though; taking a couple eggs wouldn't be harmful to the species, whereas taking an entire nest might just get them both killed. Of course, Asteria was supposed to meet the pair of them at the entrance to the woods. Naturally, she was fashionably late. They had started without her, but he had left clear markers to show her where they had gone. If she decided to follow, so be it. Fire would be useful if they did indeed find one of these seemingly fantastic creatures. With any luck, Drax would find one of the huge eggs and and be able to train his own arachna drake. If he could do that, he would undoubtedly have an invaluable living weapon. |

Nothing too interesting, or really much at all, those were the only things that Ogichi really saw in the Spiderhaunt woods, boredom. It seemed to creep, growing in power as they continued forward with nothing to really kill. Sure, there were some small spiders scattered around the trees and webs that they had created, but it didn’t bring forth the sweet satisfaction that came from taking the life one holds so dear, and cutting it into little bite sized pieces for the vultures to worry about. There had been promise of killing something that Ogichi had so far missed even spotting chances to kill. It was something akin to a dragon, and those scaly beasts holding the intellect they did, perhaps its demise would bring about the same joy. So far, however, there had been no joy, no pain, no misery, only the everlasting and ever-haunting boredom which engulfed the demon’s body such as poison did to a spider’s victim. “I think I hate you… no, I’m pretty certain. You led me in here with the promise to kill something, I hate you.” Ogichi said, breaking the repeating monotony of silence in between the constant and ever-present sounds of footsteps against what could be considered by some as the ground. It was nothing more than water mixed with mud and the ever-taunting silence that came with predators waiting for their prey to come to them. “In fact, and I don’t want you to miss or even mistake this in any way, shape or form. I am most likely going to try to kill you when we get out of here, purely out of spite and hatred for you, I might add.” His tone was absolutely unpleased, completely and utterly without joy in this dark and depressing place. Perhaps it wouldn’t be nearly as depressing with a few bodies nailed to a few of these practically black trees. Then there would be no more than a simple feeling of jealousy that one would not only get to kill people, but then flaunt it as both a warning and a series of trophies scattered throughout. Alas, there was none of that. The rat-man that lived not too far from here probably ate his victims anyways. Ogichi began to wonder why he and the rat-man had never gotten to go ahead and find some camp of poor, unlucky souls to kill. After all, they had both survived the night, and it was a fun night anyways. What was his name again? The white fiend couldn’t remember if he had told him his name or not. While he followed the wizard he currently hated, he now found a bit of solace in his thoughts, trying to figure out if he had ever learned of the rat-person’s name. He had ended up liking it, although getting dragged through a marsh by a magical flying sleigh was a bit odd, it was still a very interesting experience. |

Somehow, despite all the terrible things and a gigantic fear of spiders herself, Asteria managed to end up in Spiderhaunt Woods. The fire genasi took her time getting to the entrance, doing whatever she needed to be done during the day first. But, all things had to end, and she soon ran out of jobs besides this one. With a sigh, she dropped off all her tools for her fireworks and headed off to the mouth of the forest, only to find a trail with no men in sight. Her wizardly friend and that strange man-demon-thing or something had gone off without her, and she let out a strong string of curses. Of course men had to be so impatient. Of course, they had to let the damsel to herself. Of course they had to leave a trail leading into a wood chock full of insects and bugs and all that disgusting stuff. And, above all, of course Asteria's heart took over her head. She wanted to be with them, and standing outside of the woods by herself started to freak her out. What good did love give you? A handful of broken bones and one messed up head. She wasn't even sure why she like this guy in the first place. Fear wrought her bones as she took her first step into the forest, so it was unlikely she was going to spend all her time thinking about love when her life was at stake. Little light shined down to light the path, so she brought out her lantern to find her way to the men. The tension seem to grow around her, the dark shadows looming in front, the trees closing in behind. She stuck to the path they made of arrows and little notes. Slashes from a blade and the air of magic held around her. She was so absorbed into this search and find, she barely noticed the soft scuttling behind her. It was too late when it struck. A spider came out of nowhere and it screeched its eerie cry. It was huge, stood at least two feet above her head, and had the most vicious looking teeth in the world. She stared into eight glowing eyes before the fire genasi turned and ran. It threw sparks at the thing, making it squeal, before dashing off and whipping through the trees. The only thing that made her stop was when she slammed into something white. For a flash, she thought she was in spider's web and started up her spark again. It was but cloth from the clothes of a demon, the one who happened to be following the wizard that had controlled her heart. |

Distant chittering rang loud in the wizard's ears, the voices of spiders throughout the woods echoing like sinister laughter. The demonic one's words made the wizard scoff mentally, his sneer silent amid the twisted blackness of the woods. Already dark as they were in the thick of the forest, Drax's eyes had adjusted well to the darkness and shadows. But his face was a black spot with a hat atop it and strange tendrils of what might be equally black hair dangling about his cheeks to anyone who didn't have natural darkvision or another way to see in the dark. But his reply never came, for a distant scream made the wizard halt. He listened carefully. Hiding among the treeline came something he recognized and it made him scowl. Morgis was not supposed to leave the tower unless it was urgent, but apparently he had sensed danger in store for his master. At least he had brought the wizard's staff of air. The dark umbra kit was hiding near some dead-looking bushes; they weren't dead, though - they just needed blood instead of water. That was the odd thing about bloodbushes: the more blood they were drenched in, the larger and fuller they became. At full strength, they seemed to almost come alive and one could sometimes hear them whispering on a still, dry night - or so the rumors said. Drax had heard them a couple of times in the past, though he wasn't sure if it was indeed them or just the illusion of them. Back to the present, he snatched the staff up and whirled about just as his girlfriend apparently slammed into the back of his companion. The creature he sought came out and stopped, seeming to ponder the travelers. It appeared to be analyzing the situation, and then pulled back into the shadows. It was darting amongst the trees, keeping to the shadows, keeping just out of sight - but not out of range of Drax's keen ears. He was a hunter by nature, though he used magic instead of a bow. "It's smart. It's not going to attack us while we're together." But was it smart enough to get them apart? Only time would tell. For now, they would have to be alert until it chose to show itself again. They were not here to kill the thing, though the thought did cross Drax's mind. If he learned enough about it, perhaps he would end its miserable life and dissect it; for now, though, they would just have to be patient. "Not yet, anyway. Let's keep moving. Keep your wits about you." He looked directly at his girlfriend as he said this, though he held out his arm as though to welcome her into it should she find comfort by his side. He shot Morgis a look and the kit hung its head in shame. He knew he'd disobeyed. But it didn't matter now; besides, perhaps he could be somewhat useful. Again, only time would tell. |

Ogichi considered the fact the being that led him into this obnoxiously boring place didn’t respond, and then just ignored it, returning to the boredom he was currently experiencing, looking to the dreary tree line for nothing more than a change in what he saw. Unfortunately it still didn’t distract him from the sheer air disinterest he held for this place. He wanted to kill the wizard, but then he wouldn’t be able to kill something like a Drake. If he got lucky, there might be a giant spider before then, something to break the monotony of travel which seemed severely intent on driving him even madder than he already was. Suddenly it was broken as something essentially crashed into him, catching him off-guard and forcing him to trip on what passed as ground. He forward, cancelling out the effects of the trip, and then looked back to see what it was. Under normal circumstances, he would’ve tried to kill whatever it was right now, but he knew they were expecting a third person to join them, so he was exercising a great deal of restraint by not immediately striking at the person. Too much for his comfort, but at least he wasn’t bored at the moment, his mind too caught up in the interest of what hit him. It was some woman. The third member, Ogichi guessed, had finally arrived. Maybe she would at least speak more. Ogichi let out a sigh, he was sort of hoping that the bump would have come from some beast prepared to die. OR not, whichever was fine with him. At least he took comfort in knowing that he could kill the next creature that came across them without hesitation, and he would do so with such great joy and relief, it might even scare him a bit! He sat there, uninterested, unquestioning of her appearance. Unquestioning of her late arrival; he was too busy hearing something else, a rustling within the shrubbery of this damned place. The wizard said it would not attack them if they stayed together, but for the safety of all of them, it might seem a bit better if Ogichi didn’t stay. IF he were to have to go much further without killing something, he would start trying to kill them. He shot a sneer towards the wizard, resisting the urge to flip him off and insult him. It didn’t last long though. “Screw you. You drag me into a boring forest; tell me not to kill you and some other person that’s late. Leave marks or not, I don’t care how long this takes, whatever that is, is going to die!” HE did flip the wizard off for no more than a second while he said that before turning and going into the dark of the woods, not too far from them, as the creature didn’t seem to be going far. It was stalking them, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. Ogichi was going to let it try to attack him, and then it was going to die. Simple as that. |

As soon as she crashed into the demon, she scrambled back, huffing and puffing. Looking into those eerie eyes made her scream involuntarily, as they reminded her of a wanted person in the news she had heard a few years ago. Bloodlust seemed to dance about the man. It scared Asteria, badly enough for her hands to create sparks around her. But, control took over as she caught Drax's eye. The girl was frightened into silence as the demon started to speak. It wasn't long before she scrambled up in the middle of his sentence, and ran to her boyfriend's open arms. The demon had just about finished his talk when she snuggled close to the purple robes, shivering in fear. It was if she had gone back two decades. The woods always scared her, not the actual darkness itself but the possibility of burning it down. But these woods were an exception. The darkness and the thought of burning it down scared her, as she would hate to be attacked by enraged animals in the middle of an inferno. The pure terror of almost being eaten live by a spider made her tremble even more, and it was easy to crouch down in fear besides the tall wizard. If it had been any other situation, it would have been terribly embarrassing. But, this was what fear did to people, and Asteria was no exception. She continued to shake, staying close to Drax's side. She wondered if they should go after the demon, or not. The demon scared her in the first place, as any person with bloodlust would. Softly, in a whispered easily drowned out by any rattle of the leaves, she asked, "Who is that? What is a demon doing here? And why is he insulting you?" |

"A murderer with no patience for research. I hired him for added protection. Clearly, I made a mistake. Come. We must find the nest quickly." A murderer. Cold blood. That was the term used, was it not? The wizard was one to talk. He was hardly innocent of "cold-blooded" murder himself. How many men had he put into the ground, men that thought they owned the world and could do what they wanted without consequence? How many men had he proven to be nothing more than small-minded fools who thought they owned the dice that controlled their fate. But it was men like Drax that really played the cards well, who played people like a game and watched as their security crumbled. Security was an illusion. Insecurity was weakness. Where then did the balance lie? In deception, of course. One was only as secure as the illusion they created and only as insecure as they allowed themselves to be. That was why Drax was so secure: he had no illusions for himself, only for others. And when others' broke through his illusions, rare though that was, he always had a trap waiting. And behind that trap was a plan, an ultimate agenda he'd told no one. Behind each plan was a contincency plan for escape, and he always had several doors to go through in his contingency plan. That was just how his mind worked. He was always scheming. Did that make him a bad guy? No. It just made him smart. That's why he allowed the monster to go off after the spider. He knew there were several here, several that he had scouted out through his familiars and his magic. He had studied them only from afar, however; he wanted to study the arachna drakes up close. He also wanted one of their eggs. It would give him the chance to study them from the cradle to the grave. It would also give him a deadly weapon. That's why he ushered his girlfriend along, knowing full well that he had more weapons - and deadlier weapons - than the monster he was working with, the madman he'd hired as a distraction more than as an actual bodyguard, could ever dream of. "Let's go, Asteria. We have work to do." |

The creature was probably just some large spider, some large spider that was going to die very soon, Ogichi just needed to decide how he was going to do it exactly. Was he going to go with the proven and classic by slicing it down the middle, would he drive his sword through its head? Or would he experiment, cutting the beast apart, starting with its leg, the its abdomen then its head, listening to it scream it final bouts of pain as it would experience its limbs being dethatched piece by miniscule piece. Ogichi had never heard such a beast scream, it should prove to be a very interesting and entertaining experience. Besides, why stick with the old when you’ve found something new to play with. The only problem was that Ogichi found pleasure in breaking the things he “played” with. He heard a noise, a rustling amongst shrubbery and leaves; the thing had to be close. There was even a small and light chattering sound, one which belonged to most predator insects. It sounded sort of like a high-pitched clicking sound. Ogichi smiled, his blade maneuvering and straightening itself into what seemed to be a katana. The Morphing Blade almost seemed to be alive and almost as excited about the kill to come as its wielder was. For a while, there was little more than rustling sounds, and Ogichi tightened his grip on the handle of the blade. Had his skin been any other pigment, his knuckles would be as white as they currently are, all he had to do was wait. The crazed demon didn’t have to wait long as the large arachnid came from above and landed on him, pinning him down with its legs as it’s mandibles neared his neck. He wasn’t going to allow it the pleasure, though. His sword changed and melded to his arm, taking the form of an arm-blade and slicing through one of the beast’s eight legs. The creature was caught by surprise, it let out a loud shrill scream as I took a step back, allowing Ogichi enough navigation to blink forth away from the beast. He stood up straight, now free from the beast’s clutches as his sword retook its normal form of a katana. The smile from the white demon’s face didn’t dissipate in the slightest, if anything it actually got wider. He began the tapping of his blade against his shoulder. The beast was sneaky, but it wasn’t exactly smart. Ogichi was reckless, but he could think things through. He didn’t like losing against things, and he loved to end a fight in death. “You’re some kind of damn sneaky bug, huh?” Ogichi exclaimed as he pointed his blade towards the beast, uncaring whether or not it understood him. “Doesn’t matter, I suppose. All things die anyways, and I love to be the cause!” He shouted as he charged the beast, fully prepared to enact his polan. In the trees, there was little more than a near-deafening shrill scream, then silence. Whatever had happened cause some creature a great amount of pain. The scream was accompanied by a grim feeling to those who would notice it. |

The first shriek made her cower closer to Drax, her cheek brushing against his robes. He could probably feel her terror as she clung to him. This was getting bad. This was getting really bad. When a fire genasi got scared, especially an insane one, anything could catch on fire very quickly. She had an animal urge to bolt. It was hard on her when she was scared. It was the second scream that made her jolt away from Drax's side and in front of him. Her hands started sparking again, as well as her hair. Fear sparkled in her eyes as wild as the flames about her palms. She hissed at her friend, backing off from the noise. "I trust you and all, Drax. I trust you a lot. But I'm not going any further with a homicidal demon behind me trying to stab me in the back and spiders that are will to tear me apart ahead in this woods. Tell me. Why are you trying to kill me?" Little did she know there was a growling beast behind her. Before she could continue, two very large vine-like arms came out of nowhere and snatched her away and through the bushes. She couldn't have gone very far, but she was not on the ground anymore. The next thing she knew, she was attached to something rather sticky. The same substance bounded her arms to the net she was caught in. Or was it a net? Asteria craned her neck to see where she was. The only thing that caught her eyes was the beady red glow of a huge spider. Her spark was slowly burning away the net-thing, but not fast enough if the spider was hungry. |

The wizard tried to grab his girlfriend, but he was not quick enough to do so. His face took on an almost stern look, for he knew he would have to relieve her of her fear if they were to continue. But Drax didn't have time to respond as something grabbed her from behind, appearing almost out of thin air with blinding speed. It disappeared into the trees, but that was hardly the end of it. By the time it was gone, Drax was already halfway into a tree nearby. He got into a good position just as they drake was about to finish her off. At last...there it was. The arachna drake. It was beautiful in its hideous appearance, in the power and speed it displayed - a true work of art, a masterpiece of nature. It was an even more perfect predator than a typical spider - it had to be - and that was saying something. It squealed as something struck at one of its legs, driving it back. Kit though it still was, Morgis knew that he had to do something. He ducked away as the drake turned toward the little umbra, just in time for Drax's staff to let loose an electrically-charged magic missile. One of its eyes was burned, practically exploding as the attack hit home, and it screeched. It turned and ran. So, it was a coward then. That meant several things. It meant that it was probably either concerned with its own life or that of its eggs. If it had eggs, that meant they must be nearby - he hoped. Climbing down quickly as he marked his girlfriend's position, he came to the point just beneath her and stretched out his arms. When she fell, he would catch her. Then he would allay her fears and move on to seek the eggs. |

The beast which Ogichi had slaughtered was no more a creature to be worried; it was nothing more than a dismembered body lying on the cold dark ground of the Spiderhaunt Woods. It had proven to be an interesting experience to kill the beast, but it wasn’t as powerful as Ogichi had hoped for. Oh well, whether or not it had any ability to fight was now moot, the thing was killed, Ogichi’s boredom subsided, and eight long legs were thrown over a shoulder. Not only had he eliminated the boredom that was coming to drive him into randomly attacking those he travelled with, he had also found food if any were hungry. It wasn’t too hard for him to recall sparks that had come from the girl’s hands when she ran into the white fiend; she could cook the legs for them to eat. Ogichi had only been going forth at a leisurely pace, until he heard the scream of some beast similar to that of the one he had just killed. HE rushed forward, not with any concern for the lives of his current “allies” but for the worry he might miss a fight, and the chance to get the spider meat cooked. He arrived a moment after the beast left, his sword in front of him and readied to strike if the creature had still been there, and the eight spider legs simply because he was starting to get rather hungry. He wasn’t particularly happy to find no sign of the screaming creature, only of the being he said he hated, and the woman which had run into him earlier, caught by the web of some spider creature. Ogichi’s sword lowered in dismay, as did his face. “Damn, can’t believe I missed a fight!” Was his only comment on the situation, but at least it kept true to his personality. He couldn’t really care less if one or both of them died, he wasn’t exactly fond of people in general, and as far as he was concerned, they were lucky to still be alive while around him. Had it been his choice, they would both be dead, and whatever creature they were killing would be dead along with them. “Whenever you get down from there, I got food!” He said with a bit of pride as he flaunted the spider-legs over his shoulder. He was happy, so they either might get to live longer, or might get killed. It depended on what kind of happy he was. |

Oh great, Mr. Homicidal Maniac is back. She grumbled to herself as she patiently burned away the sticky web that clung onto her. She couldn't believe all he wanted to do was fight, kill, and make things die. What a suckish motivation. she thought as she narrowed her eyes and curled up to burn away her other hand. This man had no heart, though, again, most people coming from the realm of shadows and demons didn't. Which meant her grandparents were an extraordinary exception and more than half as loony compared to whatever came out of those dark realms. Her other hand was free and she reached down to Drax. Nope, she was too high up. It was nice to know that somebody other than her family cared about her well being, or at least noticed her well being. As for the demon, she would appreciate it if Drax told him off. It was then that she noticed the eight legs slung over his shoulder. Hairy, spider legs. Acid crept up her throat and she nearly coughed up on her boyfriend. Taking her mind off of things, she realized her left leg was now free. Onto her right leg. As she burnt off the web, her mind went back to the thing that caught her. Lucky enough, Drax had scared it away, whatever it was. But, according to her memory, as well as her boyfriend's face, it was not a regular giant spider, if you could even call that normal. It was something between a lizard and those hairy eight legged creatures. Was that what they were searching for? Because Asteria was in bad luck if they were. Finally, her right leg was free. She free-fell into space, executed a half-summersault, and landed in a crouch just beyond Drax's arms. She did take the chance to catch his hand and pull herself up, seeing he was anchored and ready to catch her. Moving the hair out of her eyes, she warily glared at the demon, before turning to the wizard. "That was... interesting. Where are we headed off to now? Or are we... going after... that?" |

The wizard's eyebrows shot up as he watched the impressive display of agility. She could deftly move, that was for certain; yet she was clumsy. Oh, well. It didn't have to make sense. Suffice to say she was good enough to look at and get into bed with that he could care less about her lack of dexterity. She did put her hand in his, however, and he smiled as he helped her up; he kissed her hand before slowly letting it go, a look into her eyes clearly displaying his relief that she was just fine. His smile faded as the maniac mentioned food, however. "I'll pass," Drax replied dryly. Turning to his girlfriend, he nodded in reply to her question. "Yes. That's exactly what we're searching for. If the beast is anything like dragons, it is intelligent and could prove valuable in magical experiments. Also, if I can get my hands on one of its eggs, it could prove to be a devastating weapon against those who would stand against me." The latter, of course, was the primary purpose of his coming here. But the research was nice, too. He spoke to both of his companions at once with his next words, though he had a feeling his girlfriend wouldn't want to be a part of this for very much longer. "You're each welcome to an egg, of course; if they're anything like dragons, they'll lay several at a time." |

“Whatever we do, how about we do it now? I feel boredom setting back in, and if it stays for too long, one of you is going to die, unless the other sticks up for the first, in which case you might both die. So, if you want my earlier warning removed, I suggest we hunt that thing, either that or have your girlfriend cook this meat.” He was getting sicker and sicker of this place, even more so of these people. He didn’t particularly like people, unless they were screaming in fear or dying. He thought a moment, about nothing in particular, at least nothing relating to their current situation, and then dropping the eight hairy legs on the ground before stretching and popping his left shoulder. He thought of entertainment, next. The girl had seemed to fear him, rightfully so, however he would manipulate that fear into his own joy. He looked at the girl, waiting for her to look at him and then shooting a stare akin to that he often showed right before something (more commonly someone) was about to be killed in an extremely painful and horrible way. He wasn’t going to follow through with this look of pure bloodlust, but he was going to enjoy shooting her horrific glances, filled with such joy and passion for the lost lives, lives he had stolen and thrown to the wind. He cut off the stare; he was on the verge of killing them, particularly the wizard. He redirected his thoughts to the egg they could acquire. It could be interesting, fun even. If he were to gain a drake’s egg, he could teach it to kill, and carry him on long journeys, or even become a mount while he used the cloth of his sword to kill people from the air.
