Yaksha stood on the border of Calmonah Forest, taking several deep breaths and looking at the area ahead with, for the first time in a while, fear and a hint of curiosity. He hadn't yet stepped into the forest, and he could feel something horrible pervading through his form. His already tenuous grasp on sanity began to slip and slide, as if whatever oozed from this portion of Norwood encouraged madness, as if the woods themselves were evil. Needless to say, the lich was in no hurry to enter the woods, and put his sanity at risk. But, for the sake of a friend, this was his only option. The lich sighed, holding out a hand to his newest undead creation, who shuffled forward and licked it with a long, rotting tongue that left trails of slime over it. The lich let out a deep sigh, as he stared at the clouds, then whispered softly. "Rhigose. I gave you my word." The day had started the same as any other; Yaksha in his study, pouring over arcane scrolls he had found throughout the ruins where his guild was situated. The shadow society was growing steadily, and it wouldn't be long before their plans could finally begin to seed throughout Imythess. For the first time in ages, Yaksha let a flicker of hope fill him, a small window of certainty that everything would be okay. But, as with all good things in the world, it could not last. The pounding on his door was almost enough to worry Yaksha, had he not been so sure that any emergancy would've simply had the guest walk in uninvited. The lich was wrong, and as he opened the door, he realized this. The door opened on Rhigose, his loyal friend and closest confidant; one of the few people who knew where his phylactery had been hidden. But, instead of a laughter of welcome or any of the sort, Yaksha gave only a strangled gasp as he saw the wounds on the dragon. In his human form, it seemed a wonder he could even stand, as the latticework of scars on his chest alone were enough to make a man nauseous. The entire left side of his face was devoid of flesh, and it was a safe bet his eye was gone, too. He gave a grim smile, blue blood trickling from his lips as he coughed, before proclaiming, "Yaksha. I screwed up. I need to tell you...need to warn you." The dragon lurched through the doorway, his blood freezing into small icy pools as he made his way to the living room, looking almost like he had truly died, and returned only as some spectre. Yaksha dismissed this idea quickly; he would've known if this was so, and he followed the dragon slowly, speaking laconically as he shifted into a voice of pure concern and friendship. "What happened, Rhigose? What could possibly hurt you this badly?" The dragon looked up with his one good eye, and gave a wan smile as he pointed a trembling finger out the window. "Drakes, Yaksha. They've become aggressive lately, more than they have in a long time. I came to warn you, to let you know that these things aren't the same as me. They're...they're closer to animals than true dragons, Yaksha. They attack anything they feel they can kill, and they don't hesitate to play dirty. I got ambused by a few...devious, I think. I don't know how, but my ice seemed not even to hurt them." He let out a hoarse gasp of pain, falling back on the couch before he gave a rattling cough. "I killed one myself. Looked like a kid, but I couldn't be sure. It was going to be a big one, that's all I know. But I overestimated myself, let them catch me off-guard. Calmonah, Yaksha. Go to Calmonah, find the drakes. I need an egg so I can get a good look at it; maybe that can tell me what set them off so suddenly." Finally, his hand lashed out, grabbing Yaksha's shirt and pulling him close. "And for the Gods' sake, Yaksha, don't make me embarass myself. You know I have my pride, but I'm willing to drop it for today. So don't you dare fail, and let these drakes make things worse." Yaksha was stunned for a minute, his throat filled with enough raw emotion to leave him speechless, before he finally managed to rasp, "I promise, friend. I won't give up, not after all you've given me." |

(1) Nocturne crouched low in the bushes of Calmonah forest. The decay that ran rampant in the place was almost palpable, if not by the outward appearance then by the tingles that moved up and down the spine. Nocturne rested one hand on the bark of a tree while she unfolded a piece of paper from her pocket. The markings were hard to make out and had only really been sketched in a few minutes. A traveler at a nearby inn, one of those tiny ones travelers found along the roads, had claimed that he could give her some information about Calmonah. The map was what she ended up with. Nocturne wasn’t very far into the forest yet and she was just to the left of the path. She quickly found the general idea of where she was on the map and ran her finger over the ink. Near the center of the forest was a large tower structure drawn on the map but … Nocturne moved her finger a little beyond that picture and to the left. Right there. Nocturne tapped the picture of a large nest, within nestled two eggs. That was the devious drake she was after. Nocturne folded up the map again after checked the sky and a compass, and then tucked it back into the pocket of her trousers. She reached over her shoulder and fingered the hilt of her air sword, Requiem, to make sure it was still there. Nocturne rose from the brush and cast a glance around before she rose and moved slowly and quietly through the forest. She had seen some odd sights in this forest, wolves that weren’t quite right wandering along the paths. She wanted to avoid conflict as much as possible seeing how she might have to fend off an angry momma drake in a few hours. |

The lich took his first step into the forest, nearly reeling from the maddening presence in the forest. Whatever called these woods home, it was undeniably powerful, and it would take all of Yaksha's power not to lose what tenuous sanity he maintained. Just as the lich prepared to turn back, ready to surrender, his undead stepped forward, holding out a large hand, and steadying him. Its arm was as long as a tree trunk, and it was a mottled, purplish-red that seemed to pulse almost like its entire body was made of muscle. It leaned forward horrendously, making it seem much smaller than it actually was. Yaksha looked back at it happily, smiling softly and nodding to it. The undead stared blankly, before returning his nod, and pulling to its full height. The beast stood nearly 10 feet tall, looking every bit as formidable as any dragon. Its spinal cord pushed against the odd material it was made of, leaving several large ridges across its back. Because of this, even now its head was inclined downward, making it seem subserviant. Yaksha waved a hand silently, then whispered softly. "Let me see your face, my child." The beast hesitated, before looking up, and straight ahead; the mere sight of what existed there would've broken the wills of lesser men. The beast's head looked entirely human, quite possibly being the only place with flesh on it. However, its teeth had been filed down to sharp points, and twin curled horns issued from its forehead, making it look like some demonic goat. However, even that was less unsettling than the other odd aspect of this creature. On its throat, mere feet below the head itself, sat a small ring of 6 more heads, all opened in screams of agony and rage. Their teeth were also filed to points, but their heads were different. One head had two long, pointed horns that looked sharp enough to peirce a tree. Another had a crown of metal spikes running across the crown of its head, and yet another had a sinister-looking metallic horn between its eyes, just above the head. Below the heads, white fur ran down its chest, giving it a look closer to some gorilla than a human being. The lich smirked calmly, and waved it forward, as he began to drift across the ground. His beast followed after him, lumbering clumsily by pressing its large fists against the ground, then pushing off, and making it look even more like a gorilla. Yaksha chuckled softly, and shifted into his own necromantic sight, spotting a source of positive energy nearby. He waved his minion towards it, and the creature quickly yet clumsily began to plow down the trees in the way. Once it reached the other end, it stood obediantly, waiting for the lich. He followed after it seconds later, only to see a familiar face staring at him. He bowed slightly, then spread his arms. "Hello, Nocturne. Why are you in this forest tonight?" |

(2) Nocturne ducked under a low hanging branch and continued walking, her boots snapping twigs and crunching leaves. She checked the hue of the darkening sky and continued on her way. She heard someone coming and ducked into the bushes as a skeleton sauntered by. She watched him retreat into the darkness before she rose and started on her way again. This whole duck and cover endeavor was probably going to waste a lot more time than if she just killed anything that came onto the path. But it saved energy this way. Nocturne dodged out onto the path and started walking again, keeping a mental image of the map in her mind as she did so. The forest was filled with the eerie sound of inhuman bird calls and growls and suddenly her stomach joined the choir. Nocturne reached into a saddlebag she had tied around her waist and dug out some dried bread. She stuffed it into her mouth and chewed unceremoniously, unable to close her mouth all the way. Another sound came from the path behind her and Nocturne moved back into the brush, chewing slowly. She swallowed a large portion and closed her mouth, watching the road with interest. The man that came into view was one she had met before and so she stepped out of the brush and back onto the road. Nocturne moved her hands over the material of her clothes to wipe off any dirt before smiling at Yaksha. “Evening Yaksha.” Nocturne tilted her head in greeting before looking back down the way she was heading. “You could say I’m on a bit of a hunting expedition. Care to tag along?” |

Yaksha chuckled softly, then brought a hand to his chin. Nocturne claimed to be on a hunting mission, and he himself hoped to find one of those devious drakes soon enough to save his friend. The forest was large, and the presence of someone else might save his sanity. He finally gave a curt nod, and waved his undead forward. It lumbered towards him, nuzzling his shoulder before looking at Nocturne curiously. Its lips peeled back to reveal a row of teeth that looked sharp enough to rend her flesh, until Yaksha's hand snaked out, landing on its arm and pushing gently. "She's a friend. There's no threat here for now." As soon as those words left his mouth, a cackle filled the air, and a wizened man lurched from the trees, grinning madly. He was leaning on a gnarled cane, and the glint of madness in his eyes was almost enticing to the lich. It whispered that everything would be easier if he stopped fighting himself, let his power truly run free. He could destroy his enemies so very easily, if he'd simply accept the madness! The lich's eyes were caught by the druid's, but he finally managed to pull his glance away. The man's voice was soft and tired, as he spoke. "Oh, I'd say there's more threats than you expect, intruders! Our master has given us free roam of this land, and in return we protect him from unwanted guests! You are certainly unwanted..." The man snapped a finger, and three treants slithered forth from the trees, looking a sickly grey as they approached the lich and Nocturne. Yaksha cocked his head, waving a hand slowly as his undead lowered its shoulder. It charged forward, smashing one treant to bits, before 2 more lept onto it, clawing and scratching at its vulnerable flesh; the material may have given it impressive strength, but even the slightest of twigs could wound the beast. As Yaksha's pet grew distracted by these 2 tainted trees, the mad druid rose his staff, murmuring arcane words as vines began to sprout quickly from the ground, rushing for Yaksha and Nocturne. "Surrender, and you can be taken to the master in one peice!" |

(3) Nocturne had a haughty reply all prepared for if he agreed to come or if he didn’t want to. But she never really got the chance to use it before an odd little man jumped out of the woods. She raised an eyebrow at the odd little druid, he had an ugly little grin that held a smugness to it that Nocturne found extremely annoying. She wanted to wipe it off his gnarled old face. Her golden eyes watched him snap his fingers and in an instant Nocturne had Requiem in her hand, a shield in the other. She hefted the shield higher and held the sword out in front of her. The treants came out and towards them before Yaksha commanded his undead into the first one. Nocturne stepped forward and swung her blade. The sword made contact with the woody creature and send a shower of splinters flying around her. The sword had taken a decent chuck out of the first treant and it disengaged the undead to attack her. Nocturne stepped back and the swung her sword, stepping into the movement as it made contact with the treant again. The shower of splinters came down again but this time one of the treants arms when with it. |

The druid scowled, his bald skull wreathed with plants. They would not be obediant; so few were, now. He could tell this would not end soon, and most likely not without sacrifices. The pain ripped through him as the first treant was smashed to splinters, and he was driven to a knee by it. His spells were powerful, but this fight was by no means fair. He pushed himself up, bracing himself with his cane. As the female sliced the arm off one of his treants, he snarled, and snapped his wrist at her, cackling as he did. A bolt of lightning flew towards her, and he spoke happily as he leaned on the cane. "Nature is more than simply trees and plants, little ones! I command many elements, with our master's guidance!" He turned, watching the male battle with his vines; a pair of blue flashes ran through the air as he sliced them effortlessly. His final treant was busy striking the undead beast, and it seemed to be losing. The druid felt a flash of fear, before steeling himself. The master had taught him much, and this battle was hardly over. He could feel magic running through him as he lowered a hand to the earth, murmuring soft words as vines and roots began to drag to the surface. Within seconds, a blade of vines and roots lay in his hand, and he seemed ready for a true fight now. His cracked voice carried through the leaves and branches, seeming to grow louder. "I live and die for the master!" |

(4) Nocturne turned just in time to see the bolt of lightning headed her way. She did the only thing she could think of. With a motion like a shrug she brought up her buckler. The lightning struck the shield and drove Nocturne back, throwing her against the ground. She immediately jumped up and cast a glance at the druid. Seeing that he wasn’t going to make another move against her just yet she made her way over to the undead and adjusted her grip on the hilt of Requiem. Nocturne swung in a powerful horizontal motion that bit into the bark around the treant. It sliced the weird tree-creature in half. “Timber.” Nocturne called playfully as the top half of the treant struck the ground. "I live and die for the master!" Nocturne turned to face the druid now. She shrugged the buckler up higher on her arm and rested Requiem against her hip. With a fluid motion Nocturned threw her hair up into a bun so that none of it would get in the way. She picked up her sword and held it in front of her. The Druid seemed to be good at wasting time. “Shut up you winkled old man and get on with it. We’re a little busy here.” |

The treant swiped at Nocturne, its branches coming within inches of her cheek as it gave a final effort to slay the intruder. Even as the druid's blade of vines and roots was forming, he winced at the shared pain, then turned on Nocturne. Sweat dripped from his brow, travelling along his wrinkles and soaking the crude cloth used to cover his chest. His lips were pulled back into a primal sneer, and he seemed to be appraising Nocturne as he spoke. "You are quite an insolent child. No matter, the master will surely tame you in time." He gave a long, wheezing laugh, as his blade stayed trained on her chin. "When the master has finished with you, you will beg him to punish you for all the trouble you've brought him." The cruel glitter in his eyes, and the lift of his brow already gave hints to what such a punishment might be. Before Nocturne could react, the druid had lunged forward, his blade swiping across her sheild and sending sparks into the air. His ragged intake of air hinted that he was much more drained than he looked, but he still managed to hold a hand out to one of the nearby trees, murmuring arcane words that caused it to rise slowly, the branches creaking as it turned to look at Yaksha. The wide grin on the druid's face was almost sadistic as he leaned forward, hissing at her. "Surrender now, girl. I shall ask the master to show you mercy; it'll hardly hurt at all. Perhaps then you will see logic." As Nocturne and the druid clashed, the tree was already approaching Yaksha, who waved a hand lazily, and murmured several arcane words. His undead turned quickly, almost doing a complete 360, but managing to stop itself in time. Its small, dim eyes caught the tree approaching its master, and it barelled forward, tackling the beast when it was within range, and letting out a roar of anger as branches began to slice at its flesh, causing black fluid to weep forth. Yaksha was already leaping forward, his twin blue-steel blades flashing as they sliced at the tree trunk, sap oozing forth and making it harder to pull his blade away with each strike. The druid looked back at him, cackling madly as he spoke. "You see, even your friend cannot hold up against me! Surrender now, and your life will be filled with pleasures and wonders you could hardly contemplate." |

(5) She quickly lifted up her shield to block his attack, her snarky reply dying on her tongue. As the druid’s sword glanced off her shied Nocturne pushed back with a good deal of force, sending the druid back a few paces. All this guy seemed to do was chant and talk, chant and talk. Nocturne couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “You’re a windbag you know that.” And with that he lunged at her. Nocturne brought up her blade, the druid’s clashing against hers. They were locked that way for a moment; Nocturne and the druid staring at each other. Despite his age the druid seemed agile and stronger than he should have been, probably something to do with the magic of this place. Nocturne pushed off and they both stood back from each other for a moment, sizing the other up. "You see, even your friend cannot hold up against me! Surrender now, and your life will be filled with pleasures and wonders you could hardly contemplate." Nocturne cast a glance over to see how Yaksha was fairing. She turned her golden eyes back to the druid and for a moment her form blurred and a bloodied woman with a long scar stood in front of him, and then the moment passed and Nocturne was Nocturne again. She levelled Requiem at the druid and her voice came out melodic. ”How about you shut your trap and fight already. I don’t give a damn what you think you can do to me because until you actually beat me it’s all empty threats. Or the dying wishes of a wrinkled old druid.” Nocturne moved like a blur and slashes at his arm, cutting a deep gash into his skin. The druid howled in pain and retaliated. Nocturne swung at him again but misjudged his speed the second time. He landed a solid stab that cut her waist, although not deep it was an inconvenience. With the flat of her sword she knocked him back a few steps and swung again, a horizontal slash aimed at his mid-section. |

Yaksha and his undead were steadily slashing away at the tree, the lich stripping the bark as the undead minion was snapping any branches that grew too close to its hands. The animated tree seemed to be losing now, and Yaksha chanted several soft eldritch words, causing a tongue of flame to shoot forth and strike the tree's naked flesh, the bark stripped away by his blades. The sap began to sizzle, the heat leaving it close to burning. Yaksha gave a small grin, murmuring arcane words as he swung his wrist once more, setting the sap aflame gently, where it began to travel, touching the wood and beginning to heat it up slowly. Yaksha stepped back, waving his undead away, even giving a small chuckle as blood began to dribble from his minion's arms and chest. A hand moved out slowly, and dark energy began to travel across the minion's body, slowly sealing the wounds shut as Yaksha let out a sigh. "I've done my part, Nocturne. The tree is gone, and the druid is weak. Finish him off. I need...a minute to rest..." He sat down slowly, taking several deep breaths as he tried to reconcile the energies he had just spent. Repairing his minion alone had been a difficult task, but it had served him well enough to earn it. Now, the lich rested as he put the final battle in Nocturne's hands. A thin smile came across his face, as he spoke, without opening his eyes. "If you can defeat him in under a minute, I'll give you 5 gold pieces." The druid clutched his chest, feeling the heat run through his own body as the tree began to burn. He glared at Nocturne, then swiped at her head with the blade, his voice a thin hiss. "Then no more words! I will kill you without saying anything!" He wielded the plant blade with surprising efficiency, stabbing and slashing at Nocturne expertly as he cackled. "Die, die! You are not even fit to serve the master!" |

(6) "If you can defeat him in under a minute, I'll give you 5 gold pieces." “You’re on!” Nocturne called over to Yaksha a smirk on her face. She barely had time to finish the words before the Druid was on her again. Nocturne parried and dodged his blows for a minute before she knocked him back again and took a moment to focus all her energies onto the skills she had as a master of blades and raging berserker. Nocturne breathed in a deep breath, filling her lungs with the cool air around her. When Nocturne opened her eyes there was a storm brewing in them, waiting to be released. Nocturne parried another attack and landed a Harsh blow, knocking the druid back and stunning him. The druid groaned at the pain and Nocturne stepped up and placed Requiem under the druid’s chin just as he had done to her. “I am not fit to serve anyone. I am owned by no one but myself.” She pressed the blade a little harder into the druid skin, causing a dot of blood to appear around the sword’s tip. “You! You are the one who is about to fail not only the ‘master’ but yourself. How’s it feel to be a dotting old fool facing his end?” Nocturne pressed even harder, the blood ran down his neck and stained his clothes. “Well?” “P-P-“ Before he could even finish the sentence Nocturne slammed her sword through his skin and neck until it hit his spine. Even then her blade kept going, severing his head from his body completely. Nocturne violently pulled out the blade and watched as the druid’s head rolled to the side and thudded to the ground before his knees gave out and he collapsed to the ground. Nocturne pulled a rag out of her pants and whipped off the blade as she walked over to Yaksha. “Well... what was my time?” |

Yaksha never even looked up, speaking absentmindedly as he reached into his clothes. "42 seconds, quite impressive. I would've liked him alive though, would've made it much easier to find what we needed. Alas, things cannot always be as we wish them." He quickly counted out 5 coins, throwing them at Nocturne's feet before pushing himself off of the ground and taking another deep breath. "Give me a moment, and I'll put us on the right path." His eyelids finally fluttered upward slowly, and he shifted into his wraith sight effortlessly, his lunar vision making it even easier to pick out what he wanted to find. The drake he was looking for would've been significantly larger than a horse, but it was still hard to pinpoint a living creature through the veil of trees. He rose a hand slowly, then held up a finger. "It's too dense for me to tell just yet. I suggest we go along the path our druid had blocked us from; no doubt there was something to be hidden that way. If we fail, I can help us to retrace our steps and we can take some other path. But for now, I suggest we try to stay along the weathered path; gods know what could be hiding among the foliage that we're unprepared for." He gave a soft chuckle, before brushing off his clothes and walking ahead slowly. "We may want to let Behemoth go in front of us, so that we can make a path if need be." |

(7) Nocturne nudged the body with a foot. “As if we need information. Well I don’t at any rate. And beside killing him is much more fun than keeping him alive and dragging around a snivelling waste of air.” Nocturne rolled her eyes that Yaksha had tossed the coins on the ground in front of her. Nocturne swung her shield back into its place on her back and flipped the coins up into the air with the tip of her sword, catching each one in her hand. Nocturne walked over to Yaksha and wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned in towards him. “Silly man. Don’t underestimate women.” Nocturne backed off and dug into her pocket; she pulled out a piece of paper and waved it under Yaksha’s nose. “I have a map.” She pointed to a spot on the path and ran her finger along it to a drawing of a nest. She handed it over to him to examine anyway. Nocturne looked down the path the way the map said for them to go. “Behemoth walking in front sounds like a good plan to me. Who knows what else is in this damn forest. Good thing I came prepared.” Nocturne patted the bag at her side filled with goodies. “Ready whenever you are.” She crossed her arms across her chest and waited for Yaksha to hand the map back and start back to find the drake. |

Yaksha grabbed the map carefully, examining it closely for several moments. At first, the lich had trouble finding themselves on the map; the eggs were clearly marked, and easy to find, if they could simply pinpoint their own positions. The lich glanced up several times, trying to note any landmarks or similar objects to compare themselves to. Finally, he simply jumped high into the air, landing on a platform only he could access, and walked up an incorporeal flight of stairs. He finally managed to spot the entrance, and from there it was easy to see where they needed to go. He landed quickly and gracefully, handing Nocturne the map before waving his undead forward. Behemoth knuckled his way forward quickly, giving soft snorts as he crushed anything that stood in front of them. Saplings were smashed to splinters under his weight, many animals that they may have had to attack fled from this monster, and the path was quite simple to follow for Yaksha and Nocturne. The lich even began to hum a soft tune as they traveled behind his undead, beginning to feel perversely content, despite the plight of his friend; simply focusing on his song, and even being so close to Nocturne, kept him anchored, and fought the madness that caressed his mind every moment he stayed within the woods. |
